Do you have a big glass shower enclosure and is it a pain to clean?

Currently doing the badthroom and we were going for a big glass shower enclosure but now thinking it will break my heart trying to keep it clean. The other option is to put up a panel wall and tile it but the bathroom is a small and due to the layout this would mean no space for storage of towels, toiletries etc. Do you have one like the pic and would you have put in an easier to clean option instead if you could go back?
Any opinions appreciated

I have one. I just keep some viakal handy and give it a good clean once a week from inside when I'm having my shower. Use a rubber squeegee after each use. No problem.

Crazybirdlady · 09/02/2021 22:27

The other option would be something like this but the panel wall would go to the ceiling. It would mean no storage and it would block a lot of light, but less cleaning. It's the only shower in the house so will be used 5 times a day.

We had one like that in our old house and it was a bit of a pain to keep spotless (hard water area). In this house we have just gone for single panels, not an enclosure, and much better to keep clean. But the whole tray etc does take up a lot of space.

Crazybirdlady · 09/02/2021 22:29

Thanks Mrsbrowns. I was thinking about the squeegee after each use, but I know I'm the only one that would ever bother to do it and it will probably be one more thing for me to nag about!

Squeegee after every use, viakal to clean with micro fibre cloth once a week. Works in our hard water area.

Once stayed at my cousin’s in Guernsey & the water was so soft the drops just faded away and that was that Envy !!

GooodMythicalMorning · 09/02/2021 22:31

yes bit very hard water area so viakal doesn't help too much. It's also about 20 years old (we only bought a year ago) so needs replacing really. Mine is always left looking streaky.

MaryIsA · 09/02/2021 22:32

We’ve got one but very soft water. Squeegie after every use, and use that shower spray daily. Ok so far.

Twistiesandshout · 09/02/2021 22:33

yes 1.4m x 1m and LOVE it! It is a pain to clean but worth it.

merrygoround88 · 09/02/2021 22:33

Square one is better and I use the karcher window cleaner - works a treat

stillonthattightrope · 09/02/2021 22:34

We spray daily with method shower spray and squeegee a few times a week. Clean it properly once a week.
Seems ok so far.

JetBlackSteed · 09/02/2021 22:40

Sorry Crazy, if you've 5 showers a day in that and no one else is cleaning and squeegee it down after themselves, your heart will indeed be broken.
Less glass is your aim.
Anyway you can get three sides tiles and one glass in another corner?
Wet room type style maybe, enclosed three sides in tiles, 3/4 glass door and tiled floor sloping with no tray?

Justbetweenus · 09/02/2021 22:48

Unless you have really good ventilation, a tiled wall might be harder to keep pristine and mould free. I think glass panels are far easier to keep looking good.

BowlerHatPowerHat · 09/02/2021 22:52

We had one similar to that and it was a real pain to clean. We changed the layout and now have a single glass panel. Plumber said not to use any bathroom cleaner on it - just fairy liquid occasionally.
We use a squeegee after every use and all is good.

Andi2020 · 09/02/2021 22:58

I use baby shampoo to keep the shine on outside and inside.
Clean down with shower if someone comes out without cleaning send them back in, they soon get used to it then.
You use It, you clean it.

Whythesadface · 09/02/2021 23:04

Bargain Homes have an Astonish shower Cleaner.
You spray it on and go.
Was shocked at just how clean our soapy screens became far far cleaner than any time we tried to clean them.

Admittedly we're in a soft water area (Scotland) but ours never get too bad. 3 showers, 5 people and Makti glass enclosures - think they have some coating ?

I have trained the kids to rinse any stray shampoo / gel off the walls and doors though.

I think for you it would depend how dark it'd be being walls rather than glass. I like a nice bright shower.

KarmaNoMore · 09/02/2021 23:29

Avoid the one with curved glass, it makes using the squeegee a hassle

gracelessladyhottramp · 09/02/2021 23:30

Yes and yes

Fozzleyplum · 09/02/2021 23:33

I have a shower like the corner one op has posted. We're in a hard water area and I'm so fed up with the losing battle against scale, that I'm having it replaced with a tiled enclosure and pivot door. It would not be an issue if our water was soft.

Lemoncurd · 09/02/2021 23:34

Just tried to tackle one just like in your picture today. It is a pain due to the runners and lots of places to trap limescale. To clean inside you have to shut yourself in, which I hate as I don't like breathing in the products. The curves are also much harder to do cleanly with a squeegee. Think it was new in June last year but looks awful now as grime is trapped in the seals and the door runners seem to keeping falling apart.

In our house, all of the showers are having simple screens installed. In the family bathroom we have had a tiled wall built next to the shower so it will be tiled on three sides and have a rimless flat door. Decided against doing half glass on the side wall (next to the bath) as we thought water might pool on the wall.

I second the avoid curved glass. Straight glass and a Karcher window vac. It’s strangely satisfying to use to the point that DH even does it! Quick ‘vac’ after each shower and no polishing/ scrubbing needed.

Tinkletwat · 09/02/2021 23:38

It's not the glass that's a pain to keep clean it's the frames in the examples you've shown. I find they get mouldy quickly and would always go for just the screen and some sort of frameless design

Crazybirdlady · 09/02/2021 23:40

OK. I think I'm leaning towards 3 tiled walls, one glass door.
I know with the enclosure I'll start out with the best of intentions but DH and 3 DSs are not going to be arsed to squeegee a curved glass enclosure, there's no point trying to convince myself otherwise. Goodbye nice bright bathroom with storage Sad
Thank you all for the advice, and those of you who's kids squeegee the shower after every use, you have my admiration.

Just spray method shower spray all over the glass when your having a shower. It will just drip off and be flawless
