Would you wash a duvet?

It's king size but our thin 4.5 tog one. We have a normal washing machine that it would be pretty well stuffed in.

What do you think?

Yes, I do this fairly often with our 4.5 tog in the summer months

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 18/09/2020 08:43

Yes why not, as long as you can get it dry.

If you think it's too heavy for your line, you can position a few chairs outside and make a fort with it.

notacooldad · 18/09/2020 08:43

I take ours to the laundrette where they have large machines for duvets.

KihoBebiluPute · 18/09/2020 08:44

not a kingsize in a domestic washing machine. we have done a single at home and it was ok (only if its manmade fiber filling obviously). for kingsize I would take it to a laundrette where they have bigger machines.

ivfbeenbusy · 18/09/2020 08:47

Yes used to do it all the time with the ones that fitted in the washing machine

Ooo I've not had a fort in my garden for years... what lovely memories that's brought back x

I take single duvets to the launderette for their big machines and our king size to the dry cleaner for their really enormous machine.

I have washed pillows at home though.

Krook · 18/09/2020 09:35

I've washed a 4 tog superking in our machine but I think it's a bigger than normal drum. 7kg? It is packed in but seems to do the job.

BammBamm · 18/09/2020 09:51

@KihoBebiluPute why can you not wash feather/down quilts? I've always done DDs single in our machine and it seems fine Confused

WildCherryBlossom · 18/09/2020 10:05

Of course you can wash feather and down. All our duvets & pillows are down. They just take quite a while to dry and need to be dried very thoroughly. To dry a single properly I have to feed the launderette tumble dryer approx £5 and set it to hot.

Yankathebear · 18/09/2020 10:09

What do you usually do op?
Mine always goes in the machine.

BammBamm · 18/09/2020 10:20

@WildCherryBlossom glad it's not just me then. It dries fine in our dryer with plenty of dryer balls although it does take a while!

redgin · 18/09/2020 10:47

I usually take them to the launderette but this one is quite new and thinner than those so wondered about washing myself.

My machine 7kg max won't take our 4.5 tog kingsize duvet. It fits in when dry just but once it gets wet the weight unbalances the machine and it won't spin.

My machine does seem to have an oddly small drum, though.

I take mine to the cleaner, they do a good job and it costs about £10.

Scarby9 · 18/09/2020 11:02

I took my massive 17 tog double to the laundrette in April. It was only in January when we had a cold snap that I wondered where it was and remembered.
I thought the laundrette would have long since sold it or given it away but no, they handed over the massive bag which they must have been falling over for 9 months.

Nanasueathome · 18/09/2020 11:07

May be better using a larger machine at the launderette as, if the duvet is stuffed into your washer, it may not be able to swish around to get clean

cctvrec · 18/09/2020 11:12

I never thought I could wash a duvet without it resulting in damage. Does the polyester filling not bunch up etc like if you wash a teddy bear and the filling goes awful? Or do you guys have fancier duvets than my Ikea ones so it's not an issue? Does a tumble dryer not damage them as well or am I looking at a 2 day radiator/washing line effort getting it dry?

Mine is clean looking but smells a bit where I sweat though the duvet cover and I've just been replacing them. We have a laundrette nearby with an 18kg drum for £8 so I'd love to head off and do it.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 18/09/2020 11:12

yes..I can get my superking 4.5 tog in my machine, but it does have a massive drum, I do have to give it a good shove in though. Also have to use the "large item" setting, and then respin separately (on highest) as that setting only goes up to 1000

When the children were small I only bought 4,5 tog duvets, and layered them into the covers so that I could get them in the wash individually if required.

MrsPnut · 18/09/2020 11:16

We have king size feather duvets and washed DD1's at the laundrette last week. We used their huge jumbo washing machine for £8.50 and then dried it for £5 and it was back on her bed that night.

I went after dinner as well to wash it, was there about 1hr 20m with my book and some peace and quiet.

zippityzip · 18/09/2020 11:17

Honestly. I've just bought new duvets. I was never told that they could be washed and now I'm so ashamed that I got to adulthood not knowing this.

My electricity bill will be extortionate but I'm determined to wash all my duvets this weekend.

cctvrec · 18/09/2020 11:17

Hang on a mo! Why did I never look at the new duvet labels? I just took it they were like my old ones which were disasters when laundered.

::facepalm::

Would you wash a duvet?
BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/09/2020 11:20

Yes, (I've a 10kg washing machine & the same size tumble dryer), I wash all our duvets (ours is king size) 4 times a year.

GiantKitten · 18/09/2020 11:22

They won’t be thoroughly washed anyway if they’re stuffed in really tightly.

Even the bigger laundrette machines aren't really big enough, but I discovered that our laundrette does a service wash for duvets, in extra large machines, in the back.

It cost £11-12 all-in and the duvet was beautifully clean and thoroughly dry. (It was only a double, but a very thick 13.5 tog which had got damp stains in storage - I soaked it in the bath for ages first to get the worst of it out)

EBearhug · 18/09/2020 11:25

I've done my summer king-size one in the machine, then put it across the top of the rotary dryer in the garden, so it was more or less lying flat. My winter one won't fit, though so that needs to be taken away for cleaning.

redgin · 18/09/2020 12:41

Thought id update...

It's washed beautifully on a gentle wash, although I did need an extra spin.. currently drying on the line
