How do you keep your kitchen recycling tidy?

We have two massive marks bags that we sort cardboard and tins etc into but they look so messy and take up so much room. Does anybody have a neat and tidy solution that works and saves space? I don't have anywhere else to put it! Tia!

Simple solution here that works for us - we have one of those colourful tubs under the kitchen sink. All recycling gets rinsed and put in straight after using then when it's full we take it out to the wheelie bins/boxes. Smart kitchen bin for all the non-recyclables and a counter top caddy for the compost bin stuff.

TimeWastingButFun · 21/06/2020 10:19

(Including cardboard, we just sort it into the garden bins when tub full)

Sooooobored · 21/06/2020 10:19

Mine goes straight in the recycling bin outside my house. I seem to have tons of recycling so I don’t let it build up in the house.

RedRed9 · 21/06/2020 10:20

I have a small recycling bin under the sink that gets emptied into the outside one regularly.

ChaoticCatling · 21/06/2020 10:21

I just take mine out daily to the outside bin, and the cardboard and paper is under the stairs. I only have food waste and general rubbish in the kitchen.

Bmidreams · 21/06/2020 10:21

We have an actual bin in the kitchen. With a lid.

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 21/06/2020 10:22

We’ve got stackable bins from Ikea, I’ve found a picture of them on google. Works well to separate everything out, but you do need to have the space for them.

I just have two bins in my kitchen, one for rubbish, one for recycling. The recycling bin is larger because we generate more recycling than rubbish. Compostables are taken straight out to the compost bin, we don’t let them accumulate in house because they are nasty and smelly.

NutshellBound · 21/06/2020 10:25

I didn't even think about making room under the sink, that's a great idea. I love those stacked bins too - I'll do a bit of measuring

I have two bins, one for rubbish and one for recycling. Food waste goes in the compost bin. It works for me.

SuperficialSuzie · 23/06/2020 16:04

We've got one of these www.argos.co.uk/product/9179406?clickSR=slp:term:double%20recylign%20bin:2:3:1
One side for rubbish and the other for recycling

Viviennemary · 25/06/2020 11:53

I'm not tidy. But we have two kitchen bins. One for recycling and one for general rubbish. Then when full empty outside. That works for us.

NotMeNoNo · 29/06/2020 10:52

The secret I think is to align with your recycling collection. If your council collects card, tins, etc separately, have bins or boxes for those things. Then it takes 2 minutes to empty into the outside bin, no further sorting needed.

Our collection is one bin for all dry recycling so we just have a second large bin that fills up about every 2 days. Previously when it was separate bins we had a pull out cupboard with card/paper and tins/glass compartments.
Look up "brabantia sort and go" for decent bins that look nice and are easy to carry and clean. They need to be big enough for bulky packets of course.

ThroughThoroughThoughTough · 29/06/2020 10:59

The Joseph Joseph bin with integrated recycling and food waste. Works brilliantly and worth the (expensive even on Black Friday) price tag.

NotMeNoNo · 29/06/2020 11:02

I'd say at least 25/30 litre bins if you don't want to be emptying them 3 times a day too.

sleepyhead · 29/06/2020 11:04

We use the deepest size Ikea trofast box and empty it when it gets full (so a couple of times a week). We used to use a bag, but the rigid size container feels tidier and probably holds the equivalent of 2 bags.

Barbararara · 29/06/2020 18:31

I have three bins under my sink (all Ikea but I can’t remember the names) - two small for general refuse, and compost and a bigger one for clean recycling. It’s just enough to empty once a day.
I’d like to have them on a sliding shelf but they just scrape in under the u bend.

Any big packages go straight out into the big bin.

Other recycling like batteries, bottles, small electrical waste, etc is in the utility room and shed.

jellyshoeswithdiamonds · 29/06/2020 19:28

Taken straight out to recycling bags/boxes in garden. In the winter I bring them closer to the backdoor so I can just drop things in without going out. Summer time bins moved further away as its the sitting area.

At dh's flat we have a separate bag and every time someone goes out the recycling gets taken to put into communal recycling bins. We have a dog so go out at least three times a day so it doesn't build up.

hiredandsqueak · 29/06/2020 19:33

I take mine straight out to the bin. Our recycling bin takes everything with no sorting so I just throw in the recycling as and when. I do the same with general rubbish as well because the kitchen is small and a bin would get in the way.

ShaunaTheSheep · 29/06/2020 19:41

A pair of matching bins, one for rubbish, one for recycling, both emptied into the respective wheelie bins once a week, and a small food waste caddy, ditto.

LovingLen · 29/06/2020 20:33

Normal Brabantia rubbish bin in kitchen, recycling is open plastic waste bin kept in tiny room between kitchen and toilet where I keep my washing and brooms etc. I open the door and throw it in and empty once a day

BrieAndChilli · 29/06/2020 20:38

We also have the stackable ikea boxes with flaps at the front and I got these stickers for them

Nicklebox · 30/06/2020 21:18

We have an integral garage and keep all the bags and sacks for recycling out there so i stack all the recycling up on the side next to the door and take it all out first thing every morning.

CatBatCat · 02/07/2020 11:29

The wheelie bin is right by the back door so it just gets thrown straight in there and never builds up in the kitchen

CremeEggThief · 02/07/2020 11:30

I put mine straight out in the wheelie bin, which is by the back door.
