How often do you get your carpets professionally cleaned?

Not the DIY versions.

If you get professionally cleaned - how often?

I get them done once a year, after winter. Absolutely love it after done! Wondering if excessive to have done twice a year!

@Littlefluffyclouds13

Never but we don't wear shoes inside and the floors that aren't carpeted are immaculate and whole house just needs a regular hoover to keep clean.
It really doesn’t. Even with no shoes on carpeted areas they get dirty. Carpets need cleaning, dirt gets ground in when you walk on them that no hoover can touch. Honestly even with no shoes you need to clean your carpets. Guarantee you’ll be amazed at the dirt that comes out.
Littlefluffyclouds13 · 07/03/2021 09:34

I've had them cleaned once, as I had my sofas done, honestly it was a waste of money. I saw what came out!
We have hard flooring everywhere apart from the bedrooms and living room.

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 07/03/2021 09:35

The sofa clean was worth it but I'd honestly prefer to spend money on something else!

lazylinguist · 07/03/2021 09:36

Never. Got rid of all the carpets and went for leather sofas. So much cleaner and less hassle!

Having said that, I never had a carpet cleaned when I did have carpets. I can well imagine that lots of dirt does come out if you do. But I'd question the claim that they 'need' to be professionally cleaned. What happens if you don't? As long as your carpet smells fine and looks clean, I don't see the problem really. I bet loads of people never have them cleaned.

BurgundyBells · 07/03/2021 09:47

Watching your carpets being cleaned and the colour of the water that comes out is the best and most satisfying thing ever Grin

Agree that anyone who thinks their carpets are 'clean' are kidding themselves.

When we do ours, we always start on the 'clean' bits - the edges and corners of the room that look pristine to the naked eye as opposed to the more used 'walkways'. The water still comes out a murky grey colour - even from the bits of carpet that very rarely get stood on.

Bluntness100 · 07/03/2021 10:00

Yes, it’s because dust gets trampled into thr carpet, or it settles into it.

Saying you don’t need to clean your carpet is like saying you don’t need to mop hard floors. Just a Hoover or brush will do. It doesn’t, it’s just in carpets you sometimes can’t see it, because it darkens so slowly.

By the time the dirt becomes visible or the carpet is a different shade under the furniture, then it’s proper filthy.

LunaHardy · 07/03/2021 10:08

Question: do you need to move all of the furniture out of the rooms to have it done professionally? I normally use a hired rug doctor twice a year and just do the areas I can get to. But definitely want professional doing in the spring - sofas too! Agreed that carpets can get grim even if they don't look it!

HeathIns · 07/03/2021 10:13

I mopped my kitchen floor for the first time in 6 months the other week (I can hear some MNetters squealing in horror already) I vacuum it regularly and wipe up spills.

I was expecting absolute filth to be mopped up but the water was barely murky.
I’ve had carpets done once and hated it. Everything left damp.
I think this all depends on whether you have pets or, at a push very young children...

lazylinguist · 07/03/2021 10:19

I have a big dog and a cat, and live in a fairly rural area where it's muddy a lot of the time, so decided that hard floors were definitely the way forward! I actually prefer the look of them anyway.

Sleepyquest · 07/03/2021 10:20

Every 6 months. You wouldn't believe how dirty they get! I recommend it, it can be expensive but really makes your home feel clean.

AlwaysLatte · 07/03/2021 10:25

I do it myself, I bought a really good Rug Doctor, and clean them a couple of times a year or more of something happens like some red wine that got spilled a couple of months ago!

littlemisslozza · 07/03/2021 10:26

Had ours done recently, for the first time professionally. Downstairs we have wooden floors and tiles apart from one room where the carpet was really in need of a good clean even though no shoes are allowed in there. Bedroom carpets were not so bad but the stairs had marks. I was really pleased with the result and will probably get it done every couple of years now. The colour of the water was disgusting! I will get the sofas done next time too. It was £190 for a four bedroom three storey house, although only one room to do on the ground floor.

Bythemillpond · 07/03/2021 15:10

I have hard flooring everywhere for 2 reasons
I don’t think carpets are clean and I hate the sound of a vacuum cleaner so prefer to use a brush.
I prefer bare floorboards to carpet which gets filthy fast. Even if you are cleaning your carpets 2 or 3 times per year you live with dirty carpets for months between cleans

Hadalifeonce · 07/03/2021 15:38

Mine are done every year or 2. 10m X 5m (ish) about 120. My carpet has been down about 17 years, it only looks a couple of years old, cleaning regularly definitely lengthens the life of carpets.

didireallysaythat · 07/03/2021 20:20

Quite jealous of everyone's super cheap carpet cleaning companies. I'd love to get them done twice a year but that's £1000 (a week's holiday). I guess I'll stick to the HSS one and the Screwfix detergent which is dirt cheap compared to rug doctor

RedRiverShore · 07/03/2021 21:30

We just hire one from the hire shop round the corner from us, usually in spring, though we missed last year as it was closed for a lot of time, so we must do them this year. DH does it, he likes the exercise. I have a Vax cordless that I do the caravan carpets with as they are taken out and done outside with the rugs in the summer so they dry well

So we never get them professionally cleaned as we do them ourselves

Angelik · 07/03/2021 21:40

Good powerful vacuum enough. A lot of what comes out is fibre and dirt being sucked up from underlay that traps it from underneath (if on floorboards). I discovered this years ago and when buying carpets since have been advised by salespeople NOT to wash.

Wow, your house must be massive, I’m in one of the most expensive places in the Uk and for a four bed, it’s about a third of that. I guess your house is like eleven bedrooms?

They want you to keep buying carpet..
Chewingle · 08/03/2021 10:42

@Angelik

You’re being conned. The clue is “salespeople”.
Read the warranty on new carpets, from the manufacturers. Mine have all advised professionally cleaned regularly

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 08/03/2021 13:41

All carpet manufacturers recommend regular deep cleaning, becayse it reduces the carpets appearance and damages rhe fibres otherwise.

I can’t believe any sales person recommended not cleaning your carpets. If that was true, it would have me walking out from the incompetent fool.

didireallysaythat · 08/03/2021 23:45

@Bluntness100 😄 No, it's 4 bedrooms and 2 receptions. But £5 (+vat) per square metre makes my lounge alone £192. Hence £500 a go for the house was cheap (when the house was empty and easier).

Midlifephoenix · 08/03/2021 23:49

I own my own machine so it gets done every couple of months. I wouldn't pay for it to be professionally done.

Keepyourdistance000 · 08/03/2021 23:59

Once again MN has proved to me that I live in a parallel universe. I didn't realise regular professional carpet cleaning is a thing.

Fluffycloudland77 · 09/03/2021 09:46

Don’t worry @Keepyourdistance000, I’m laying hard flooring rather than shampoo them.
