Getting rid of one item a day thread number 14 – where we extract precious autumn leaves, rocks and twigs from our children

Well I never thought I’d still be here, on the 14th thread where a bunch of mumsnetters get rid of one item a day while we slowly declutter and reorganise our houses.

It’s autumn and some of us have commented on our children’s beloved treasures that are coming in like conkers and precious twigs that have been named. This is the thread where we focus on sneaking these things out and getting the house ready for Christmas even if we don’t know what Christmas will be like this year.

New joiners are always welcome, just get rid of one item and let us know. We’ve all different issues and challenges and it’s nice to have a friendly chat with a fellow mumsnetter.

Previous thread here.

And for 2020 some of us are also aiming to get rid of 2020 items!

What a wet miserable day it's been here. Instead of taking a trip to the shops to get rid of some online returns, I started on my mountain of clutter in the conservatory. Not a major amount of progress, but I can see some clear floor. Biggest out today was part of a cutlery tray (I replaced our old, v badly fitting one last week) plus a number of small bits and pieces.

I plan on doing the returns tomorrow plus I have a large cardboard box hanging around the kitchen from the new cutlery tray which I have been meaning to recycle - it's now going to school with DS2 for a topic day they are doing next term.

gassylady our local tip has now moved to pre-booked appts only, as since it reopened in the summer it has been impossible to get near without a wait of at least an hour, sometimes two and it was causing traffic chaos due to the location. Pre-covid I could be in and out in 10 mins. I haven't been and had so much stuff to that needed to go that I invested in a hippobag which I am quite happily filling

Thanks for birthday wishes! I love the idea of some of my hair being an out Grin

I did actually have one proper out today, some colouring sheets that I sold.

However, DH went to the shop for birthday bits & came back with the exact thing I told him we already had & therefore didn't need (bathroom mould spray) Hmm So now I have to take it back, although as he paid for it on his card, I will probably be lucky to get credit on a gift card for it, let alone money back. He often does this & it really annoys me! And is why I prefer to do the shopping myself.

I threw away some old receipts from my wallet phone case, so that'll be less bulky, came across a gift card for coffee too, so I'll use that soon. Not much else going out. I did get some storage containers for the junk drawer and utensil drawer that I'll get around to sorting soon. It's all getting out of control.
Happy birthday confused I hope you enjoy your day.

Chottie · 22/10/2020 06:56

Hello and signing in :)

I took 20 items of clothes to the charity shop and also a large outside lantern which was an unwanted gift (about 5 years ago!).

I plan to continue sorting out my clothes and shoes.

So satisfying.

Congrats on the baby!

Today’s out so far:

Slippers - ds’ slippers. He’s outgrown them and they’re a bit battered.

pollyannaperspective · 22/10/2020 10:10

Today's out - one pair of jeans (mine) worn until threadbare.
Aim for the day is to declutter my e-mails following major work meeting yesterday, so best to stop my procrastinating here!

TheyAreMinerals · 22/10/2020 10:39

I'm back. Congratulations to everyone on your progress.

I'm stalled with decluttering at the moment because I've put my back out. I did manage to get rid of a few small things on FB, but living room, DS's room and attic all stacked full of stuff to be put away/taken to container park/listed on FB. Trying not to get discouraged.

Watched a bit of the Netflix Marie Kondo series. Makes me feel better to know that other people have much more crap than i do!

Good luck everyone!

ememem84 · 22/10/2020 11:01

am logged into a zoom conference and am listening to it while i do some work and some decluttering.

aside from the above slippers i;ve now ditched:

  • a small take away sauce pot,
  • a random lid;
  • empty envelopes from post;
  • have tidied the post away;
  • decanted some bath salts into their jar so ditched the bag they came in;
  • birthday present from aunt and uncle - a bottle light which is just not me so that's going to charity;
MrsTidyHouse · 22/10/2020 11:15

LOs and I had a shoe session the other day. Both children very helpful and co-operative. Two pairs of scruffy trainers in the bin, two pairs of good shoes for donation.

Rather ashamed of having to throw out about a dozen mouldy cherry tomatoes.

