Slugs in the house

110APiccadilly · 02/09/2021 09:56

I come down in the morning to glistening trails on the floor. It's an old house so plenty of places a determined slug could squeeze in. Strangely, I've never actually seen a slug, only the trails. Any suggestions for keeping them away?

We have a crawling 9 month old so any solutions need to be safe for her. I know slug pellets aren't viewed as a good option nowadays anyway, but we certainly won't be putting them down, for example.

Oh gosh this happened to us in our last house...also an old house.

Horrifyingly we worked out that ours were living under the fridge! They tend to come in under gaps in back doors...have you a gap there?

We put salt in a thick line across the gap to stop them entering and then close to the fridge to kill the ones that were there.

We moved shortly afterwards and disposed of that fridge!

A good line of salt on the path across any external doors, including patio doors.
I get them occasionally and they seem to come through the patio doors somehow.

Are you me, as I was thinking of starting this thread too. Our living room floor looks like the slug version of strictly is taking place each evening Shock.

I think ours are coming in through the air brick so not a lot I can do to stop them and I was wondering whether salt would just result in exploded slug everywhere instead Envy (not envy)

trippingflip · 02/09/2021 10:25

Mine come up a drain which is rarely used and then through an overflow drain. Most likely the fluid in the sbend had dried up permitting this. We just have to remember to use that sink once in a while...

Keroppi · 02/09/2021 10:27

OMG. I used to live in a very old house with parquet flooring, where the wooden blocks could lift up and move in places.

Once I came downstairs for a glass of water in the night and stepped on one!!!!!!! Utterly grossed out I hopped over, turned on the light only to see some baby ones slugging out from under the floorboard!!!! I wanted to set the house on fire and leave.

We put salt all around the edges of the rooms and even some down the floorboards themselves. Didn't see them again but did still occassionally see evidence of slugs. Urgh!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/09/2021 10:31

We had this, horrible slug trails. Including up the walls🤮

Dh put a saucer of beer out and that sorted it. There was only one slug in the beer, but it was the only bastard who’d been causing all the trails.

No slug returned after the beer trap!

SweatyBetty20 · 02/09/2021 10:47

I have this in my old house - I’ve worked out that they are coming in from air vents in the hallway and have replaced the vents there - I stuffed the cavity with copper mesh, then put a new plaster cover on top with a rodent mesh screen in between.

They are also coming in the kitchen from behind the units - I have no idea how. That’s one I still need to tackle, so until then I leave the lights on at night in the kitchen which does deter them to some extent.

Bluebellbike · 02/09/2021 10:54

They get in under skirting boards and can squeeze under uPVC doors. In my last house we put clear silicone sealer where the skirting boards met the floor and a line of salt across doorways on the inside before going to bed. Stopped putting the salt down after a few weeks and the slimy sods didnt reappear.

Amdone123 · 02/09/2021 11:05

@2tired2bewitty, that made me laugh - the slug strictly dancing. Now when I get up in the middle of the night, I will laugh and not recoil. Yuck - I hate slugs. I can cope with spiders , don't love em, but slugs are horrid.
I put a layer of salt at the back door and some behind the bin in the kitchen. It does work but I don't like doing it because of the dog. He won't lick the salt but I just worry he will somehow get to it.

110APiccadilly · 02/09/2021 19:24

Thanks all. I'll salt the earth house tonight and let you know how I get on!

I saw a slug emerging from the overflow slot in our bathroom sink once Shock. I think the heavy rain must have pushed it up a pipe. I had to use the end of a toothbrush to push it back down. I was disturbed for days going back into the bathroom.

TheHouseILiveIn · 02/09/2021 19:32

Omg, this thread is hair-raising Shock
Some hilarious comments on here too Grin

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/09/2021 19:35

Violetparis, l would never have gone back in that bathroom. I feel sick just thinking about it🤮🤢

110APiccadilly · 03/09/2021 09:54

We put the salt down but clearly not comprehensively enough - the evidence this morning suggested a slug party in the kitchen rather than the living room. Will be salting the kitchen as well tonight!

Try beer traps too. They love the yeasty smell so it attracts them to it.

110APiccadilly · 03/09/2021 13:56

The reason I'm holding off on the beer traps is that we don't drink and it seems a waste to buy beer just for that. Even though I just bought 2 massive cartons of salt primarily for deterring them.

We get slugs in our (Edwardian terrace) house too. Gross. Haven’t actually seen the creatures for a while but they leave trails on the dining room rug, aargh. House is slightly damp and full of cracks, like most of its vintage, so I don’t think there’s much we can do to stop them getting in!

Stroller15 · 03/09/2021 14:02

They manage to squeeze under the uPVC door in the kitchen. I poured salt over and under the door frame and now get beef-jerky like slug-remains everywhere. I hope the slug massacre will end soon.

idontlikealdi · 03/09/2021 14:34

Oh god this reminds me of my old house, they were able to get in under the upscale doors. I salted everything and then had to do the dead slug pick up for weeks before the dog ate them.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/09/2021 17:57

We had them when we had a leak on the water supply pipe running under the house. Slugs love the damp. As soon as we repaired the leak there were no further slugs.

kinzarose · 03/09/2021 18:03

In our last (very old) house we gave up trying to get rid of them and the dc used to keep them as pets in a tank. Becky and Twinkle lived to a right age!

We had them coming through into the kitchen through an air brick. To stop them we put some metal gauze over it.

Now I have them coming in the living room. It must be under the skirting boards. They can go as thin as paper so can get anywhere. Not sure how to stop them this time. Also need to work out where the rat, which was seen in the kitchen, and has subsequently eaten poison has got to..... 🤔 vile creature makes me want to puke.

Mintjulia · 03/09/2021 18:12

I've had two slug trails in the sitting room this summer, hated them, so I checked the foundations outside and found a gap where they (& damp) could get it. I scraped out the old soft mortar and repointed. Slug1 has disappeared.

Solving Slug2 is the target for this weekend Smile

daisychicken · 03/09/2021 18:27

We found they like cold coffee Envy (

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 03/09/2021 19:40
