Best coffee maker for ground coffee to reduce waste

I love proper coffee, don't have a coffee maker but my individual cafetière has just smashed!
I'd love ideas for a simple coffee maker that I can take to work with minimal fuss (especially on the cleaning side) and as eco as possible. I love the idea of coffee bags which are compostable however they come individually wrapped in plastic.
A quick google has shown me this - anyone have one and are they any good? Any other suggestions?

I have coffee cones like the one pictured. They are great for making just one cup or for travelling. You need to line them with a disposable paper filter but they are compostable -I put mine in the food waste bin.

Most days though I want more than one cup and so I use an electric filter machine. They aren't expensive and seem to last indefinitely. The one in our holiday home cost 9.99 and is 20 years old. They use the same paper filters as the cones but I only use one a day instead of the 3/4 a day with the cone. They all seem to come with timers so your coffee can be ready for you when you come down in the morning but I've never actually bothered with them.

Adult DD who is home for lockdown turns her nose up at my filter machine and has established a small branch of Costa in the laundry room with an espresso machine, milk steamer, grinder, syrups etc etc. It all cost a small fortune and it's much more time consuming than pressing a button on my machine but it smells amazing and she needs a lockdown hobby!

DH rises above all this. He hates coffee and sticks to teabags and is very happy that his favourite brand has gone plastic free.

Cafetière all the way.

Aeropress here too. I've tried a couple of different metal filters but found them not fine enough - so water not being pushed through at pressure.

I have one of these and the coffee grounds go in the compost. No paper filters or pods, very eco friendly 😊

Aeropress here, very easy and quick to use and clean, tiny paper filters come in a 350 pack. I have a V60 but the filters are expensive and I'm not sure I've mastered the technique. Never owned a Moka pot but the Aeropress suits the sort of strong-ish black coffee I like.

Another vote for Aeropress. We’ve had ours getting on 5 years and have used the same reusable metal filter the entire time.

The rubber bung bit recently went loose on ours, and we were able to get a replacement one for a couple of pounds.

I only use a small drip filter which sits on my mug. So easy. Cheap. No fuss. Constantly rated the best way to make straightforward filter coffee.
Also use cafetière if I need more then one cup.
Have never ever understood huge massively expensive coffee machines tbh. Such a waste of everything.
Best to wet the paper with hot water before putting grounds in. Some papers have some taste which it’s good to get rid of (lively online debates about this but I’ve conducted my own taste test with Melita brown filters and definitely prefer it if ive rinsed filter first (added bonus - you’ve warmed your cup). Can’t always be bothered to do it though.

katrina I took one of those around the world with me for a few decades. Finally recycled it in India before coming home. It was a moment. That might had seen a lot. Great product although mine got a bit stiff with age (don’t we all).

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 03/02/2021 12:04

@AngusThermopyle DH bought me one of those, couldn't get on with it. It was as if there wasn't enough room for the grounds to move around to get strong coffee. I like my coffee fairly strong, so maybe that makes a difference. TBF Lakeland were very good, as they are 99.9% of the time, refunded, and said put it in the charity shop, so win for everyone.

@Lougle

DH has 3 coffee machines (well, 4 but one is in the loft).

Ninja which is great for making a big cafetiere or a single mug.

]] with bamboo filter.

His favourite for work is the Aeropress. He takes it with him every day.

that siphon reminds me of the Kona that DH's parents still have. Must write our name on it.

They're fun, aren't they? 😁

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 03/02/2021 19:01

I can't get over how much those V60 china things are!!
£30??? They must cost pennies to make...

I think the Whittard suggestion is a good one. I've just repurposed a Bodum tea strainer that sits in the mug.

HeronLanyon · 03/02/2021 21:23

I use a plastic filter cone - one of my local coffee places sells them for 75p. But you have to ask - they’re behind the counter 😂

NotMeNoNo · 03/02/2021 21:33

There are usually a few Biallit cone drippers in TK Maxx (when it opens)
