Tell me pros and cons, please!

OP posts:

mine weighs 99kg, so no. I can understand the attraction though.

itbemay1 · 06/11/2020 09:12

No but I would have it in the bathroom if I could

KaleKitchen · 06/11/2020 09:42

I don't but wish I did! I have done in previous houses. Bedding, clothes, towels, it all goes upstairs, and has to be carried down to wash - what's not to love about an upstairs washing machine!

Chottie · 07/11/2020 13:22

My DS has her washing machine in the main bathroom. It lives in a purpose built cupboard, together with a permanent drying rack. She loves it. The only time she had a problem was when the machine leaked and the water went through the kitchen ceiling.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 07/11/2020 13:28

I used to! It was in a cupboard next to the bathroom. It was great. Now it's in the basement and my bathroom is two floors up and I seem to spend my life lugging washing up and down stairs.

AuntyPonsonby · 07/11/2020 13:35

We used to -washer and dryer stacked in a cupboard. It certainly makes more sense having them in the bathroom than in the kitchen. Laundry and food preparation do not seem to be related functions in my mind Grin

Also if you sit around in your kitchen it's nice not to have the noise of washers and dryers going.

I would rather carry a basket of dry dirty laundry down my stairs than a basket of clean wet laundry to hang out on the line.
cheeseychovolate · 08/11/2020 20:13

I know someone who had a utility room upstairs, really good idea as you won't have to carry washing up and downstairs.

Takeittotheboss · 08/11/2020 20:29

Yes. Wouldn't have it anywhere else. In cupboard in bathroom with boiler and in-built drying rack above, plus dirty laundry basket next to it and all powders/tablets beside it. No bother to carry stuff sometimes to line outside, but far easier to deal with dirty stuff direct to washer and clean stuff from rack to individual bedrooms. Also, when I've needed a new machine, delivery guys always carry new one upstair and fit and take old one away. No bother!

FippertyGibbett · 08/11/2020 20:30

No.

You would have to carry heavy wet washing downstairs to line dry it though? Or do you tumble dry all your laundry or only dry it in the house @cheeseychovolate and @Takeittotheboss?

EasilyDepleted · 08/11/2020 21:34

No, as a PP said I'd rather have it by the back door so I only have to carry heavy wet loads a few metres out to the washing line, I wouldn't want to have to cart it all down the stairs and through the house.

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 08/11/2020 21:40

We do - we have it in the box room along with all the various camping kit, sporting gear and whatnot. Fortunately plumbs through the wall easily into the bathroom piping.

It's brilliant. Such a waste of space having it take up a kitchen unit, quieter, and closer to the (human) dirty-clothing generators!

HerNameIsIncontinentiaButtocks · 08/11/2020 21:41

We do have to carry wet washing down if it's going on the line, but it's light when you're carrying it upstairs back - which is what we'd have to do to put it away from the kitchen so it's no worse.

Echobelly · 08/11/2020 21:45

Yes, we moved the bathroom door back to its original position and reclaimed part of the bathroom as a 'laundry cupboard'. Absolutely love it! Nice to have it not taking up kitchen space, makes it easy to push laundry on, and to hang it up indoors in winter. Distance to garden not an issue.

Cons are if it leaks it can cause some damage but at some point we will put a proper floor under it (it's sort of sitting on an oilcloth so far which has been OK for one or two slight leaks), but can't think of many others.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 08/11/2020 21:49

I would LOVE this! If we ever get round to an extension at home I'll ge doing this 👍🏻

Avondklok · 08/11/2020 22:03

We used to have a laundry room upstairs between the bedrooms. I loved it. We had ironing board permanently set up and I could just shut the door. Nowadays wm etc is in the garage /cellar downstairs so instead of no stairs I have 2 flights! 😭

Jelly0naplate · 08/11/2020 23:16

We built a cupboard into the bathroom about 6 years ago which has the washer, a dryer above on a shelf that is vented out and another shelf above that for washing powder and loo roll - it's fab! I don't mind carrying out the wet laundry for a few months of the year to hang outside.

Kids in the bath and I sort the washing/drying and putting away, job done!

Xiaoxiong · 08/11/2020 23:27

Yes I have a utility room upstairs with a pulley maid on the ceiling.

Pipandmum · 09/11/2020 00:31

I did and it was great. I can't think of a single negative if you have the space - unless you like to line dry your clothes.

GiantKitten · 09/11/2020 05:13

I’ve had wm in the bathroom for over 30 years. The main drawback really is carrying heavy wet stuff downstairs but that’s only half the year.

Used to get the odd flood through the kitchen ceiling, but since they’ve been cold fill only that hasn’t happened (hot fill used to perish the rubber washer at the tap).

The dryer is in the same cupboard, mainly used for decreasing & it’s great having a nice clean bed nearby for folding.

Justpassingtime1 · 09/11/2020 08:15

No Our neighbours could not see the leak in theirs until it was too late.
Bad damage to ceiling etc
We had a really good machine that sprung a leak.
As we can keep it in the kitchen downstairs it means we have kept
it for several years as a small leak in the kitchen is of no consequence

Horehound · 09/11/2020 08:16

Yes I have an upstairs utility room.
you don't have to huomph washing up and down stairs all the time.
But the spin is so fast it vibrates the whole of the upstairs!

ivfbeenbusy · 09/11/2020 08:30

It really depends on whether you are the type to hang all your washing out to dry on the washing line or an avid tumble dryer user. If you use an external washing line then you may as well have it downstairs. If you use a tumble dryer for everything have it upstairs

Fuckityfucksake · 09/11/2020 08:50

No but I'd like to. I am getting a vented dryer delivered tomorrow and that's going upstairs.
I have nowhere to put it downstairs so it's going in the gym/ironing/general shit dump room.
