Get rid of the kitchen bin!!!

Jodierachel · 28/05/2020 16:44

Our kitchen bin has broken and any decent looking bin is £50 plus.

I'm seriously considering just having a small handled bag on my door handle and taking the bag to the wheelie bin each night?!

Is that weird? 😂

I remember how depressed and old I felt when I spent £50 on our bin. The pedal doesn't even work properly any more!

You'll find a bag annoying and unhygienic if you use your bum as often as i do! That should say "bin" not "bum" but I'm leaving it in in case it makes anyone smile...

NotMeNoNo · 28/05/2020 16:49

You just need a good Addis plastic cheapie.

Mixingitall · 28/05/2020 16:50

Who don’t you get a small compost bin (amazon do some lovely ones) and have it on your worktop for tea bags and food waste, and use an office type bin for paper, plastic and other items?

catmg · 28/05/2020 16:51

Definitely depressing to get excited about bins but I have a £80 Simple Human one that comes with a lifetime guarantee. It has been worth every penny, never had an issue with it in all the years we've had it.

I come from a house where we had a bag over a door handle and that can get messy very quickly!

JoesExotic · 28/05/2020 16:58

I don't have a bin, I've never had one. I think they encourage leaving smelly food & debris rotting away for a corner for days.
I do the bag thing & take it out each night, but I'm single without kids.

JoesExotic · 28/05/2020 16:59

Actually I might be a bit bin phobic. Kitchen bins actually repulse me.

Happydaysforever123 · 28/05/2020 17:14

I keep a smallish plastic bucket under the sink and use as a bin. No lid but smallish so never smells as emptied frequently. And a bucket for cleaning jobs around the house.

WhenItIsOver · 28/05/2020 17:18

I used to have a bin under the sink that opened when the cupboard door was opened. If the cupboard wasn't so full of stuff I would get another one.

Currently have an Addis one with a lift up top, not a swing bin, they are useless, and a bigger one for the recycling but that is because we had those when we moved and as the entire kitchen needs a facelift there is no point in worrying about it.

It did, thank you! Grin

Helloagain20 · 28/05/2020 17:53

I use a small bin bottom with a bag, in a cupboard, because it's small it needs emptying every other day.

CurseryKinkajoo · 28/05/2020 17:59

We use a bum bag (deliberately following the trend), we’ve had bins in the past and they get skanky and no one empties them. Bizarrely a hanging bag is regularly taken to the bin.

We do have a small counter top compost bin for raw stuff and very little cooked waste which probably helps as well.

dudsville · 28/05/2020 18:08

When i was single i didn't have a bin arms did what you're thinking of doing. Then i head to buy a bin, it's 15 years old. I'm not going to get up to rememberthe name of it but it's something like "Brabita"? But you could also put something in a cupboard, a container with a lid, and empty that nightly?

thatsallineed · 28/05/2020 18:13

A 50 litre kitchen bin from B&M is a princely £6.99.

Happynow001 · 29/05/2020 07:21

Brabantia.

I prefer the B&M price though!

Splinkyplonk · 29/05/2020 07:24

Yes bins are horrible and dirty.
We used to do the plastic bag method which was great but can't now because the dog would just raid it.

VettiyaIruken · 29/05/2020 07:25

Bit of a pain for sorting the recycling though. Or would you have several bags on your door handle?

lotusbell · 29/05/2020 07:35

I got this recently to replace the swing bin we had with a crack in the bottom. Takes up a bit less room in my tiny kitchen and easier to empty plate scrapings into - I'm looking at you DS13 - I still baulked at the £25 price tag. Lid feels a bit flimsy so not sure it'll last that long and I scratched the bastard getting it out of the box, opening it with a pair of scissors. It was just in the Amazon box on it's own, no plastic or bubble wrap etc. Great for cutting down on waste but wish I'd been more careful!

lotusbell · 29/05/2020 07:37

We have a bag for recycling in the kitchen as we've nowhere to put another bin but it's hanging off the end of the radiator next to the back door and gets full quickly and in the way so needs emptying daily.

Get rid of the kitchen bin!!!
Thisismytimetoshine · 30/05/2020 10:38

I do the plastic bag behind the door thing ever since the dog learned to tip the bin over and strew the contents the length of the room.
The big fool hasn't yet worked out how to get behind the door!
I prefer it now, tbh, I always hated dragging the bag out of the bin.

Thisismytimetoshine · 30/05/2020 10:43

That's quite astoundingly ugly. I prefer my hidden plastic bag Grin

WhatWouldDominicDo · 30/05/2020 10:58

We have 3 bins (big kitchen). One for plastic and cardboard, one for glass and tin and one for everything else, as that corresponds to the bins the council have given us.
We have a small pot by the sink for veg peelings, teabags etc and empty that into the compost bin outside every day.

tenlittlecygnets · 30/05/2020 11:28

I had a bin but I hated it, so I do the bag over door handle thing and empty it every day. Might not look the nicest, but...

MovingTowardsANewPositivity · 30/05/2020 11:36

I was quite unsettled when I spent £110 on a kitchen bin 12 years ago (Brabantia) and dh was horrified Grinbut it has earned its price to be fair!

We still have the same bin, it has a couple of dents, but no rust, and all I have had to replace is the catch a couple of times (about £3 on Amazon/EBay).

It is a tall 30 litre stainless steel bin, and the lid fits in the dishwasher, and I wipe the outside of it with kitchen cleaner and it looks good as new. The inner plastic bin is wiped out with Dettol and kitchen roll every time the bin is emptied.
