Beautiful bedding - please educate me

I want to have that kind of bedding that feels like you're lying on a cloud, luxurious and soft.

What kind of duvet do I need?
Where is best for bedding? What do I look for?

Please advise me, wise women!

It would probably be helpful to say what your budget is.

PantyhoseAndRoses · 03/11/2020 18:32

Yes, budget would be useful. I've got a brushed cotton duvet cover, which is really soft and warm in winter but I also get quite hot so use a summer fitted sheet for the mattress from John Lewis.
I also treated myself to a rather expensive 1000 thread count silk duvet cover which is lovely, BUT word of warning - it has also ruined any other bed sheets for me now, as it makes anything else feel like sleeping on newspaper Grin

doadeer · 03/11/2020 19:38

Oh sorry yes... I can spend whatever on the bedding, I don't have an upper limit budget.

For a duvet, my room is really warm all year round so I don't need something heavy. It's incredibly warm in summer and I sleep on top of the bed.

I've bought bedlinen from Dip&Doze and Soak&Sleep. I prefer the former, but it was more expensive. It's not a super-high thread count, but that means it's not too bad to iron. I iron all bed linen. While I much prefer my cotton sheets, I remember that it took a fraction of the time to iron polycotton bedlinen.

I try to avoid microfibres, polyester etc, but I have got the pretend down duvet and pillows from Soak&Sleep. If I were going to buy again, I might look at wool, but I do like what I have now. The duvet is a set of two. We've just put the winter one on and put away the summer one. Have tried the two buttoned together, but it is very, very warm.

I used to invest in 1000 thread count sheets, silk or wool and linen for the summer but in the last couple of years I found my winning combo:

bamboo sheets (summer)
simple Portuguese brushed cotton (winter)

fallfallfall · 04/11/2020 07:45

Another Portuguese fan here for that perfect cool crisp cotton.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 04/11/2020 07:50

John Lewis feather/down duvets.
Down is more expensive than feathers, but lighter weight and more luxurious.

RuthTopp · 04/11/2020 07:53

Could you name some Portuguese bed linen sites please ?

Oxyiz · 04/11/2020 07:53

I agree with a pp that brushed cotton is the most comfortable for duvets, and bamboo is cooling.

Weighted blankets are a revelation too - I have one on top of the soft brushed cotton duvet right now and the whole sensation is lovely.

DonLewis · 04/11/2020 07:56

I've bought 2 duvets from the Lancashire cotton mill company. British made, 100% cotton cover and like a cloud.

In terms of bedding, I only like cotton, but the higher the thread count, the more of a bugger to get crease free.

The kids love Jersey or brushed cotton for a super soft feeling though.

DonLewis · 04/11/2020 07:57

Sorry, it was lancashire textiles.

Mumdiva99 · 04/11/2020 08:01

I like a high thread count bottom sheet....never been as high as 1000. But you do have to iron them. Do you have a mattress topper? A feather one can be lovely for the sinking into bed feel.

CherryPavlova · 04/11/2020 08:02

The mattress is key rather than the duvet covers. Spending on a good mattress is a sound investment that does mean better sleep.
Look at the Vispring range.
Then a protective topper not necessarily hugely padded but can be. Needs to be pure cotton of high thread count and well fitted.
Good pillows are another essential.

Then a trip to White Company website to buy your lovely crisp bedding.
John Lewis do very reasonable duvets.

starsinyourpies · 04/11/2020 08:05

On your point about summer, I have a lovely 2 tog duvet for summer abs only change over to 4.5 tog in the winter. Game changer.

starsinyourpies · 04/11/2020 08:06

I also have a wool mattress topper which is v comfy.

DarlingCoffee · 05/11/2020 03:23

I’ve bought from Dusk recently and would recommend. Good value too.

Breastfeedingworries · 05/11/2020 03:37

I have zero care about creases ect so I go for the highest thread count. My friends know I won’t sleep on less than 400...
mine at home is 1000, pure heaven. Grin

custardbear · 05/11/2020 04:33

Duck down duvet
Firm mattress with a memory foam topper - think though, ours is think like the old telephone books, so like floating on a cloud but doesn't engulf your like a full memory foam mattress

Fungster · 05/11/2020 04:47

Agree it's not the duvet but the mattress. We have a sleep number bed with a memory foam topper. It's like sleeping on a cloud. We use high thread count cotton for summer and a brushed flannel for winter. Delightful.

Fungster · 05/11/2020 04:48

We bought the cotton sheets from www.Brooklinen.com

Makin79 · 06/11/2020 14:27

Maybe try a really good quality mattress topper like this one, www.visionlinens.com/hotel-pure-luxury-synthetic-deep-fill-mattress-topper
and they also have some amazing duvets, www.visionlinens.com/hotel-pure-luxury-goose-down-duvet

I know that they supply John Lewis so the quality is fantastic

doadeer · 06/11/2020 18:23

Is it worth splashing out on 1000 thread count or will 300+ feel lovely too?

I have an eve mattress but I've bought a topper thank you!

I've just bought some 600tc from next and it's lovely, don't know how it will wear but it wasn't too expensive.
