Does anyone use 'family cloth'/washable fabric loo roll?

me4real · 29/06/2021 00:36

People are going to think I'm obsessed lol as I had a loo roll thread a week or so ago. Grin

Has anyone tried this- if so, what can you recommend, if anything?

The people I know who use them only use them for wees. It's not my cup of tea but I cloth nappied for three years and can't really see the difference anyway.

user1493494961 · 29/06/2021 22:55

As a child, we used newspaper cut into squares, we knew how to recycle in those days.

RubyFowler · 29/06/2021 22:55

@TheDinosaurMum

No we do not have a reusable family shit rag . Sounds grim...
😆
Snoopsnoggysnog · 29/06/2021 22:58

“Not bothered about the environment”

“Muslim hose”

Hmm
SingingInTheShithouse · 29/06/2021 23:00

Love my Muslim Hose though, we were fine when loo roll shortages hit 😆
What's that!?

@SquirtleSquad, it's sort of like a hand held shower for washing yourself & jet washing the loo too. I think they are also known as "hand held bidet" too.

Discovered them in Egypt decades ago & DH has a hairy backside so he was very smitten as it's much cleaner & wanted one for home. They aren't expensive & fit to the back of your loo & do need plumbing in, though that's pretty easy. We have a cold water one, which is perfectly fine, but you can get hot & cold too

CharityPecksniff · 29/06/2021 23:01

What a thread... 🤣

LittleBearPad · 29/06/2021 23:03

Dear god. Maybe if you were massively environmentally conscious but not as a means of saving money!

me4real · 29/06/2021 23:06

@user1493494961 Didn't you get an inky bum?

For those that use water methods- can you do it without stripping off half your clothes? Don't you get water all other your clothes sometimes?

I agree that this reusable method probably isn't really practical for me as I couldn't do it using my 40C wash. :)

You'll get a rep as a toilet roll troll op.

@Cheesypea Grin I like the idea of being kind-of self-sufficient. I even tried to make soap out of ash once, but just ended up with a sink and baking tray etc etc full of charcoal. :)

And you can't really make soap cheaper than Asda etc otherwise.

Grim. Those that think a bucket with a lid will stop their lavatory smelling of stale urine, or worse, are delusional. A bit like smokers who use a mouthwash.

SingingInTheShithouse · 29/06/2021 23:09

“Muslim hose”

Hmm

Seriously @Snoopsnoggysnog

now there's PC gone absolutely mad 😂😂😂

that IS what they are called over here. I asked my Algerian friend & that's what she told me & it's correct, try Google before hoiking your draws up your crack & clutching your pearls Grin

Changechangychange · 29/06/2021 23:10

We used these when DS was in cloth nappies (for him only, the adults used toilet paper).

It didn’t smell, if you used a lidded nappy bucket and washed every 1-2 days. Hot wash to sterilise it.

The wet cloth was way better at getting poo off a baby’s bum - I would never go back to wet wipes for a baby, they just don’t work as well. One wipe would get everything off, which is really not the case with wet wipes.

So I can see the appeal. I just don’t think I would though. We briefly considered it last year in lockdown, but managed to get an ocado order booked so never had to do it.

user1471523870 · 29/06/2021 23:14

No but I use reusable wipes for my little one, so probably I should use them for myself too.
In reality I don't use much toilet paper as I like a proper wash (I use my bath as a sort of bidet, takes seconds).
To people saying it's gross, I don't think it's particularly disgusting. The Cheeky Wipe system is quite good, with two great quality boxes with clip lid and a net lining the dirty's one. No smell and you don't even touch them when they go in the wash.
Maybe with a toddler still in nappies my threshold for gross is higher!

and block the loo
me4real · 29/06/2021 23:16

I imagine a thing can be called a Muslim hose because that's what they actually do, it's not racist to say they do it. They do it as part of ritual purity as well as stuff in the Qur'an (there's an elaborate toiletting ritual that I can't imagine most Muslims do nowadays, involving walking into the loo backwards and chanting verses etc.)

The actual washing bit is arguably more wholesome.

I heard that in India etc people just use their hand and a bit of water. That'd seem wrong to most of us.

dear god they shit on the pavement in some country's dosent mean its a good idea

NakedAttraction · 29/06/2021 23:22

Same here @user1471523870. I’ve used the washable wipes for faces for years and started uses them for the baby’s bum during lockdown. I just lob them in the washer every few days and stick a Milton tablet in the box to make sure that gets a good clean too. People harp on about the environmental impact of lots of washing, but I’m more concerned about the landfill impact of wipes.

For some reason i think it’s grim for older kids/grown ups but not babies. Maybe because you get so up close to the poo anyway!

SingingInTheShithouse · 29/06/2021 23:24

That's right @me4real they are used in Muslim homes & that's what we were told they were called in Egypt, though I thought it odd in Egypt, so asked a Muslim friend here where to get one from & if they had another name here & they didn't back then. I think even B&Q & places stock them now though as they are pretty popular, we know few people with them, just because they are so useful & definitely very clean too. Personally I think they are brilliant

Kanaloa · 29/06/2021 23:25

Would it save you a lot of money really? Toilet paper isn’t that expensive. I think I would be looking to cut costs elsewhere.

PattyPan · 29/06/2021 23:31

I don’t but you will find lots of people who do if you join zero waste groups on Facebook

Thats a load of crap OP, were did u hear that. Walking backward and chanting in the toilet Hmm I too have started using a jug/portable bidet/butt hose, its very good. Then dry yourself with a bit of paper or a separate towel
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/06/2021 00:01

OffyouGo why don't you have a quick Google?

OP I considered this during lockdown as we couldn't get loo roll.

WrongWayApricot · 30/06/2021 00:01

If you're wanting to use them to save money what the hell else are you cutting back on first? Is this going to be a get 3 uses out of a teabag thread?

mustlovegin · 30/06/2021 00:03

Yuck!

PatchyTwat · 30/06/2021 00:16

My ex mother in laws house just has the hose/a sort of teapot full of water thing, there is a reason tradition dictates you don’t eat with your left hand…

Used to horrify the kids when they stayed and they needed “wiping”. But logical that approach (water and wipe with hand then wash hands thoroughly) is still I think less gross, more hygienic and definitely better for the environment and finances than family shit rags Envy

me4real · 30/06/2021 00:28

Thats a load of crap OP, were did u hear that. Walking backward and chanting in the toilet

@OffyouGo en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_toilet_etiquette The ritual doesn't always require entering the room backwards but facing away from the Qiblah, and entering with the left foot, leaving with the right.

I can't imagine many people do all this, though.

@PatchyTwat I agree, the hand wiping thing would be better than having to do exotic stuff with cloth if someone could get used to it. Grin

Is this going to be a get 3 uses out of a teabag thread?

@WrongWayApricot Don't give me ideas. Grin
