Coverless Duvets for bunk beds

Do you think it’s possible to make your own by stitching a cover onto a washable duvet? The ones you can buy are very expensive and there are very limited designs.

We have both the M & S and Night Owl ones. I bought them because Ds hates the feel of duvet covers (asd). They are great. I’ve had the M & S one 2 years now and the Night Owl one 1 year. They are alternated & washed every 4 weeks. Dd also has one at Uni (I can’t say how often she washes them.

Before I bought the Night Owl one I used to have the M & S one waged and dried in less than 3 hours.

Comefromaway · 29/05/2021 16:42

I couldn’t live with the 4.5 tog though. Way too cold. Ours are 10.5 tog

cocoloco987 · 29/05/2021 16:44

I'm sitting fully clothed including a hoodie now with a fluffy blanket over me, my heating is still on for several hours a day atm - a few in the evenings and a few in the early hours so it's warm when we get up/shower etc. I'm probably the other end of the extreme but I imagine most people would feel cold overnight with 4.5 tog most of the year

Cleverpolly3 · 29/05/2021 16:53

I don’t get it
Surely the hard part of making a hunk bed is the sheet that goes on the mattress
A cover less duvet is the same work as a duvet snd cover in real terms as both hair get chucked over and then tucked down the wall side a bit Confused

Cleverpolly3 · 29/05/2021 16:54

A bunk bed
Though a hunk bed sounds infinitely more appealing Grin

Cleverpolly3 · 29/05/2021 16:55

Also what happened if kids are sick / spill something/wet the bed? Which they occasionally / frequently do depending on circumstances

Comefromaway · 29/05/2021 16:56

If my child was sick or wet the bed I’d be washing the duvet anyway

Comefromaway · 29/05/2021 16:57

It takes me ages to change a duvet cover. Ds still hasn’t managed to learn how to do it.

Cover less duvet takes 30 seconds.

Sometimesfraught82 · 29/05/2021 16:58

Absolutely love the night owls one

And my son, usually not one to notice anything, actually said - can we take it on holiday with us as I love it!

Cleverpolly3 · 29/05/2021 17:00

Not if it was just water or the duvet wasn’t damaged too in the middle of the night you’d just sling another cover on

Is this a joke? Wash and fold them inside out grab the corners of the duvet and pull over. Hardly anytime at all.

Coverless duvets won’t withstand the same level of washing as duvet covers over time

4PawsGood · 29/05/2021 17:02

Children have lighter duvets than adults though don’t they? We have a 13.5 but the younger ones are only on about 4.5 still.

I’m still missing why you’d sew a cover to a duvet. What does that achieve? If you can explain maybe I’ll have a cunning plan for you Smile

chesirecat99 · 29/05/2021 17:02

Does anyone have a king size coverless duvet? What size washing machine do you have?

Sometimesfraught82 · 29/05/2021 17:04

@Cleverpolly3

Well if sick, same as if a duvet. Mine haven’t been sick for years touch wood, but if so - I’d bung in was wash and they’d have spare sheets and blankets.

They only ever are allowed water in their bedrooms. And if there’s a spill, it dries super fast

Knittingnanny · 29/05/2021 17:28

@Cleverpolly3, maybe when you are an old nanny like me with arthritic fingers, shoulder and knees you will “get it”!

DancesWithDaffodils · 29/05/2021 17:29

I' with you @AliMonkey. Currently thinking of buying thinner duvets than 4.5tog for the kids. They have been using 4.5 all winter. I switched our double 10.5 to 4.5 last week.

StarCourt · 29/05/2021 17:35

@Knittingnanny I'm not a nanny but have arthritis everywhere and I def get it

Comefromaway · 29/05/2021 18:20

I’m only 5 foot 3 and don’t have good co ordination. Ds, dd and dh are all autistic with various other morbidities such as hyper mobility, dyspraxia etc.

I’ve tried every which way to change a duvet cover. It’s hard work and I get out of breath.

Ds’s cover less duvet is still going strong. It’s the same age as our normal duvet which is starting to lose its shape.

Knittingnanny · 29/05/2021 20:55

And the sewing thing, it keeps the cover in place without that pesky annoying bunched up but at the top!
It’s a game changer for me!
I first sewed a cover onto a duvet in 1987 for my toddlers aged 2 and 4!
The only duvetin my house with a removable cover is the December and January one, a 10 tog one. It would fit in my machine but I would need 2 as it wouldn’t be dry by the evening.

Knittingnanny · 29/05/2021 20:56

But not but

Knittingnanny · 29/05/2021 20:56

Have you tried the “ burrito” method to put a cover on? I use it for the winter quilt cover.

Gladioli23 · 29/05/2021 21:12

I think what I wouldn't like in a holiday cottage would be not being able to take the duvet out of the cover if it was boiling weather - obviously if there was a flat sheet or a spare cover available it wouldn't be an issue.

MyDcAreMarvel · 30/05/2021 00:21

@AliMonkey where do you live? The Arctic? no, just northern England Grin

Sixmonthson · 30/05/2021 20:10

Well I’ve made a couple and they seem ok. And they’ve got a nice seaside theme that I couldn’t buy in the shops Smile

Cost me £5 each to make as I already had the cover.

Thanks Knittingnanny for the sewing tips. No more slippery covers!

@Sixmonthson , however carefully I put a loose cover on there is an annoying inch or so at the top which I irrationally hate with a vengeance!
We are onto our one tog duvet with sewn on cover this week, so hurray for a few months of no duvet cover wrestling.
It’s the little things in life....