In general, we are calmer and happier.

wondering7777 · 22/10/2020 11:38

I love it when you can throw something out in the genuine knowledge that you’ve 100% got your money’s worth and it’s completely reached the end of its life due to so much use.

ememem84 · 22/10/2020 11:43

have also just empties half boxes of paracetamol and ibuprofen and made two "full" boxes. which clears up space in bathroom cabinet.

also the same with plasters and cotton buds.

confusedofengland · 22/10/2020 12:52

I also love wearing clothes until they're threadbare! It's great to think you have got your money's worth. Anything that can here then goes into the ragbag, too.

A couple of outs so far today - a toy sold & a Roses tub full of coppers & 5ps (from ILs) paid into the bank for the DC. Also a fair few ins as birthday pressies (mainly food related though) & stocking fillers for DC. Plus a lovely soft jumper dress for me from Tesco, paid for partly with the refund from the mould spray DH erroneously bought.

stealthninjamummy · 22/10/2020 13:12

Welcome chottie that’s an awesome start.

theyareninerals sending hugs. I’m sorry to hear about your back. The decluttering can wait til you’re better - or can you get your ds to help?

No outs for me so far as it’s half term and I don’t really have time. I finished tidying my tops drawer last night and I have about 30 but they’re all in good condition, fit me and go with my bottoms so I don’t see any point in getting rid of them just to declutter something. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how many nice clothes I have now that I can see them.

Hi all, I hope you don't mind me joining in!

I haven't been well this week and the house is like a bomb site. Plenty of able helpers but no one ever wants to help Hmm

I'm getting new carpets and Lino at the beginning of November and then hopefully my new settee will be delivered a few days later so I essentially want a completely blank canvas in those rooms.

Lots to do over the next few weeks to achieve that with a few tip runs to get rid of the sitting room laminate that's currently down and some other crap that I'll no doubt find lurking under the stairs!

I still feel under the weather so I'll start small today by taking out the recycling and maybe dropping in a bag I've got in the car for the charity shop.

Yesterday's outs were:

Cat food and milk
Blankets
Carpet treads

They went to a local animal rescue so I know they'll be useful to someone else.

ememem84 · 22/10/2020 15:59

have taken boxes of tea out of the cupboard and have put them in the fancy tea box we have. so that clears space in the cupboard.

same with the earl grey.

ememem84 · 22/10/2020 18:35

Two more outs. A pair of dds leggings which she’s shuffled through (again)

And a longline vest of mine which I wear when running. I went to pull it down and put my nail through it. Sigh.

ememem84 · 22/10/2020 18:43

And another hand cream.

SingToTheSky · 22/10/2020 19:34

Got rid of a few bits of clothing - stuff the toddler has outgrown that can’t be passed on. I’ve bought next size up stuff for her and DS but need to weed their current things before adding it!

footprintsintheslow · 22/10/2020 20:53

Day 34:

Struggling a bit to find anything then remembered I can always do my daily email delete.

Also I've washed off the labels from 6 jars ready to go in the shed for storing dried food etc. So an out from the kitchen window sill. Why do some companies use sticky stuff that just doesn't come off and others come off with no effort at all?!

ememem84 · 22/10/2020 21:10

@footprintsintheslow wd40 will get it off apparently.

Weneedmusicandtheatre · 22/10/2020 21:11

Back from a few days away (I feel like a massive weight has lifted). Obviously minimalist cottage (especially with all soft furnishings etc moved). Felt good. We will never get to that point but pointed out to DH when he raised it how much worse we would have felt coming back if we hadn’t got rid of all that stuff last week. Back to the declutter job tomorrow.

WhenDoISleep · 22/10/2020 21:48

Large box went to school with DS2 for topic related craft after half term; two lots of online returns taken back to the shops for a refund.

Not much progress otherwise; plan for tomorrow is to sort some more of the conservatory dumping ground.

StrangeAddiction · 22/10/2020 22:15

I didn't get to the charity shop today and apart from the normal recycling and bag of general waste I didn't manage any other outs until I clocked all the toiletries bottles on the shower floor - 4 empty bottles out.

Tip run booked for Sunday tea time.
