How to get away with not ironing bedding

I don't iron bedding and I won't.

I'd like it to be less creased though. Grin

I don't have a tumble dryer but used to take bedding to a local laundrette for speed (15 mins for £1.50 and three entire bed sets dried in that time!). This helped in my crease free dream.

I've stopped doing that though as shut during the pandemic, not logistically sustainable and questionable in terms of being green with car journeys.

So are there any tips for how to wash and air dry (I have a whirligig) bedding to minimise creases?

I do an extra spin on machine to speed up drying time but perhaps I shouldn't spin at 1200? Top spin on my machine.

Eco friendly and lazy housekeeper ideas a bonus!

@DanaScully53. Not just me then Smile I love a pile of ironed tea towels! It just seems too slovenly to have wrinkled linen.

Cynderella · 03/08/2020 19:03

Me too @DanaScully53 and @Yellowfeather

I also think ironing is good for killing bacteria - I don't use bleach or disinfectant very much at all, but hot washes for whites and ironing must help.

Yellowfeather · 03/08/2020 19:07

My grandma used to iron the gusset of knickers for exactly that reason!

Cynderella · 03/08/2020 19:46

@Yellowfeather - even I don't iron my knickers!

When my kids were little, I didn't iron at all, so I do get not wanting to iron bed linen, especially king sized fitted sheets - I always iron them first when they're in the pile to get them out of the way. Now, I like crisp cotton bedding, but as pp pointed out, there are lots of options in brushed cotton such as flannelette that only need smoothing to look and feel nice.

Maybe expensive cotton jersey bedding is nicer than the sets I've had in the past (from Next, I think). They never looked nice after the first wash.

I dont do undies either but it's good to know I'm not the only linen freak Wink.

@pinkbalconyrailing

seersucker bedding. fitted sheets and not giving a damn. smoothing it out before hanging it up helps a lot though
I've just bought seersucker bedding! Awesome discovery!

Just dry it flat. Hang it up over bannisters if you have them, or fold once and hang to dry over a door?

user1471523870 · 03/08/2020 20:43

I fold it neatly and hung on the railing upstairs. It gets 'ironed' by its own wait:)

CatBatCat · 03/08/2020 20:50

Hang on a straight line not a whirly gig and pin it square and pulled taught. No need for iron

Bramleyapples13 · 16/08/2020 07:17

I don't iron anything. I fold the bedding as it comes off the bed and put it into the washer folded up. Then hang it straight out on the line or airer. I just use fabric detergent and softener and put a bit of fabuloso or zoflora in the softener drawer.

Hand held clothes steamer.

Thecobwebsarewinning · 22/08/2020 10:21

If you tumble dry the duvet cover put the still warm cover back on the duvet the very second the cycle stops before the creases have a chance to ‘set‘ as the cover cools. Then smooth it out over the bed. All our bed linen is pure cotton and this works a treat. It might not be Sandhurst or 5 star hotel crisp but they look smooth and neat enough for me.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 22/08/2020 10:24

I only iron bedding when we have visitors, and then iron it once it is on the bed, and the quilt inside the cover. Much easier and less likely to crease than over an ironing board.

CherryPavlova · 22/08/2020 10:29

Send it to the laundry.
Buy polyester cotton (feels horrid but is crease free)
Use a counterpane
Pay someone to iron
Use sheets and blankets.

How about the ironing with a clothes hanger, I saw Stacey Solomon write about it. It was in the Mirror a few days ago, www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/stacey-solomons-ultimate-home-hacks-22517142

TOFO1965 · 31/08/2020 16:40

I do up the buttons on the duvet cover so it doesn't get too tangled, and I never overload the washing machine. I spin at 1600 as they'd take forever to dry otherwise. I like crisp linen, but would never have the patience to iron it all. I used to send it to the cleaners for press only, but lockdown put paid to that and now I'm used to it, and to be honest after a nights sleep they all look the same! I change my bedding a lot though, at least every three days or so.
