Is Aldi actually that much better than Lidl?

My SIL and BIL rave about Aldi. They've shopped exclusively there for about a year now and say it's much better than Lidl.

They've saved £££££ in the process and I'm about to switch myself, but frustratingly the three Lidl's in my city are all really easy to get to and the three Aldi's are all a nightmare drive with congestion etc.

I just wondered what others thought - is Aldi much better and worth the extra hassle to get to for me?

I think they’re very similar in price, quality and layout of the shop.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 22/08/2021 09:20

no i think its a personal preference
very similar pricing imo

Topseyt · 22/08/2021 09:25

Personal choice. They are quite similar.

Aldi is much closer to us than Lidl. However, I do like Lidl when I am out that way. It even has a bakery in the store, which Aldi doesn't.

Other than that, they are both very similar types of store.

dementedpixie · 22/08/2021 09:25

Think they are much of a muchness tbh. I dont do a full shop at either of them. I get bits and pieces from each but probably get more from aldi than lidl

Roselilly36 · 22/08/2021 09:28

Like any supermarket some items I like from Aldi, sometimes are better at Lidl. We do our main big shop at Lidl, as this store is nicer, modern, large very wide aisles, than the local Aldi is small, narrow aisles and the Lidl plus app is working well for us to.

MrsPumpkinSeed · 22/08/2021 09:28

I have both at equal distance from us and I do like aldi but I prefer lidl.
If I had conjestion or traffic to factor in then it would be a no brainer for me.

2reefsin30knots · 22/08/2021 09:30

I prefer Lidl mainly because our Lidl has a bakery (which is the main point of Lidl) whereas Aldi doesn't.

The stuff and the prices are much of a muchness. I really don't think you could save ££, never mind ££££ by switching from Lidl to Aldi.

ShuddaBeenMe · 22/08/2021 09:48

I prefer Aldi. Switched from Tesco a few years ago and save so much money compared to what we used to spend.

First year the difference paid for a swanky 5* holiday. I do a full shop there and don't need to go anywhere else

HasaDigaEebowai · 22/08/2021 09:52

There's no way they've saved £££££ switching from lidl to aldi. They're just trying to feel good by justifying their own decision.

ShingleBeach · 22/08/2021 10:04

I prefer Lidl for range of cheeses, their yogurt is much nicer, bakery, things in the ‘theme’ weeks, especially Greek.

Aldi frozen berries are better, though.

However, lots of things at both are horrible. Most of the ice cream in tubs is over sweet and sickly, any ready meal or prepared food (quiches, salad tubs) tasteless and / or gunky, etc. Salads in v small bags so no better value, fruit and veg is hit and miss.

crimsonlake · 22/08/2021 10:06

Agree they are similar and definitely no big savings to be made switching between either.
I tend to stick to Lidl as I find their local stores larger. I tend to choose the ones with the biggest carparks tbh as some can be a squeeze.

PearlyBird · 22/08/2021 10:09

Two cheeks of the same arse.
It's well known.

Ylvamoon · 22/08/2021 10:12

Our local Aldi is crap - (think moldy veg on shelves) so I tend to stick with Lidl.
But wouldn't buy any meat from either of them.

AlexanderArnold · 22/08/2021 10:13

I can do a full shop in Aldi but struggle in Lidl. Fruit and veg in both of ours are v good. I find I spend slightly more in Lidl but prob because there are more branded goods so more temptation to swap up. Our Aldi though is brand new, easy to get to, wide aisles etc whereas Lidl is older and more crowded, so I have stuck with Aldi. The Lidl bakery though is amazing so you've now made me think I need to go back there!

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 22/08/2021 10:15

I prefer lidl but only the big one, the small one near me is always half stocked.
Aldi has a shit bread selection and I mostly live on bread.

tabulahrasa · 22/08/2021 10:18

They’re pretty similar except Lidl has a bakery... in general for both I’ve found that older small stores are rubbish and bigger newer ones have better stock.

MilduraS · 22/08/2021 10:48

I think it depends on the store. My local Lidl is old and very run down inside. There's another on the other side of town which is newer and indistinguishable from my local Aldi. I don't think there's a big difference in the products or prices.

I do a shop in Aldi and then go to the Sainsbury's next door to top up with the bits they didn't have or don't do so well. Their veg varies so sometimes they don't have things like squash or aubergines. They have a small selection of herbs and spices so Sainsbury's is better if I want to make a curry paste or buy something like harissa. We've still saved an absolute fortune from buying the bulk of our shopping at Aldi.

pinkflask · 22/08/2021 10:50

I do find that Lidls are more spacious and have better car parks - the newer ones at least. I’ve been in brand-new Aldis with very weird parking layouts. Product-wise I think they’re much of a muchness in many ways although Lidl seems to have got better where Aldi has stayed the same.

CoffeeRunner · 22/08/2021 10:59

If I had the choice of Aldi & Lidl next door to each other I would choose Aldi. I marginally prefer their food & it does usually come out a bit cheaper.

That said Lidl is closer to me & easier to get to so I do use Lidl the most.

I needed a few things that neither Lidl nor Aldi sell the other week, so went to Tesco instead. I spent double on inferior quality food. Reminded me why I always go to Lidl or Aldi Grin.

Ticksallboxes · 22/08/2021 13:41

Thanks for all your replies! I think Lidl it is then as a big one has recently opened quite near us opposite a lovely park.

I meant my in-laws have saved £££££ switching from Waitrose to Aldi by the way, not from Lidl to Aldi!

They now currently have £20,000 to spend on home improvements (but he's a high earner)!

Grin you’ve cheered up my Sunday
Cissyandflora · 22/08/2021 13:56

Does Aldi have any offers to incentivise- Lidl have 10£ off if you spend 200 in a calendar month for example. Do Aldi have that sort of promo?
I’m not near either of them so I’m a waitrose and m&s shopper but I had the chance to go to a Lidl a few times this year and I was amazed by the prices and quality. I have to walk for a 4 mile round trip to go there though.

Reallybadidea · 22/08/2021 13:57

I've recently swapped from Lidl to Aldi but only because Aldi does click and collect which has improved my life no end!

BettySweaty · 22/08/2021 14:16

I much prefer Aldi, but I live near lidl. Our Lidl is always poorly stocked. Always have to go to a second supermarket afterwards to finish my shopping.

CoffeeRunner · 22/08/2021 14:19

No. The much cheaper prices are their "promo". Compared to the main supermarkets.
