Cleaning the loo properly

I have always wondered how you do this. Someone told me not to use
the brush on the seat just the bowl.

wowfudge · 22/06/2020 14:29

Well yes, how would you use it on the seat?! It's for under the rim and in the pan.

Apolloanddaphne · 22/06/2020 14:29

Of course you don't use the brush on the seat. I don't use one at all.

DanniArthur · 22/06/2020 16:11

Lots of bleach and the brush is for inside the toilet. I use a cloth and disinfectant for the toilet seat.

TimeWastingButFun · 22/06/2020 16:18

I pour bleach around the rim, squirt flash all over the pedestal, seat, lid and cistern, use kitchen roll on all but the inside then clean the inside with a special more hygienic loo brush we've got, flush and clean the brush in the flush. Do this every morning then leave bleach in all except the en-suites overnight (bleach fumes waft into bedrooms)

Franticbutterfly · 22/06/2020 20:25

I spray a non foaming all purpose cleaner all
Over the toilet, including seat, pedestal, floor, button, and I wipe it all off with kitchen paper, then I put toilet cleaner or bleach down and scrub with the loo brush using plenty of elbow grease until it foams up and I leave it as long as possible. On the days I'm not doing a huge clean, I use a bit of all purpose cleaner and clean behind the loo seat, the flush and on and under the seat and wipe off with loo roll and follow with either bleach or toilet cleaner.

isseywith4vampirecats · 23/06/2020 20:50

I spray the outside parts of the toilet with all purpose cleaner and then get the marigolds on squirt cleaner down the toilet inside and under the rim and use a sponge scourer for all the bits I can reach inside the loo under the rim under the waterline works better than a loo brush

thisstooshallpass · 23/06/2020 21:48

Simple thick bleach and a cloth. I then soak used cloth in bleach before using again.

A loo isn't clean unless it's bleached, for me.

Dinglethedragon · 26/06/2020 23:02

Ok loo experts I need recommendations for the best product to clean a couple of old stained loos with minimal manual effort.

Elderly relative shielding (who had a v good cleaner prior to lockdown that kept on top of this). The loos are also elderly - one at least 50yrs old the other over 30yrs, so some etching of the surface over time. She's been using a couple of products, (the latest evidently is toilet duck) but there's below the water staining that she says just won't shift.

Any ideas?

Minniee · 26/06/2020 23:05

Black Harpic shifts anything.

Joiningthegossip · 26/06/2020 23:06

@dinglethedragon
In Aldi they sell bleach tablets, our toilets get the brown water stains quickly so every 3 days or so I chuck a couple of the tablets down the loo and leave for 15/20 min then they come up clean after a quick toilet brush scrub

nevergoingoutagain · 26/06/2020 23:06

Bail out all the water and squirt black harping on it if it doesn't work with water still in.

2tired2bewitty · 26/06/2020 23:10

Black harpic for the win.

Or, if you have a more eco friendly bent, Ecover do a ‘power’ version of their loo cleaner, which is pretty good.

Dinglethedragon · 26/06/2020 23:11

Wow that was quick - thanks, I'll pass that on, maybe get her some black harpic as a gift 😉

Franticbutterfly · 27/06/2020 01:16

Some people rub it with a pumice stone.

StillWeRise · 28/06/2020 19:08

@TimeWastingButFun what is this special hygienic toilet brush of which you speak?

EnlightenedOwl · 28/06/2020 19:12

Rather bad but I use kitchen roll for loo seat cleaning. Inside the loo and rim I do have toilet brushes

TimeWastingButFun · 29/06/2020 00:43

@StillWeRise they're Joseph Joseph ones, very easy to keep clean, I leave it in the bleach water in the loo for a while after cleaning it all and it stays completely clean, not like the grim bristle ones.

motherofawhirlwind · 29/06/2020 00:46

Black Harpic for sure. Nothing else gets the limescale off ours.

Nixee2231 · 29/06/2020 00:56

I have the Joseph Joseph loo brush as well and it's amazing, I hated loo brushes and never owned one until I got it. It's got little rubber spikes instead of bristles so it stays very clean and is very easy to disinfect. The version I have also has a slot in the brush holder for toilet cleaner.

This pic is what I have but there are also versions without the cleaner slot, or in gray, or stainless steel.

If it is really stubborn build up then take out some of the water and add in a couple of denture tablets and leave for as long as possible. This will remove the build up

itsureis · 29/06/2020 20:38

How do you take the water out of the loo 🙄

HasaDigaEebowai · 30/06/2020 10:21

literally put a container into the water and remove some. It won't refill properly until you flush.

VitreousHumour · 30/06/2020 11:43

Kitchen roll has been the revelation here. I want to be green but I never know what to do with cloths that have wiped bodily fluids. I don't even want them near other stuff in the dirty linen.

But what about underwear and nappies? Surely you just put them straight into the washing machine?
