Getting rid of one item a day thread number 14 – where we extract precious autumn leaves, rocks and twigs from our children

Well I never thought I’d still be here, on the 14th thread where a bunch of mumsnetters get rid of one item a day while we slowly declutter and reorganise our houses.

It’s autumn and some of us have commented on our children’s beloved treasures that are coming in like conkers and precious twigs that have been named. This is the thread where we focus on sneaking these things out and getting the house ready for Christmas even if we don’t know what Christmas will be like this year.

New joiners are always welcome, just get rid of one item and let us know. We’ve all different issues and challenges and it’s nice to have a friendly chat with a fellow mumsnetter.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

Speaking of threadbare jeans, the ones I’m currently wearing I think I will have to say goodbye to tomorrow, they’re getting to the point where they’re more holes than jeans, they were my favourites but they’ve definitely come to the end of their life!

DS has had a growth spurt so have decluttered a few of his clothes into a charity bag. Listed the Final pushchair on a Facebook selling group but no interest So far so not sure what to do with it, it needs to go but it’s too nice to tip! Picked DD up from school yesterday and her dad had sent her in wearing a dress which was clearly too short, looked at the label and it’s aged 4-5. She may be small for her age but she’s 7! So that can go as well. Why can men not see that clothes are too small? He’d sent DS to pre-school in a t shirt that looked like a crop top the other day Hmm

In other news, I went to get something out of my medicine box the other day and was struck by how very small and minimal it is. Before I moved I had a great big lockable medicine box full of all sorts which I left at exes house and my new medicine box is tiny and only has absolute essentials in so I’m seeing that as a win that I hadn’t even noticed at the time.

My DH is the same on not seeing clothes that are too small. His personal best is dressing DD in a t-shirt aged 6-9 months when she was almost 2. He did think it didn't cover her tummy very well, apparently.

I thought I was keeping up with the thread but had missed that a new one had started! Have been finding everything a bit much recently so have been doing the minimum to keep the house vaguely presentable and not really decluttering at all!

Still storing about 6 bags for the charity shop but our local toy bank is starting their Christmas collection early in November so may be able to get a few things out to them. Last year they stopped collecting early so need to get sorted!

I'm off work for a week now so hoping to get a few things sorted and especially some kind of rationalisation of the toys ahead of Christmas and DD's birthday. I think all the restrictions this year will probably mean a lot fewer gifts which is no bad thing!

Also out, a pair of toddler wellies with holes in. I have no idea how he managed that. And will be sneaking out a pair of DD's leggings that also have holes.

Hope everyone is keeping well.

Welcome StrangeAddiction. You sound busy, I hope you get better quickly. (And start shouting at your helpers, they should be looking after you.)

Not much decluttering done here. I spotted some of the free glass ramekins you get with gu deserts so they’re going in the charity shop pile but they’ve only been there a few days so it doesn’t really feel like a win but I suppose it’s better than keeping them ‘just in case’ and ending up with 20. I also went to the bottle bank but I only had about 3 jars to go and I always feel like everyday recycling doesn’t count.

After doing no decluttering for a few days I managed to get dd1's windowsill done today (this has been a dumping ground since we moved in over a year ago. It was the last opportunity to do it without her watching before half term so glad I got it done. I did however leave the 3 conkers I discovered from last year. I'm just as bad as the kids when it comes to hording those Blush

stealthninjamummy · 23/10/2020 14:10

STruggling to do anything here with dc around. I’ve turned on the old broken laptop and am intending to delete some old files and photos while we have a movie night later.

Someone has enquired about a very old toy I posted on Facebook ages ago so hopefully that will go but I’ve already counted that so the quest is on to find one item.

Not had a very successful decluttering week. Put DD's outgrown DMs for sale; someone came and tried them yesterday but they were no good. Someone asked way under price and if I'd post them. No.
Mainly just small items going. I did put some long life milk in supermarket food bank box-we acquired it from FIL and won't use it.

gassylady · 23/10/2020 15:32

Three outs today. Two boxed sets of table linen that my Nan had kept for best and then never used, such a waste. They went to a vintage shop. Third was an old towelling robe for the beach/swimming passed on for a friends daughter.

lljkk · 23/10/2020 15:37

Steady trickle of old paperwork (like 25 yrs old!!), some charity shop bags, and some Ebay sales all out in last few days. Pleased with that.

