Garage vs. tunnocks

And so it begins. I am sorting out my late DH’s garage. I am feeling mightily overwhelmed, but it’ll be so great when it’s done. I have budgeted for a new workbench, new flooring, a new unit and paint.

But first clearing, sorting, tip trips. And finding local friends to help me work out what on Earth some of these tools are.

I can help by identifying a cat carry case. Wink

Actually, that doesn't look too bad already OP, for a garage/workshop. I thought you meant you were eating Tunnock's Teacakes and caramel wafers rather than tidying the garage. Perhaps you should. Good luck Flowers

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 20/04/2021 11:39

The car carrier was my first spot too Grin

I find with a garage that if you are ruthless with bin and charity items you can see a visible difference in not too long. Also make sure shelving is efficiently used so that you can see what you're got.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 20/04/2021 11:45

Thank you!

One bonus is that nearly everything in here is genuinely garage stuff - tools etc - not general household stuff. However the disadvantage is that this is not my area of expertise and knowing what to keep is hard.

Oh and that cat carrier was actually most recently used for a chicken Grin

Looks pretty tidy by garage standards to me!Smile

MrsMackesy · 20/04/2021 11:54

I would think in terms of keeping a basic tool kit of things I would use - screwdrivers, hammer, spirit level, tape measure etc. Is there a family member or very close friend or former colleague who would like the rest? Or donate them to a specific charity - isn't there something like tools for Africa, or a local project? Sympathies on your loss, OP. Daffodil

tunnocksreturns2019 · 20/04/2021 12:25

MrsMackesy I would do that but for the fact I have a very handy DS already pretty competent with some tools and almost certainly heading in the engineering direction like his dad.

So I’m going to talk to a neighbour who has DCs in the building/engineering trade and get advice on what to keep, and offer them things like plumbing and electrical fittings if still current; otherwise off to the recycling centre

Haha thanks! I hate the fact I don’t know exactly what’s in here, but I will soon!

I’m stopping for today - other things to do. Tomorrow’s garage tasks:

  1. Check all cans of paint and add dead ones to recycling centre pile
  2. Sort through stuff on top two shelves
  3. Move on to tub of doom on desk if time

On that basis I would be keeping pretty much everything for DS then - not helpful, I know! - as one of my DSs remains disappointed to this day that someone got rid of his late grandpa's tools. Nice - leopard print? - bootlets, by the way, and photos of chickens welcome.

Well done for today.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 23/04/2021 10:35

Please give me praise for my tidy shelves. Some of those tubs are empty too. And yes that’s a cat bed - he likes to chill up there sometimes Grin

So neat and tidy, well done Thanks

tunnocksreturns2019 · 23/04/2021 11:53

Thank you!

The number of tools is totally overwhelming. DH was a tool hoarder for sure, but to be fair he fit our kitchen and bathroom and did all the clever DIY on our house. I just painted skirting and walls, grouted, tiled and chose all the colours and furniture Grin

Hopefully his brother is coming down in a couple of months and he can help me identify things and work out what to keep. Meanwhile enough stuff will have been sorted to get new flooring, new workbench and decorate - hopefully by May half term Smile

Sounds like he was really handy, must have saved a fortune over the years. You're doing a great job in there, little and often, and stop whenever and as soon as you need to.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/08/2021 13:50

I forgot to post to show you how awesome my garage is now Grin

There was a gap in the project because I broke a limb Hmm and there are bits of a go kart DS is building with his godfather on the floor, but I’m so happy with it.

We know where everything is! Miracle.

Wow @tunnocksreturns2019 that looks amazing! Hope the broken limb is now fully repaired!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 05/08/2021 14:52

Thank you! Yes it’s better thanks!

Looks like we’re going to be moving house so it’s even better I’ve got this sorted now 😊

OMG! You’ve done such a good job!

Chasingsquirrels · 05/08/2021 18:42

Wow tunnocks, I started reading and looked at the pictures and was going to post saying best of luck and hope it's not too painful a process, then saw the dates and scrolled down to the bottom. Looks transformed and organised.

I’m so glad it’s done. Helped DS with his room today and we’re half way through, so the whole house is pretty much sorted and decluttered (as far as you can be with very crafty kids and book needs all round).

It feels odd as we’re almost certain to move (waiting for vendor to find house) but we’re all now ready for a change. And all this sorting out will make moving so much easier.

Garage in potential new house is 9 metres long! But I’m planning to divide it into two to create a utility.

Wow, that is amazing!

You have inspired me to sort out our garage. DF died 3 years ago, and I still have the contents of his loft in there, together with lots of our stuff that doesn't fit in out loft!

Nix32 · 06/08/2021 09:24

Looks amazing! I remember your original thread - good luck with the move.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 06/08/2021 09:27

I just popped on for the teacakes @tunnocksreturns2019 but I do love a garage transformation!

Well done OP - it must feel great to have everything so organised

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/08/2021 09:33

Well I'm torn.. I inspired to do something similar now but feel that I'll fail fairly early on. This usually happens when I get sidetracked having discovered some old thing that I had forgotten about (not Grandad!).
