What is your ultimate stain remover?

DC has managed to get stains on some white school shirts and I just can't get rid of them (the stains, not the child!) I've tried a Vanish-type spray twice but it hasn't worked. Over the summer sunshine was the best stain remover but it's in short supply at this time of year.

Any tips on products that really work?

It really depends what the stains are?

But for anything heavily stained I use swarfega. Its not actually designed for clothes though so try it on an inconspicuous patch first.

I wish I knew! Mainly pen and paint, I think. I saw Dr Beckmann does a stain remover specifically for this but not sure if that's just marketing hype.

Fairy liquid is my go to

MonkeyPuddle · 24/10/2021 10:11

I use Elbow Grease spray in everything.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 24/10/2021 10:14

If all else fails I put the article in the Clothes Bank and then the stain has magically gone (from our house).

Are you using branded Vanish? DH went to the supermarket with a list with Vanish on it, and he brought back Tesco own brand wquivelalebt which is useless. I find Vanish can do wonders. I use the one for whites (I think it is called vanish crystal) and the Norma one in the pink tub.

Apply as a paste first and then put in the wash with a scoop of it too.

If it's board marker nothing I found helped sorry. That and suncream are my two dreaded stains up light does work with most. On the off chance you have one of those gel nail lamps I wonder if that would work? If not I have found the vanish soap quite good try and push it through the fabric not just rub on top iyswim. Often see it in pound shop or b and m type places.

WellTidy · 24/10/2021 10:21

Some red or bright pink paints are a pain to get off though.

Cornishbelle · 24/10/2021 10:21

*UV light

WellTidy · 24/10/2021 10:22

If it’s board marker, I’ve heard that a board eraser pen will get it off.

Greentomatoes21 · 24/10/2021 10:23

I've recently discovered Napisan. (Usually used to soak towelling nappies in good old days). Only works on white cotton but takes every stain out! Soak in a basin with some added, then wash as normal.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 29/10/2021 20:50

Ace bleach (in the blue bottle) is fantastic.

clarrylove · 29/10/2021 20:56

Anti bac hand gel is good for getting pen marks off school shirts.

NannyR · 29/10/2021 21:00

I like to use green household soap, very cheap, lasts forever and great at getting greasy or food stains out. Not sure how good it is on one but might be worth a try.

ChillyB · 29/10/2021 21:01

Violets mineral bleach - it’s magic!

Babymamaroon · 29/10/2021 21:02

For pen ink - the Stain Devils one is brilliant.

Gladioli23 · 29/10/2021 21:03

Another vote for napisan.

Same ingredients as vanish (oxygen based bleaching agent) but much cheaper.

Spunout · 29/10/2021 21:04

I find the vanish soap much better than any of the powders.

MorningTeas · 29/10/2021 21:06

Ace

FindingMeno · 29/10/2021 21:09

I use napisan. Any particular stains I also spray first with any old stain remover.
Grease stains I rub in a bit of washing up liquid.
Tomato based stains I hang in the sun

Nordicmom · 29/10/2021 21:38

The Clorox bleach pen works well on white clothes . I’ve stocked up on Amazon but not sure if it’s there atm . When I found it it it was literally a revelation , so easy to apply and just works on anything that you can use bleach on so cotton at least . I think there’s some on eBay .

RockinHorseShit · 30/10/2021 23:33

DD was a burger for this. This worked for us.

If it's marker pen or biro, soak the stain in cheap hairspray & then rinse out. Dab what's left with the correct Stain Devils & wash as normal. We use Ace or those laundry sachets for whites for white shirts etc

CelebratingMyOwnSelf · 30/10/2021 23:55

Astonish carpet and upholstery cleaner.
And for the poster above with suncream issues use a denture tablet.
I also use ace bleach

EastWestWhosBest · 30/10/2021 23:59

Another vote for Napisan.
Also Splosh stain remover. It works wonders. I’ve found it good for food/oil based stains. No idea about board marker.
Or a soak in soda crystals often helps.

EastWestWhosBest · 31/10/2021 00:04

Here is the link to the Splosh stain remover.

This is my referral code for Splosh. DHAF42L2UI
I get £3 so use it if you want, I recommend the product anyway.
