How do I make my home smell nice?

Hello! I don't think we're particularly stinky, but with a seven month old baby and two large fluffy cats, I'm pretty sure our home smells a little now and again and I'm worried we're nose-blind.

I'd like to make it clear that hygiene-wise, we're pretty diligent - cat lifted cleaned religiously and swiftly, we have a good well-sealed nappy bin etc

What else can we do to make our home smell lovely (that isn't toxic to cats - so no plug-ins or anything)? I don't want to burn candles with the cats around, and those reed diffuser things don't seem to last. I'm keen to hear your tips!

place scented dryer sheets around the house (on window ledges behind curtains, under chairs etc). I was sceptical but it does make the house smell lovely!

sleepismysuperpower1 · 31/07/2020 22:12

oh, and also those plug in scent things

Mixitupalot · 31/07/2020 22:13

Get a bunch of lilies they have penetrated every corner of my house & it smells fab!

ClattyPat · 31/07/2020 22:15

I thought you shouldn't have lillies with cats, or is that an old wives tale?

RedPandaFluff · 31/07/2020 22:16

Oh I like the dryer sheets idea - that's easy. Can't do plug-ins though - they irritate the cats, and lilies are super-toxic to cats Sad

I'm starting to think the answer might be to bin the cats . . . Wink

Recently I have been leaving a few drops zoflora in the cleaned sink... Smell is keeping my kitchen smelling lovely!!

kittybee · 31/07/2020 22:18

Lily’s are poisonous to cats. If you don’t already then having windows open helps freshen the air.

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 31/07/2020 22:19

Open the windows as often as possible. If you can, plant honeysuckle near the windows! Grin

CornishTiger · 31/07/2020 22:26

Honestly? With a baby you really don’t want artificial scents and chemicals in your home.

Plants, fresh flowers and fresh air with windows open in mornings should be sufficient.

justasking111 · 31/07/2020 22:29

The cloths I use to clean the bathroom hang them on the radiator, they smell lovely for days with traces of zoflora. DIL uses wax melts, they smell gorgeous too. I know what you mean with two dogs I am always sniffing and washing bedding.

Zoflora in hot water in the sink

TK1930 · 31/07/2020 22:34

Neom reed diffuser/home mist
100% aromatherapy
Happy scent smells amazing

I wouldn't go near anything like the above suggestions with a baby in the house. Why would you want a young baby smelling these things and who knows what the effects are.
Also I wouldn't keep fresh flowers in the house constantly either.
Not really sure what to suggest other than use environmentally friendly natural cleaning products and open the windows! ... unless you are near a main road Confused!

RedPandaFluff · 31/07/2020 22:43

Hmmm . . . I was aware of a zoflora phenomenon but I've never actually used it. Okay, I'll give it a go, and I've ordered those tumble dryer sheets too - thank you!

I do open the windows as much as possible and I love the other natural ideas like planting honeysuckle - I'm conscious of not exposing the baby to too many chemicals. Thanks everyone!

Oh we do use natural/environment-friendly cleaning products already - I've done that for a long time as I've always had animals and worried about toxicity.

I made small balls of cotton yarn, drip it with essential oil and hang it in the bathroom with the litter tray. You can put these where you like away from the cats and with the fragrance you like, last five-six days minimum.

Murmurur · 01/08/2020 14:32

Clean your carpets, sofas if fabric, curtains, cushion covers.

If you need other scents I would stick to essential oils, avoiding citrus. I put them in an oil burner, but obviously not when there's a baby around.

LizzieMacQueen · 01/08/2020 15:04

I've bought myself a Muji diffuser, it's an investment buy but the way it works is lovely. You fill it with water and essential oil and set it for up to 4 hours. It provides a constant stream of scented air/water vapour.

liverpool1981 · 01/08/2020 15:10

I put zoflora in an old pot with water and boil up on the stove and the house smells nice but I do wonder if it's bad for your lungs

TheSandgroper · 02/08/2020 09:50

I go for fresh air here. And on breezy days, I put pillows, cushions, throws, quilts etc out in rotation. Preferably sunny, too, but just a good breeze is good.

DH can do terrible things to a pillow so that goes out often.

CasuallyMasculine · 02/08/2020 09:54

It depends what you want your house to smell of.

If you’re happy for it to smell of Zoflora, use Zoflora, etc ...

CasuallyMasculine · 02/08/2020 09:55

What I meant was, a house that smells of Zoflora isn’t necessarily a clean house.

BeeTrees · 02/08/2020 09:57

Open every window in the house in the morning first thing. Even if winter and freezing outside. Then we only do 30mins. Then the heating goes on after wards. No smells, fresh air and germs gone.

Ifonlywecouldwishuponastar · 06/08/2020 20:13

Fabulosa jn watermelon is lovely and fresh smelling. You can get it as a disinfectant and a foam spray for the carpet/ and upholstery . I've got a dog and it doesn't seem to affect her. I hope that helps.
