TBH I'm not the most houseproud of people and have a tendency to do things when I see they need doing, rather than having a routine (which I'm sure is a far better way to have a clean house)

I vacuum and mop downstairs most days as we have a dog.
I dust about 3 x week
Clean oven when it looks dirty (I use oven liner for the bottom which helps)
Clean bathroom once weekly properly, but wipe the sink and loo more often (variable)
Vacuum bedrooms once a week
Change beds fortnightly (Kim and Aggy said that was fine on their clean house tv show, so blame them)
Rarely clean the washing machine (apart from wiping the front)
Clean dishwasher every couple of weeks (as in take filter out etc)

I could do with doing more tbh, I often notice things like skirting boards/door frames need wiping down and ought to add them in as routine but always forget, and don't tend to dust things I can't see 🤦‍♀️

chipsndippy · 18/04/2021 17:29

I clean fridge about once a month but I should do it weekly...sorry MN, I'm a slattern.

Aquamarine1029 · 18/04/2021 17:31

Hoover the carpets - Everyday. I also have a robot hoover. I don't have carpeting but I do have several large rugs.

Mop the floor - The kitchen everyday with a steam mop. Takes just a minute. The wood floors in the rest of the house once a week.

Clean toilets - every other day usually

Clean dishwasher - when needed

Clean washing machine - when needed

Cut grass - when needed

Change bedsheets - at least once a week, usually every 5 days

Dust - everyday, here and there. Dusting is a never ending battle so I don't get too worked up about it. Quick swipes with a duster regularly.

Clean bathroom/toilet - a deep clean once a week, a quick daily wiping of surfaces

Clean oven - when needed

Clean fridge - on going, as needed

I think some things depend on your lifestyle, kids, pets, etc. I have 5 cats and I can't abide dirty floors so I need to run my robot vac everyday and do a full hoover about 3 times a week. My one absolute is that the kitchen is clean every single day before bed, no exceptions. Waking up to a grotty kitchen is a horrible way to start your day.

FindingMeno · 18/04/2021 17:34

I do it when I can't get away with it any longer.

Eyevorbig0ne · 18/04/2021 17:36

Hoover the carpets every fortnight upstairs only
Mop the floor downstairs once weekly
Clean toilets when they ming
Clean dishwasher once a fortnight
Clean washing machine yearly
Cut grass when the daisies get out of hand
Change bedsheets when they smell
Dust when the sunshine reveals it
Clean bathroom/toilet when they ming
Clean oven when I can't see through the glass door
Clean fridge when it's dirty

RizzleRazzle · 18/04/2021 17:38

FelicityPike · 18/04/2021 17:38

RizzleRazzle · 18/04/2021 17:39

Oh and I wash up and wipe down the kitchen every day

BackforGood · 18/04/2021 17:49

....and have a tendency to do things when I see they need doing, rather than having a routine

This ^
I keep a spray and a cloth in the bathroom, so clean it when I'm in there, rather than thinking "Oh, it's Sunday, I must clean it" sort of thing. Ditto the other toilet.

I vacuum when it looks like it needs doing.
So the hallway might be once a week, bedrooms far less often

The only floor I mop is the kitchen - again, tends to be done when I think it looks like it needs it. Perhaps twice in 3 weeks ? But it depends on if anything has been spilled.

Clean dishwasher ??? Confused It is only used for cleaning. It has hot water and detergent through it every time it is used. I've never cleaned a dishwasher in my life and can go back to my Mum having them since the early 1970s and she never cleaned a dishwasher either.

Clean fridge - when you see something on the shelf when you look in - might be weeks and weeks or could be two days running if someone spills something

Clean oven - about once a year

Iammum1990 · 18/04/2021 17:50

I am surprised how often people clean things... I must be so gross. In my old house I didn't clean the fridge in over a year, and didn't do the oven for two years. I also went weeks without hoovering 😵

OP posts:
Iammum1990 · 18/04/2021 17:50

And didn't mop the kitchen floor in 2 years, but I did go over it with a floor wipe every month or so

OP posts:
StillUpholding · 18/04/2021 17:51

Hoover the carpets - weekly (but have a cordless vac and will whizz over the kitchen, hall or living room if they are looking a bit crumby/muddy
Mop the floor - weekly, with the odd spot clean between
Clean toilets - quick 2 min wipe over most mornings along with the sink
Clean dishwasher - aim for monthly. Probably more like every 3
Clean washing machine - see above
Cut grass - when it needs doing
Change bedsheets - every week to 10 days unless
Dust- weekly and I include skirting boards and checking for cobwebs
Clean bathroom/toilet - weekly
Clean oven - glass bit of door every few months. Inside... rarely
Clean fridge - quick wipe after a big shop so every other week or so. Properly maybe once a month

Other jobs I try to do regularly:
-I clean a couple of windows/mirrors a week
-Doors and light switches seem to get grubby in our house so I wipe a few each week
-Hob is wiped after most uses but gets a proper clean once a month, and the kitchen benches, cupboard fronts and kettle/toaster once a month too
-Hoover filters monthlyish

I loosely follow Flylady where you do a different ’zone’ each week as well as a quick weekly clean. I probably spend about 2-3 hours per week on housework, spread out over 2-3 sessions. I don’t worry too much if not everything gets done one week though.

