Best coffee maker for ground coffee to reduce waste

JumpLeadsForTwo · 28/01/2021 07:42

I love proper coffee, don't have a coffee maker but my individual cafetière has just smashed!
I'd love ideas for a simple coffee maker that I can take to work with minimal fuss (especially on the cleaning side) and as eco as possible. I love the idea of coffee bags which are compostable however they come individually wrapped in plastic.
A quick google has shown me this - anyone have one and are they any good? Any other suggestions?

I used to have a Nespresso machine and used compostable pods that I bought from Waitrose made by The Eden Project. I think they have 2 or 3 different ones.

Possuminthereddress · 28/01/2021 07:49

Aero press! One of the best things I’ve ever bought. Have a look at the mini if you will be taking it to and from work

horseymum · 28/01/2021 07:54

Aero press here too, minimal size and no waste. Get a small herb grinder to grind your beans too.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 28/01/2021 08:11

I'm not keen on a machine as such, just because it will be mainly for work, but have heard about the compostable pods which sound great.
Aeropress - I've never seen one, but looks ideal, thank you. It comes with paper filters but one reviewer mentions a reusable metal filter - do either of you have one?

I use the paper, I’m not keen to get the metal as I assume it will be harder to clean up - at the moment I just ‘pop’ the filter and coffee grounds straight into the bin!

We have the aeropress with reusable filter. It’s fab.
We also have stove top one (actually like 4 due to sizes) like this

Our coffee comes from the zero waste shop.

pickingdaisies · 28/01/2021 08:49

Some coffee bags are wrapped in a foil bag that can go in the compost. Sorry, can't remember the make.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 28/01/2021 22:27

I know you can buy your own empty paper tea bag type things that I’m sure are compostable. So you could use those with your own coffee?

I did look at the aeropress but even in their video it seemed like a huge faff to ‘craft’ your own coffee.

@TheLittleRedToothbrush

Maybe not for work unless you have use of a stove but after having several different machines etc I'm now using a Moka and it's fab ! So much cheaper too
2nd this ... doesn't take long to fill and brew. I'm a bit gross and only properly clean mine every 3rd brew , just tip water dregs and ground S away in between.

Love my Mokka pot Grin

TheThreeHeadedBeast · 28/01/2021 22:39

I have one of these for work. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0056ZVVHA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_Y3AY6Y55FYCW527Q8X2Y?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
And a DeLongi for home www.delonghi.com/en-gb/ec685-bk-dedica-manual-espresso-maker/p/EC685.BK
However I like black coffee best, but still have the opportunity to make a cappuccino etc for guests.
The DeLongi has a metal reusable pod and I grind my own coffee, my electric grinder must be nearly 30 years old now!

coachmylife · 28/01/2021 22:48

I love my moka and apparently you can get electric ones?

Aeropress is great too and although we have paper filters I use the metal one for preference.

MoonGeek · 29/01/2021 01:15

For work I use a mini pour over coffee pot with paper filters (easier to clean up than the metal ones) or you can get a cone that sits on top of your mug. The filters are compostable, so you just lift it out into the food waste. So easy.

I've just upgraded to a milk heater/ frother as well .... perfect ! [/quote]
Oooh I've been thinking of getting one lately ... what one did you get? I'm trying to be a bit more minimalist in my kitchen as we're short of space so generally avoiding new bits and bobs but if it's a good one, not too cumbersome I will make exceptions, especially for great coffee Grin

That is quite nice looking. Initially looked at pic too quickly, mused I'd never heard of the brand Aircock Grin

JumpLeadsForTwo · 29/01/2021 12:49

Lots of great ideas, thanks. I'll do a bit of investigating. Hadn't even considered a milk frother!!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 29/01/2021 12:51

I have a one cup reusable filter that sits over the top of a cup/mug. It's like a nylon mesh, but I got it from a charity shop. No paper waste either. If I can find something similar, I'll link to it.

Nordstrom · 29/01/2021 12:51

V60 dripper. Ditched my aero press in favour of this and haven't looked back

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 29/01/2021 12:55

One cup jobbie here

Lougle · 29/01/2021 13:01

DH has 3 coffee machines (well, 4 but one is in the loft).

Ninja which is great for making a big cafetiere or a single mug.

Siphon with bamboo filter.

His favourite for work is the Aeropress. He takes it with him every day.
