New mattress. Where to start? Recommendations.

Our current mattress is sooooo uncomfortable. New one in the cards but we’ve no idea where to begin! Or roughly how much we should be spending-don’t want to get ripped off. Recently stayed in a Premier Inn & loved the Hypnos mattress. Does anyone have one? Are they a good long term purchase?

The only thing I’m fairly confident about is that we don’t want memory foam type ones.

Grateful in advance for your advice!

Where to start?

Budget.

We’ve just done the mattress hunt , started off being convinced I wanted a Simba after rave reviews on here , ended up with an I-gel from Bensons it was amazing to lie on !

We bought an Emma hybrid mattress this summer and it’s wonderful supportive and extremely comfortable - at the time it was retailing for just under £800 but we got it for half price with a teacher discount. It is a sprung / memory foam combo - in the very hot weather we had it was a tiny bit hot but we bought a cooling topper from sleep and soak which solved this.

I have an Emma and it’s very comfy

Coriandersucks · 08/10/2020 07:04

We went to the shop where you lie on a bed and they tell you your ideal mattress firmness based on your sleeping ha it’s - think it was dreams.

It was a great starting point as we really didn’t have a clue so we made a purchase feeling a bit more educated. Just because lots of people say one type of mattress is good it doesn’t mean it’s good for you.

RidingMyBike · 08/10/2020 07:09

We went to various bed shops and tried loads. Found John Lewis the most helpful in terms of information available about each mattress and we bought a firm wool/cotton one from there so have a side for hot weather and one for cold. It's lovely to sleep on and still going strong over five years later (it's such a good mattress DD was born nine months after its arrival Confused)

Thank you all (esp Oneandzero 🙄)

We’re such novices we don’t even know what’s a reasonable amount to spend so good to get your recommendations. I’m also v reluctant at the moment to be hopping between shops trying out different types of mattress so I really appreciate those of you who have done so sharing your experiences.

I bought an IKEA Hovag as an ‘in between’ mattress while I chose my permanent one. Well it’s so comfy I’m sticking with it!

Dp is 6ft8 and I’m 5ft4 and we both get a fab nights sleep on it. I would definitely repurchase if I ever needed to. And it’s so so cheap, genuinely love it.

Mattress range from £80 to over £8000. So what’s the point if posters wasting time recommending brands that worked for their budget would not yours?

Emma hybrid I returned as unimpressed

REM.... amazing

maldivemoment · 08/10/2020 07:18

TeddyIsaHe wouldn’t even have thought of Ikea! Top tip! Thanks

Hi and try them - research your preferences

We chose a very firm orthopaedic mattress and bought a really deep mattress topper in memory foam but bamboo treated cover which helps remove the hot/sweat problem

I absolutely LOVE our bed these days - but we went to a few shops to see what was nice

I assumed I'd have a memory foam but got a hybrid in the end as memory foam felt too restrictive

thesoundofthepolice · 08/10/2020 07:47

Another vote for the hovag ikea mattress. I bought it for occasional use in our spare room and it's so comfortable I'm replacing all our mattresses with them when I can.

I hope I’m not wasting anyone’s time. Folk can read then move on. No obligation to reply. Thanks to those of you that have. It’s really helpful.

Thank you Oneandzero for explaining the range in price. Good to have a starting point. Our budget in anywhere in between the range you suggested! 🙄😆

If you want firm, waterlattex mattresses are decent value for what you get. They don't have springs they are small pockets of air, they arrive rolled up, you unroll once. They have a winter and summer side.

We have had our 11 years and still not a dent in it.

Will happily replace with another waterlattex when we need to.

minipie · 09/10/2020 14:02

I’d recommend John Ryan if budget allows. They have quite a range price wise. Proper traditional sprung mattresses not memory foam or hybrid. They will advise on what’s best for you and crucially they do a 60 day try and return, no return fees or anything, so you can sleep on the mattress for 2 months and see if it suits.

From my research it seemed like the “mattress in a box” like Emma and Simba get good reviews for the first 6 months and then go downhill after that.

maldivemoment · 09/10/2020 16:38

Thanks everyone.

minipie those John Ryan ones look AMAZING! Do you mind me asking if you have one?

minipie · 09/10/2020 19:16

Yes we do and very happy with it!

grownags · 11/10/2020 19:13

Omg wish I'd seen this before today!!
We went to John Lewis for a new bed and mattress ours is 20 years old 😳
We had no idea re a budget to be honest but were happy to shell out a bit for something nice.
Ended up spending 3500 for vi sprung mattress divan and headboard
Now reading above wondering if we have been completely mad ( we had some savings from not doing anything at all this year in lockdown)
It's got a 30 year guarantee so I expect this is it bedwise fir ya we'll never buy another!!!!

bouncydog · 12/10/2020 08:26

Have a look at the info on the John Ryan site in relation to user size/weight. A 17 stone person will need a different tension mattress to somebody of 8 stone! We have always shelled out for zip and link mattresses so we can have our preferred level of comfort. Also no dipping in the middle due to weight differential. Our latest purchase is a Hypnos - firm his side and medium mine. Really comfortable. Cost around 2,500 I think but worth every penny.

FatimaMunchy · 12/10/2020 08:34

Dreams (with the bed you lie on to find the type of mattress you need) is a con in my opinion. We went straight after lockdown and they only let us try three, and the one we bought was great in the shop, but only ok at home. Yes you can return it after X days, but for 'an upgrade '. The salesman was definitely good at his job but I would go elsewhere.

JayeAshe · 12/10/2020 08:49

We bought a Hypnos bed after sleeping on one , as you did, in an hotel. Never regretted the expense and have recommended the brand to others.

Laffinalltheway · 14/10/2020 13:26

Go to the Premier Inn website and you can order Hypnos mattresses through them and they're much cheaper than anywhere else. There was a link on here somewhere but can't find it. But just go to the PI website and it's there. We got one through PI and don't regret it one bit.