StillUpholding · 18/04/2021 17:57

When I said the benches get a wipe once a month, I meant a through wipe ie everything moved off. They get a quick wipe over after every meal prep as well.

BackforGood · 18/04/2021 18:07

I'm often stunned when housework is discussed on MN too IamAMum Grin
I think what happens, is a couple of the people who love cleaning come on with their incredibly high standards, and then a lot of more normal people slope away when they see what some have posted, as they don't want to be accused of being mingers which too many posters are quick to do.

I've been an adult for decades, so occasionally in different paces (staffroom at work or something, so not just family) something has been asked along these lines, and I've never met anyone who cleans a fraction of the amounts of anyone on here.

Ihatesandwiches · 18/04/2021 18:11

I've been using The organised mum method for a few years now and it's great. House is tidy and relatively clean and I don't stress about cleaning any more!

Me too! Highly recommended
Viviennemary · 18/04/2021 18:13

When people say clean dishwasher do they mean run a dishwasher cleaner through. Of actually clean it out by hand.

Bluntness100 · 18/04/2021 18:15

Op this depends on how many people live there, ages and if any pets. It’s just the two of us unless our daughter visiting. No pets. We have a cleaner weekly so is inc in the below.

Hoover the carpets - twice weekly
Mop the floor weekly
Clean toilets weekly properly with a wipe round in between, shower after each use.
Clean dishwasher every couple of months
Clean washing machine as above
Cut grass depends, but in summer every week to two weeks.
Change bedsheets weekly
Dust weekly
Clean bathroom/toilet weekly
Clean oven annually get a guy to do it, I do a wipe regularly
Clean fridge ecery two months or so.

UntamedWisteria · 18/04/2021 18:16

My cleaner comes once a week and does most of the things on your list.

Except cleaning dishwasher, oven & fridge. Oven is self cleaning, dishwasher we run a cleaning cycle once in a blue moon, and fridge probably about once a month.

DH cuts the grass when it needs doing. Once a week in peak growing season, probably about every 2 weeks most of the time, but not at all in winter.

megletthesecond · 18/04/2021 18:18

My oven is 5 years old and I've only given it one decent chemical clean. It's one reason to eat mainly a veggie diet, hardly any grease builds up.

BestOption · 18/04/2021 18:18

I'm struggling with health issues (from before Covid) so I don't things as often anymore, so this is what I DO, not what I'd consider ideal.

Hoover the carpets
Mop the floor
Clean toilets
Clean dishwasher
Clean washing machine
Cut grass
Change bedsheets
Dust
Clean bathroom/toilet
Clean oven
Clean fridge
Any others I am missing?

Oblomov21 · 18/04/2021 18:20

I don't recognise any of this.
None of my friends, no one I know cleans their fridge every week. I do mine a few times per year.

StillUpholding · 18/04/2021 19:05

I’d happily only do my fridge a few times a year, but it seems that everytime I open it there’s milk sloshed somewhere, something mouldy stuck to the back, bits of broccoli all over and some obscure sauce of DH’s has leaked.

Viviennemary I mean run a cleaning cycle and maybe wipe round the seal.

StillUpholding · 18/04/2021 19:23

I am surprised how often people clean things... I must be so gross. In my old house I didn't clean the fridge in over a year, and didn't do the oven for two years. I also went weeks without hoovering

I did the same in our old place, pre-DC, but I then always had to do a big panic clean if someone was coming over. Everyone now and then I’d get sick of the place being manky and spend a full Saturday deep cleaning, only for it to start getting messed up within hours. I used to struggle to relax and would feel guilty sitting on the sofa when I could see the place needed cleaning.

For me, doing it more frequently and in a routine works much better. The housework isn’t something hanging over me to feel guilty about anymore. Plus, because I do it regularly, then the list of jobs above that would have taken most of the day in the old days is done in no time. I do it against a timer to make me work faster. Once the time is up I stop. I am much happier with how things are, but it’s actually less effort. I have my set times for doing it and then the rest of my time off is free.

It’s your home though. If your happy doing those things less then that’s fine. I have friends who do more cleaning than me and friends who do lots less. I’m dying to be able to go round for a cuppa to all of them equally.

StillUpholding · 18/04/2021 19:33

Apologies, just realised that sounds like I’m saying your place must be manky. It depends on who else lives there and how messy you all are, that amount might well be fine. Mine was manky though Blush and the last clean of inside of my oven probably isn’t far off that
