Where do you store potatoes?

The only place thats worked for me has been in the veg drawer in the fridge, I've tried a cupboard, in a sack, dark cool places, they all sprout things within a couple of days.

I know the fridge isn't the best so if anyone has a foolproof way please share?

Thank you :)

I store potatoes in my garage
It's dark and cool
I store them on top of a wooden crate so the sack is not stood on the concrete floor
Works well for me

Veg rack in the kitchen

PostLockdownLife · 26/04/2021 18:19

On my kitchen floor in a wire basket. I have just ordered some sacking to cover them and keep the light out as my potato bag with string on top and a zip at the bottom is past it's best.

Mindymomo · 26/04/2021 19:07

I keep mind under the stairs cupboard in the dark, but potatoes do keep well in the bottom of the fridge. Unfortunately I don’t have room in mine.

Chasingsquirrels · 26/04/2021 19:10

Sack of potatoes in the garage, weekly amount in an old bag for life in a cupboard in the kitchen.

MoreWater · 26/04/2021 19:11

Also in the fridge, as you say.

Planttrees · 26/04/2021 19:12

Same, veg drawer in the fridge.

Silverfly · 26/04/2021 19:13

I just keep mine in the cupboard and chop off the sprouting bits - they're harmless, and as you say potatoes shouldn't be kept in the fridge.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 26/04/2021 19:16

Veg drawer in fridge. No alternative, unfortunately live in a storage sparse house.

BackforGood · 26/04/2021 19:19

In a cupboard, but I take them out of the plastic bag I buy them in and put them into a brown paper bag, so they are in the dark and they are not sweaty.

FeelinHappy · 27/04/2021 08:23

Garage in a paper bag.

Medievalist · 27/04/2021 08:26

I thought you weren't meant to keep potatoes in the fridge? Doesn't it increase toxins/chemicals or something.

Have never found anywhere that works particularly well for me 🤷‍♀️

ThemilkybarsRonme · 27/04/2021 08:33

I have a large bowl on my worktop for veg that don't go in the fridge, but even with a tea towel over the potatoes they go green if they don't get used in a week or so. Do cloth potato bags work? I'm wondering if I should try that.

PattyPan · 27/04/2021 14:50

In one of these in a cooler, darker spot of the kitchen. They still sprout but only a bit.

crazylikechocolate · 27/04/2021 14:59

Veg draw in the fridge , I've tried all other options and they sprout too quickly

Furball · 27/04/2021 15:06

I have mine in a kitchen drawer in an old shoe box with the lid on - so no light gets to them.

And a really good reason to buy a pair of shoes or preferably boots to do get the box to do this Grin

redcandlelight · 27/04/2021 15:09

in a kitchen drawer together with the onions and garlic.
sometimes a pumpkin/squash ends up in there as well

Don't put them in a bowl on the worktop! Light getting to them turns them green and then they're toxic. They need to be in a cool, dark place.

You can definitely just chop the sprouts off and eat the spuds, that's not a problem.

Mrsjayy · 27/04/2021 15:10

Under the sink cupboard I just cut the sprouts off they are harmless really the worst culprit for sprouting potatoes were Aldi

Pyewackect · 27/04/2021 15:12

In the fridge.

mylipsarechapman · 27/04/2021 15:12

I put mine in a cupboard in the kitchen, but to prevent sprouting put an apple in with them. It works!

Mrsjayy · 27/04/2021 15:17

Uncooked potatoes are best kept somewhere cool and dry, but don't keep them in the fridge. Putting potatoes in the fridge can increase the amount of sugar they contain, and lead to higher levels of a chemical called acrylamide when the potatoes are baked, fried or roasted at high temperatures.

Apparently keeping potatoes in the fridge isn't advised.

ThemilkybarsRonme · 27/04/2021 16:00

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername, the tea towel over the top of the bowl was meant to keep the light out. It's just not as effective as I'd like.

I'm going to order the potato bag @PattyPan linked to. That looks great.

DinosaurDiana · 28/04/2021 15:03

In the garage , in the dark.

Oly4 · 28/04/2021 15:05

In a cupboard, I thought fridges weren’t good for starchy veg due to acrylamide
