Is Aldi actually that much better than Lidl?

My SIL and BIL rave about Aldi. They've shopped exclusively there for about a year now and say it's much better than Lidl.

They've saved £££££ in the process and I'm about to switch myself, but frustratingly the three Lidl's in my city are all really easy to get to and the three Aldi's are all a nightmare drive with congestion etc.

I just wondered what others thought - is Aldi much better and worth the extra hassle to get to for me?

i prefer Lidl. Aldi ice cream is not a patch on Lidl's.

Tesco price matches popular items to Aldi, not Lidl, so maybe they see Aldi as more of a threat.

However I think it varies store to store. Our local Aldi seems much better than our Lidl, tonnes more fresh fruit and veg and a much better match to the stuff we tend to buy. But it's also a newer store in a smarter location. I would 100% travel further to shop there. But I can easily believe things would be different elsewhere.

I prefer aldi and do the majority of my shopping there. I go to lidl for specific items eg Greek week although the prices didn't seem great at the last one. I find aldi middle aisle much better quality and our Lidl regularly has loads of prices missing which makes it a pain and I've ended up overpaying for things like Lego as assumed they would be a good deal. I suspect it depends on the store.

I think Lidl is much much better than Aldi. They have bakeries for a start.

Aldi veg is often totally disgusting. t's not just one or two stores, it's quite a few stores. I have been to stores in Essex, London, Linca, Notts, Yorkshire and Derbyshire and so many of them have terrible veg.

tintodeverano2 · 25/08/2021 09:19

Lidl has bakeries, so that makes it better.

I personally prefer Lidl. The food is nicer

chimichangaz · 26/08/2021 16:39

When I visited my sister in the north west recently I shopped at Lidl and was pleasantly surprised. The last time I'd been to a store it was horrible with poor quality food. I've just got back from shopping at my own local Lidl and I will definitely be doing my weekly shop there in future. There's an Aldi about the same distance in the opposite direction but IMO Lidl has a bigger range of food, plus, as everyone says, a bakery. Prices seem comparable.

I must must must stay away from Tesco!! Sooooo much more expensive!

I'm sure that the people who say they've saved hundreds are the ones who would pick up premium branded versions of everything, lots of processed/ready meals/side dishes and were always tempted by 'special' offers. They never seemed to be people who would happily put basics or essentials range items in a trolley.

When I lived somewhere with a couple of supermarkets within a short walk, I found that a shop at sainsburys was cheaper for almost everything except the special offer fruit and veg.

Actually I don't buy branded, I buy mostly the budget versions, but if I do a shop at aldi it's around £80, compared to £130. So it's £50 a week cheaper for me, which over a year is hundreds.

I do prefer Aldi, but can easily do a full shop in either now (I used to struggle to do one in Lidl). The only things I prefer in Lidl are the fresh bakery, the massive tub of creamy yogurt and the children's vitamins.

And I think Aldi have better "middle of the aisle" stuff too.

thelegohooverer · 04/09/2021 21:30

I think a lot depends on where you live.

I prefer Aldi because I don’t have to think - the price is always where you expect to find it. They don’t have apps, or confusing offers or different prices on different days.

My Lidl doesn’t have dates on the fruit and veg and it’s caught me out a couple of times. Or I’ve been tempted by a poster on the way in, only to find at the till that something isn’t that price until tomorrow.

NotMeNoNo · 04/09/2021 21:38

They are many more similarities than differences. Unless you have a particular item you want from one or the other I'd go with the more convenient one. I prefer Aldi as I know the range better but there's not much I haven't eventually found a Lidl equivalent of.

Redwinestillfine · 05/09/2021 22:51

Meh, I prefer Lidl. Better quality veg, bread and meat imo.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/09/2021 22:53

Do like Aldi. Lidl’s fruit and veg are always disappointing, go off very quickly after buying. Aldi’s are fresher.

ZednotZee · 05/09/2021 22:57

The best way I can explain the difference is this;

Lidl thinks its a continental supermarket, in this assumption it isn't far wrong.

Aldi thinks it is Waitrose for those who have never shopped at Waitrose, in this assumption it isn't far wrong.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/09/2021 23:07

Waitrose thinks it’s Booths for those who have never shopped at Booths Grin

ZednotZee · 05/09/2021 23:10

@MrsSkylerWhite

Isn't Booths just Waitrose for northerners? Wink

Nsky · 05/09/2021 23:13

I personally prefer Aldi, more choice, and not a big lidl near me

IngridTails · 05/09/2021 23:25

Booths are few and far between. The only ones I can think of are in Lytham, Knutsford and various ones in The Lakes. There's definitely not a B&M opposite, like most Waitrose I know of.

Comefromaway · 06/09/2021 22:28

I do have an Aldi and a Lidl 5 less than 5 mins away from each other.

I prefer Lidl.
