How to get away with not ironing bedding

SciFiScream · 03/08/2020 14:30

I don't iron bedding and I won't.

I'd like it to be less creased though. Grin

I don't have a tumble dryer but used to take bedding to a local laundrette for speed (15 mins for £1.50 and three entire bed sets dried in that time!). This helped in my crease free dream.

I've stopped doing that though as shut during the pandemic, not logistically sustainable and questionable in terms of being green with car journeys.

So are there any tips for how to wash and air dry (I have a whirligig) bedding to minimise creases?

I do an extra spin on machine to speed up drying time but perhaps I shouldn't spin at 1200? Top spin on my machine.

Eco friendly and lazy housekeeper ideas a bonus!

Just don’t iron it. I don’t iron anything at all, not even school uniform. Everything is folded off the line or out of the dryer.

BigRedBoat · 03/08/2020 14:36

Get a throw or bead spread so you don't have to look at the creases?

Feralkidsatthecampsite · 03/08/2020 14:37

Hang on the line with pegs as such the cover isn't over the line but hung by the corners.

AriettyHomily · 03/08/2020 14:39

Shake it out straight away, fold, smooth and then hang.

I don't iron anything.

altforvarmt · 03/08/2020 14:40

Take it out of the washing machine as soon as it's spun, then take the bedding by the corners and shake it out vigorously before hanging it up (admittedly, that's much easier if there's two of you).

I never iron bedding either. Life's too short.

TerfTerfTerf · 03/08/2020 14:40

I hang mine on a straight washing line (folded carefully over the line to make a straight crease), fold it properly as soon as it's dry, and keep in airing cupboard until needed. You can see the folds but the rest of it is pretty flat. And I love the smell of it when it's clean on (I use Ecover which smells of fresh air). Ironing makes bedding 'crisp' which I think is what everyone really likes, but I'll sacrifice crisp for time 😀

Put bedding on the bed then use a small spray bottle to lightly cover it with a thin layer of water. As it dries the wrinkles drop out

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/08/2020 14:41

I don't iron bedding. Fold it as soon as it comes off the line and stack it folded.

When it goes on the bed, smooth the duvet out and firmly tuck it in all the way around. Put the pillows on top. That should half the creases out.

Though it'll crease with use so to make life easier all round just learn to care less about it.

funnyoldonion · 03/08/2020 14:42

Buy French linen bedding that looks amazing creased!

BruceAndNosh · 03/08/2020 14:44

You need a helper.
Take bedding out of washer. Fold it lengthways with your helper, then you fold it several times more so that you have a very long narrow folded piece. Each hold your corners firmly and pull hard away from each other stretching the creases out.

pinkbalconyrailing · 03/08/2020 14:46

seersucker bedding.
fitted sheets and not giving a damn.
smoothing it out before hanging it up helps a lot though

Jujuball · 03/08/2020 14:48

Mix a bit of fabric conditioner with water in a spray bottle and spray it on when the bed is made, and pull the fabric in different directions as you go - works a treat Smile

GinWithRosie · 03/08/2020 14:51

As others have said OP...just don't 🤷‍♀️👍😂. I've never in my life ironed bedding (honestly didn't even know this was a thing to be fair 😱) Who sees it anyway? I actually couldn't give two tosses!

Catchme91 · 03/08/2020 14:54

Handheld steamer works wonders and a lot easier than ironing! I bought one off eBay for about 20-25 quid - make the bed as normal and then run it over for about 3-4 minutes! Perfect!

Shelby30 · 03/08/2020 14:55

I bought Lenore crease releaser. Took me months to finally find it. Folk had been raving about it online saying you spray and smooth down the fabric and it will remove creases. It doesn't! So don't bother with that but it does smell amazing lol.

LunaLoveFood · 03/08/2020 14:58

I've had the same problem and have found that turning down the spin cycle from 1200 to 600 and then take it straight out as soon as it stops and hang out to dry. It does take longer to dry but no creases.

SciFiScream · 03/08/2020 15:49

Don't worry I can't see myself ever ironing bedding! After all not using the iron is a good eco choice. GrinGrin

I will try a few of these electricity free suggestions and see if I end up with fewer creases.

By the time the fitted sheets are on the bed the creases tend to disappear so it's mainly for the duvet cover and pillowcases. I had thought about buying a bedspread as a PP suggested but I'm also being frugal atm so that's out for now.

When I was at Sandhurst I was one of the few officer cadets to actually sleep in my bed - when I woke up in the morning I'd iron the bed as I made it. Other cadets used to sleep on the floor in their sleeping bag. This may have been the first and last time I ever ironed bedding.

Thanks for all the tips.

Came on to say exactly this.

My daughter told me about it last year (she doesn't own an iron!)
Why did I never know this?

Sooverthemill · 03/08/2020 17:12

'Get away with'? Is there someone who inspects your bed linen? Or simply an unrealistic expectation you have placed in yourself. It's not compulsory to iron anything. Just don't do it

mineofuselessinformation · 03/08/2020 17:14

Don't overload your machine either.
I do iron, but hate super-creased things!

Cynderella · 03/08/2020 17:36

I never used to iron anything. Polycotton bedding folded and smoothed from tumble drier or from the line was good enough. As it dried, I would fold it and turn it if I was around.

Now I have lovely heavy cotton bed linen that I iron because I don't like the look of it not ironed. A steam generator iron was the game changer for me. I can iron a basket of laundry in the time it used to take me to iron a couple of shirts with my old steam iron.

Yellowfeather · 03/08/2020 17:39

I always iron bed linen, even fitted sheets! I don't think you can get that crisp look without ironing when you have 100% cotton bedding.

EggysMom · 03/08/2020 17:43

Use lamps rather than an overhead light in the bedroom - in the gloom, you won't see the creases. Worried about the morning? Don't be, nobody is ever awake enough in the morning to think how their bed looks Grin

PossiblePoodleParent · 03/08/2020 18:11

Don't use cotton or polycotton! Unless it's genuinely too hot for anything except a cotton sheet - but here in the NW of England that's pretty rare. Smile

We use Dunelm's teddy bear fleece stuff most of the year, or the Cozee Home stuff from QVC. Deliciously soft and warm, washes and dries very quickly (with or without low temp tumble drying) and NEVER needs any ironing at all.

When it's hot I use my 100% cotton bedding from Ikea and make a conscious decision not to give a shit whether it's creased or not. Although TBH it tends to look pretty good - I dry it folded carefully in half over the bannisters rather than tumble drying, and that helps a lot.

Or sometimes I use cotton jersey bedding; again Dunelm usually have some nice stuff. It's worth buying good quality with jersey, so it feels like your favourite t-shirt rather than going scratchy. Cool enough for summer, and with a quick straightening tug while making the bed it looks great with no creases.

DanaScully53 · 03/08/2020 18:24

I always iron bedding... and tea towels. They fit in drawers a lot better and I find it relaxing. Smile and it looks so nice.
