Coverless Duvets for bunk beds

Do you think it’s possible to make your own by stitching a cover onto a washable duvet? The ones you can buy are very expensive and there are very limited designs.

Is there a particular reason you want these. It would seem to me that they would be very hard on your washing machine and take ages to dry. Why not a normal duvet with a cover?

AlwaysLatte · 26/05/2021 07:08

We have the night owl ones for our sofa beds and they're great - they wash and dry quickly and can store underneath without creasing. Not overly priced - probably cheaper than a duvet + cover.

Would it not be better to make your own removable cover? As a PP has said, washing a duvet frequently is not good for your machine or the duvet. I am not sure what the advantage of sewing it onto the duvet is?

Moondust001 · 26/05/2021 07:15

There are limited designs yes, but reasonably priced ones are on eBay

babyunicorn · 26/05/2021 07:31

Our nightowl double dries in just over an hour, love them and do not miss having to change a duvet cover!!

M and S also sell them, as well as John Lewis.

Sixmonthson · 26/05/2021 08:13

They are for a holiday home and I’m finding the covers seem to twist on the duvets leaving lots of empty cover at the top which can’t be comfortable. . I was just thinking that I could buy a lightweight 4.5 tog washable quilt in Asda for £5 and use the covers I already have. Being in my late 60’s I’m finding making the bunk beds a challenge and thought this might be a way to make it easier

I do this with my summer weight one tog double duvet. Machine along three sides and wash it , takes an hour to air dry.
Game changer as I hate changing covers
I used to do it years ago with 4 tog singles and they also fitted in the machine ok

DancesWithDaffodils · 26/05/2021 09:05

How often would you be washing the duvet?
I'm not sure "washable" duvets would withstand weekly machining.

Sixmonthson · 26/05/2021 09:33

Thank you, that’s really useful

It wouldn’t be weekly, it’s my grandchildren (or friends children) using them and they wouldn’t be there very often.

I also have a 4 tog m and s double cover less which washes and dries quickly, on its third spring use being washed every 2 weeks. So approx 24 washes so far and no problems with it yet.

Knittingnanny · 26/05/2021 20:22

Your 4 tog Asda idea will be fine. A machining tip, use a long stitch, start from the middle and stitch to the edge, the middle to other edge. Helps prevent puckering
I machine half way down each side edge as well but don’t bother with the popper edge

@AlwaysLatte I've just ordered 2 night owl washable duvets. Hoping they live up to expectation. How do you find washing yours?

Sixmonthson · 27/05/2021 21:23

I already have a couple of m and s ones I bought a few weeks ago but they’ll be too warm for the bunks at 13.5 tog.

It just seemed to me that I can get the same effect for £5 each as I already have the covers. I’ll let you know how I get on! Thanks for the sewing tips knittingnanny

Fine Bedding Company have a 20% off sale on their Night Owl range today

AlwaysLatte · 29/05/2021 14:18

@starcourt they're great - they always come up really well, and dry quickly. I think they're brilliant.

MyDcAreMarvel · 29/05/2021 14:23

4.5 tog will be freezing in all but a heatwave. My children would be sobbing with cold.

StarCourt · 29/05/2021 14:36

@AlwaysLatte they arrived yesterday and so far I'm not keen. The cover material is very slippy and I think
It might get sweaty. I wish they did a cotton 4.5 tog

drspouse · 29/05/2021 14:37

Anyone got any tips for bottom sheets on top bunks, other than multiple layers?

ElGuardiandenoche · 29/05/2021 15:35

I have one that I bought from eBay back in 2013 for my son. It’s faded a bit from washing and drying every two weeks and I’ve just mended a hole in it but it’s done really well for it’s age.

My son makes his own bed and has done since he was about 6, bad mummy that I am 😆 #slavelabour
AliMonkey · 29/05/2021 15:47

@MyDcAreMarvel - where do you live? The Arctic? We are in UK and DS and I would be baking in 4.5 tog in a heatwave - and have 4.5 tog in winter and are still often too warm. Luckily I discovered half and half duvets so DH has 9 tog in his side in winter whilst I have 4.5. In summer a sheet is more than enough for me. We are currently in a holiday cottage and I have over the years learnt to take our own duvets as the kids beds had 9 tog and ours had 13.5 tog either of which would make it impossible for me and DS to sleep. DD was a bit too hot under the 9 tog and it’s only May.

Knittingnanny · 29/05/2021 16:12

@StarCourt I thought that about the marks one when I first bought it, but it’s actually fine. And I was able to use it through the sweaty menopausal nights too!

cocoloco987 · 29/05/2021 16:25

@AliMonkey you must be a warm bunch. We're still on the 13.5 tog and live in a well insulated newish small flat. In a heatwave it might just get pushed down under the arm pits instead of up to chin!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 29/05/2021 16:36

Coverless duvets are worth every penny. I have nightowl ones for every room in the house, I bought one a month. Save so much time and hassle.

AliMonkey · 29/05/2021 16:39

@cocoloco987 - maybe we are the odd ones which would explain why holiday cottages tend to have the 13.5 duvets to cater for you “normal” people. I am peri-menopausal now which makes it worse but only time I’ve ever wanted more than 4.5 tog was when our heating broke one winter - obviously we don’t have heating on overnight but after a month of no heating even I felt cold and even DS was wearing a hoodie in the house. We actually have those duvets with two parts you can stick together so can have any of 4.5,9 or 13.5 tog, we just don’t ever use both parts together - good for providing bedding if you’ve got a crowd staying as long as they don’t mind sleeping on the floor!