I decided to re-read the few novels I have & then take them to charity shops. DC have never trawled my shelves to find anything to read (like I did to my parents' bookshelves). Time to let go.

pollyannaperspective · 23/10/2020 16:16

Decided today was the day to deep clean the kitchen fridge freezer.
Outs - 17, mainly well past even 'throw in to soup' bits from the salad drawer, desiccated ends of loaves and some near finished tubs of ice cream that our student DC eat but they will not be back for some time, possibly not even Christmas.
I have organised the freezer and can meal plan for the next week. Home made suppers with minimal effort.
For those on half term - enjoy your family time.

Thanks @stealthninjamummy. DS went off to university in another country and stayed there to work. Good job because he'd have nowhere to sleep! A lot of the clutter is his old stuff.

DH arriving this evening and will be handed the vacuum cleaner, or rather I'll point a limp hand towards it! Have an appointment for local authority to pick up old shelves and rubbish from the attic but I need help to carry them down.

When i get frustrated I remind myself just how much I've got rid of already.

TheyAreMinerals · 23/10/2020 16:38

Did manage to make minestrone with odds of vegetables from the fridge and feeling virtuous!

PickledLilly · 23/10/2020 16:48

Out today: in the bin, a pair of knackered kids trainers that are too small (sadly too well used for charity) and a broken coat hanger, in the charity bag, a pair of boys trousers that are too small.

stealthninjamummy · 23/10/2020 17:18

theyareminerals it’s great to reflect on how well you’ve done and just get dh to do anything heavy now.

I hung a painting today that has been sitting around for about three years partly inspired by my newly organised tool store in the utility room. It only took a few minutes now that I’ve sorted out all our nails and screws and stuff. I have a few other paintings that I might put up, I’m pretty sure I got one framed about 12 years ago, and it’s just sitting in the Room of Doom.

I also went through pe kits and found two small skorts to recycle. Tonight’s dinner is going to consist of leftovers from the freezer.

No outs here today, more ins instead 🙈 Bought 4 nice jumpers on FB for £4, so will clear out my wardrobe to make space. Our half term is just starting so don't know how much I'll manage to get done!

footprintsintheslow · 23/10/2020 19:02

Day 35: not much going on as I was at a wedding but I did clear my email inbox and use up a body lotion so recycled that which I'm thrilled at as it's been hanging about for years.

Exmlm · 23/10/2020 20:07

Finished a face cream today a mini decleor one that was a freebie.

Tried to go to the top but ours also you need to pre book a week in advance so I think I need to collect a bit more stuff to get rid of.

Exmlm · 23/10/2020 20:07

that will be tip!

Miaowse · 23/10/2020 21:44

I haven’t posted in a while. I’m continuing to do quite well using up random stuff from my kitchen & bathroom cupboards but nothing more exciting than that. I’m so tired at the minute and just can’t seem to get motivated.

Ideally I should take stuff to the charity shop and dump over the weekend, but my car is misbehaving so I’ll probably postpone until the car is fixed (which will no doubt declutter a fair chunk of my bank balance...)

An empty paint tub out today. It's been in the corner of my room for a loooong while but it kind of became invisible but I spotted it today and made sure it's out of the house...ok it's sitting outside in the garden along with a few other things breast for the tip on Sunday, but at least it's out!

StrangeAddiction · 23/10/2020 23:38

Breast?! Ready! Ready for the tipGrin

It’s rainy and horrid, the children are at their dad’s. I really should do something productive instead of sitting under a blanket browsing Mumsnet and watching cat videos.

Some expired medication in a bag ready to go to the nearest chemist. One drawer in the old bathroom unit cleared, 3 to go. Slightly distracted by the now urgent need to sort dc bedroom as they have just learnt to climb out of their cot....Sad

stealthninjamummy · 24/10/2020 14:43

snap! pickledliy I’m not watching cat videos but I am curled up Mumsnetting still undressed. Ex has done no childcare this week - even today they’re with me - so I feel knackered. I think the only decluttering I will do will be old freezer food.
