Have i wrecked my log burner??

KevinBaconsMoustache · 14/03/2021 13:09

Brand new. First use. Put in one of the wrapped paper log pulled things. Sat and watched it burn beautifully. And then the black tar like substance filled the glass door. Because it's for open fires not log buners. And I didn't see that until ooh, about 3 hours in. I've tried water, white spirits, ceramic hob cleaner, ethanol, maths and nothing is shifting it. I've wrecked it haven't I??

The bat way I’ve found of cleaning the glass on the wood burner is to dip damp newspaper into the ash and use that to polish the glass. However, I don’t know if that will work here. If all else fails, I believe it’s possible to have the glass replaced.

NoWayHosier · 14/03/2021 13:11

No, it will gradually burn off when your stove gets to a hot enough temperature. I light my fires like this:

3 - 4 bits of kindling in a tent shape, with 1 inch cube of firelighter underneath. Balance one log against this. Light it. Close door, open both vents fully. Keep them open until the log has fully caught.

Some people find wiping damp newspaper on the glass after dipping it in the ashes works, but I've always gone for the 'kill it with fire' approach.

Bluntness100 · 14/03/2021 13:12

Use hg stove glass cleaner. None of that stuff will clean it.

I doubt you’ve ruined it. Can you post a link to what you burned.?

SirVixofVixHall · 14/03/2021 13:12

Is it definitely glass and not mica ?

Etulosba · 14/03/2021 13:12

I use non-scratch kitchen cleaner. The creamy stuff.

CMOTDibbler · 14/03/2021 13:13

The Lakeland log burner glass cleaner will get it off

KevinBaconsMoustache · 14/03/2021 13:18

Thanks. The ash hasn't worked. Here is what I put in
www.amazon.co.uk/Duraflame-Fire-Logs-2-72kg/dp/B009HXIG98?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
Don't know if the glass us or mica tbh. The instruction booklet is, let's say, slender.

Just run a hot burn a few times to try to burn it off.

There's no need to use firelighters to light a stove, at least not in mine (never used any in 11 years of ownership).

I put in scrunched up newspaper or packing paper first, then kindling on top, then a couple of small logs on top of that. Make sure that the primary air vent is fully open to begin with while it gets going then gradually shut it off and the stove's airwash will then kick in.

I only clean the glass manually once a year, usually in May or June, when I clean it up ready for the next winter.

boopidoo · 14/03/2021 13:24

Not ref glass, but our installer taught us a neat trick for lighting fires, so easy and it never fails.

Two medium logs at the bottom. Then some kindle. Then firelighter on top.

Completely counterintuitive, but sooo much easier than the traditional firelighter/kindle/logs. Think he said it's how they do it in Norway or Sweden - no idea if that's true though

DareIask · 14/03/2021 13:27

Hob brite works a treat and you can pick it up in supermarkets

80sMum · 14/03/2021 13:32

Interesting that people use firelighters. In mine, they're not needed.
I love my stove! I know I'm biased but I think it's the best of the bunch. It's a Clearview Pioneer 400

KevinBaconsMoustache · 14/03/2021 13:32

Thanks they weren't firelighters but a log replacement thing for, apparently, open fires. I just didn't see the small printConfused. Will try some hob Brite, thanks. Its just like tar. Black thick sticky.

Before trying to clean it off try burning off.
Fill the stove up twice that should burn the top residue. Do you have a stove thermometer?

OooPourUsACupLove · 14/03/2021 13:39

If the worst comes to the worst you can buy replacement glass and fit it as a simple DIY.

The glass in ours cracked and I was gutted, but it turns out it’s fairly common to crack over time so it’s considered a replaceable part. It cost about 20 pounds and took DH and me 10 minutes to replace it.

Alternista · 14/03/2021 13:40

Burn a super hot fire.

KevinBaconsMoustache · 14/03/2021 13:42

Oh that's good to know. Gives me some hopeGrin
No stove thermometer. Not sure why i wojld need one. Can you tell i am a stove newbieConfused

We've also replaced our glass ourselves, it's easy to do.

TheQueef · 14/03/2021 13:49

You need a thermometer or you could be burning too cold.
If you burn solid fuel too cold it leaves a residue on the inside of your chimney that can catch fire and burn again. Chimney fires are terribad.
Honestly take five minutes to read up on how to use a multi stove it's safer and you will use fuel efficiently.
Also buy a thermometer and gauntlets if you don't have any Smile

chestnutmares · 14/03/2021 13:49

The HG stove glass cleaner stuff is like magic.

sylbunny · 14/03/2021 13:49

We use this if the ash on a newspaper trick doesn't work.

2 X Gel Stove Glass Cleaner https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07Z4L4Y8N/ref=cmswwrcppapifabcc_TA69YRP78YWRWKZHDY2E

KevinBaconsMoustache · 14/03/2021 14:05

Thanks, Queef the issue comes from me using a firelog designed for open fires not log burners. Its the coating/residue from the paper wrapper that's caused the tar like substance.

OP posts:
KevinBaconsMoustache · 14/03/2021 14:06

Thanks sylbunny. Its out of stock so maybe not just me making this mistake😁

Ooh, this upside down stove lighting is exciting, I’m going to give it a go right now!

boopidoo · 14/03/2021 15:45

@NoWayHosier do it!! Sometimes DH does log, firelighter, kindle - either way it works! I love it (can you tell Grin)
