Glamorizing cleaning

I want to glam up my cleaning Xmas Grin
Tell me what you do to raise the bar. For starters, I bought some good quality thin cotton gloves a couple of weeks ago. Now, whenever I clean, I slather my hands in moisturiser, shove the gloves on, and off I go, adding a pair of marigolds on top for bathrooms etc.
I light a candle/set the diffuser going in the room I'm working in to make it smell nice it gives me a luxurious feeling.
I also made my own hoover powder with bicarb of soda and some essential oils so it smells lovely when I hoover.
Tell me what you do to make cleaning (more) enjoyable!

Oh and I often use a lovely Rituals room spray after I've finished in the room to leave it smelling gorgeous.

Ooh what a nice idea for a thread! Watching with interest and will try and think of something nice to add.

stillfeelingmad · 14/12/2020 16:36

I always Make myself and dh a fancy coffee when we're cleaning to cheer us up Grin

RunningFromInsanity · 14/12/2020 16:36

Is your hoover powder basically like shake and vacs? Because I use so much of that it would probably be cheaper to make my own

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 14/12/2020 17:00

@RunningfromInsanity yes, it's the same idea. It's just plain bicarb - you can buy in bulk off Amazon, and then got some reasonably cheap essential oils from Naturally Balmy. You shake on, leave for 20mins to let the bicarb kill some bugs then vac. I punched some holes in the plastic lid of a jar.

Listen to an audiobook!

BiscuitDrama · 14/12/2020 17:21

I’d also say choose something interesting to listen to, whether it’s music or a podcast or something.

I don’t think the bicarbonate is antibacterial, just absorbs smells but that’s fine, bacteria can’t live on a dry carpet for long.

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 14/12/2020 17:32

BingoWings thank you! Xmas Smile
Still yes I try and stop once an hour and get myself a nice cup of tea, but I find I get all flustered after I start again!!

HaHaVeryBunny · 14/12/2020 17:45

Yeah, l use podcasts or a bit of music when l'm doing the cleaning, thanks for the bicarbonate soda and oils tip. The shake and vac style ones can be too overpowering sometimes.

marthastew · 14/12/2020 17:48

I have a lovely Japanese style apron from Muji that I put on. It has big pockets for sprays and cloths.

Also, good music!

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 14/12/2020 17:49

MrsA and Biscuit good idea.
Disclaimer here, I'm also looking for gifts to give too.
My sisters cleaner stopped working as a cleaner recently. She was brilliant- reliable, trustworthy and knew all her preferences.
DS has got diabetes and arthritis too, so I was thinking I could potentially make cleaning more enjoyable for her.
I'm getting a posh cleaning caddy, and I think I'll invest in some glass spray bottles too to make it feel fancier.
Can you gift an audiobook?

Ooh marthastew I love that idea!

I put olaplex in my hair, a face pack on and my teeth whitening gels in. Then I run a bubble bath when I've finished and have a pamper.

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 14/12/2020 18:00

Mmm commander I love that! I never get the chance to pamper my face - theres always 'so much else to do' so that's a great idea!

@HotButteredRumPaPumPum

I'm intrigued by this bicarb/essential oil wizardry. You can always tell when I've vacuumed because the flat smells like burned dust and hot plastic.

Roughly what quantity of oils do you add to the bicarb? And do the oils not make the bicarb powder all clumpy and stodgy? And can you sprinkle it on hard floors too? (We only have carpet in the bedrooms, everywhere else is wood or tiles.)

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 16/12/2020 00:25

@NastyBlouse I got the recipe from theprariehomestead.com.
It does go slightly clumpy, but it still shakes fine. I drilled holes in a jam jar plastic lid. Theres no reason why you cant use it on hard floor I suppose, unless it was polished parquet. The oils would strip the varnish off it. It also makes the hoover smell great afterwards anyway so even if you used it just on the carpets, youd still get the nice smells belching out the hoover while you're doing the hard floors. And you can always swap out other oils too. Lemon and other citrus oils are good at cutting through grease and deodorising, as well as being antibacterial.

Lemon Carpet Refresher

1 cup baking soda

30 drops lemon essential oil

Combine in a small container, and cover tightly with a lid. Shake well and allow to sit for 6-8 hours. Sprinkle on stale or smelly carpet and allow to sit on it overnight. Vacuum up the next morning.

Persuade some bugger else to do it.

RugsEverywhere · 16/12/2020 09:37

Instead of the bicarb I just sprinkle a couple of drops of essential oil on the hoover bag ( or on a bit of cotton wool in the cannister if bagless)

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 16/12/2020 15:37

@RugsEverywhere that's a good idea. What's your favourite oil?

I've bought some Monoi de Tahiti oil to use as a hair mask and a bamboo cuddledry hair towel Xmas Grin

Watching with extreme interest! For Christmas (I asked for it) I got a Roomba vacuum for our large kitchen. I’ve had one previously and it did great on floors, not worth it on carpet to be honest. I feel like it’s a mini maid keeping our floors swept and feels quite luxurious!

Me too, although mine is baby pink chicken feathers. It's very long - for getting spider's webs off the ceilings, etc. It's the campest thing ever. I also love wearing a original 50s apron, for even more camp.
