Vacuum cleaners- what do/don't you recommend and why?

Yes, I know there are other threads which I have looked at, but they are very varied for and against a dyson, for miele/sebo, for a stick vs corded etc. Do you or don't you like about your vacuum to help me narrow down my choice please.

This thread is a bit old now, so if you have landed here looking for recommendations, we recently updated our best vacuum cleaner buyers guide, featuring the best cordless, cylinder and upright vacuums, tried and tested by Mumsnet.

We hope you find this useful.

I had a Henry, great for hard floors or low pike carpet but not good if you've got thick carpet and a dog. Bought a shark corded and was absolutely disgusted at Henry's workshy attitude when the Shark did one round of upstairs - incidentally where the dog does not go....... if I could have wiped that smug grin off his face I would have done!!

hanahsaunt · 10/08/2020 15:56

We have had our Shark pet cordless twin battery vacuum for three months now and it is just a dream! Life without a cord is amazing though the headlamps are relentless at showing up all the dust. We have a 5-bed house with both hard wood and carpet flooring - the Shark can toggle between the two settings so very easy. It seems to lift a phenomenal amount of stuff. Way better than the Dyson it replaced (not going there again).

Grinchlywords · 10/08/2020 16:06

Hated the Henry. Had a very old Dyson that worked brilliantly but the newer models I understand are rubbish. And I've gone off James Dyson recently.

I now have a Miele Animal and love it.

EndofmyWeightTether · 10/08/2020 16:07

We’ve just bought an AEG cordless hoover and it’s changed our lives!

Dyson are shite! Heavy, clunky, bits breaking all the time.

Potionqueen · 10/08/2020 16:59

We have 2 sharks, a cordless flexible and a corded liftaway. Both are brilliant.

Paddingtonthebear · 10/08/2020 17:36

Very nearly bought a Shark liftaway until someone I know (who works for Currys) told me that they get more Shark vacuums returned than any other product

Cynderella · 10/08/2020 18:31

We've had Miele C3s (well built but bags expensive and inconvenient to move around), Dysons (great when new but then pretty average) and now on Shark - best we've ever had.

I like bagless because I empty it after every use and it's clean for next time. Wish the canister was bigger, but that's only when I'm doing a lot in one go. I also like the lift off feature so that I can go right under the bed from one side and do the stairs easily.

Elouera · 10/08/2020 20:22

Some good points thanks. I only mentioned the henry is 8kg, because my dead dyson cylinder is only 5kg, which I thought was heavy to drag around! Its only a flat and all floor boards except the bedrooms are carpetted in a low file. No dogs, but my long hair gets everywhere, hence wondered if the pet henry, or the hair cutting shark might be good options?

I hate Henrys - they are very difficult to control and knock into everything, though they do have amazing suction, which makes it hard work pushing them. I know Sebo gets a really good write up, but I find they are very unbalanced on stairs and frequently tip over. I like the old Dysons and the new cordless.

isadorapolly · 10/08/2020 21:43

I have a cordless shark and it’s amazing. I’ve had Henry’s, dysons, the lot, nine compare to this!

faelavie · 10/08/2020 22:36

Charles. Like Henry but it can vacuum up water too. Defintely one of the best things I've bought for the home.

Hated Dyson, my mum's one fell apart, just felt so cheap and shoddy. Plus James Dyson is a wanker so I personally don't want to give him my money.

toomanyplants · 10/08/2020 22:42

Was an avid Dyson fan, then changed to shark, basic corded model.
I love it, love the headlights, easy lift away, if anything it's a bit too powerful and takes a load of effort on deep bedroom carpets.

userxx · 10/08/2020 22:47

Henry did my back no good at all, far too heavy. I bought a vax steerable and I love it.

jitterbugintomybrain · 10/08/2020 22:49

Hated Dyson. Love the Shark I now have.

MsWoodentop · 10/08/2020 22:58

Have a Sebo and a Shark. Hate the Shark, love the Sebo. Shark is manoeuvrable, but that's it's only positive; the dirt container is small, needs emptying all the time, cloud of dust and muck when you empty it, washing the filter is rank, and the dust container stays permanently dirty.

The Sebo is solid, sturdy, has fantastic suction, bags that dont need changing for ages, comes with sealable bags which are perfectly clean to dispose of.

TalkingOutOfMyBottom · 10/08/2020 23:05

8kg is about the size of a newborn baby.. @Aroundtheworldin80moves Grin. If I'd had a baby that big I wouldn't be up for the hoovering. Do you mean pounds?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/08/2020 09:31

I had a Shark Rocket - only saving grace was the massively long cord . It was bloody useless kept depositing a load of carpet debris after it was switched off , I had to hold it over a bin (still running) to allow it to drop in there .

Since we got two black cats and the fur meant very regular vacuuming, the Shark annoyed me more and more .

I have a Halo Capsual.
Codless
Stick vacuum so no long hoses .
Bagged so holds loads
Charge lasts a good while
So lightweight it feels like it won't work.....but it really does

astridforty · 12/08/2020 09:35

Shark 100%. First run of the Shark through a - very thoroughly Dyson vacuumed - house was incredible. Filled the container just downstairs. I bought the largest corded one because it was on offer, in hindsight we would have gone for one of the smaller models.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/08/2020 10:20

Gtech. It's light, good suction, kepps a decent charge.

I had one, then needed a new hoover so on recommendations from here bought a shark. I hated it, so top heavy and hard to pull along the floor. I sent it back and bought a new Gtech.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/08/2020 10:25

I also had a Henry yeas ago but hated having to drag the thing around. I actually ones with a long stick and those really small heads. I think they are really awkward to work with.

Elouera · 12/08/2020 17:52

Thanks for all the replies. After much reviewing, I've ordered a Henry Xtra today. I'll report back with how it goes.

Dyson cordless ok for a quick run around. Shark for performance, the amount it picked up when i first used it after dyson was shocking. It heavier but much better

Roselilly36 · 12/08/2020 18:05

Shark cordless duo clean with anti hair wrap, is without doubt the best vacuum I have ever owned.

Franticbutterfly · 12/08/2020 18:15

Henry is the most versatile of all vacuum cleaners. He 100% gets my vote.

ChangeOfNameNeeded07 · 12/08/2020 18:50

We have a Henry and a Dyson. Use Dyson for stairs and a quick-around, but Henry comes out when I need proper job done. I find Miele very heavy.
