Get rid of the kitchen bin!!!

Jodierachel · 28/05/2020 16:44

Our kitchen bin has broken and any decent looking bin is £50 plus.

I'm seriously considering just having a small handled bag on my door handle and taking the bag to the wheelie bin each night?!

Is that weird? 😂

Have you tried the simple human bins we have two and there great very very sturdy

GiantKitten · 30/05/2020 11:43

I’ve had a bin like this for 11 years, still doing fine. It generally only gets clean non-recyclable rubbish in, and with 2 adults one bag can easily last more than 2 weeks without smelling (unless some fool DH puts something in that shouldn’t be there...)

Many other colours available.

Get rid of the kitchen bin!!!
argueifnecessary · 30/05/2020 11:44

@Mixingitall teabags are made from a material that contains plastic, don't put them in the compost! Unless you empty them first.

Jemimatheragdoll · 30/05/2020 11:46

£200 for a bin Shock, bugger me that's expensive!

We have a small Addis under the sink & I've just realised it's 20 years old as we bought it when we moved in! Bigger items get taken straight to the wheelie bin on the drive (unless it's raining)

VerbenaGirl · 30/05/2020 11:47

My in-laws did this and it drives me mad when I’m using their kitchen.

TheCraicDealer · 30/05/2020 11:51

We have a simple human one too- £110 but worth it. It has two sections, one about 2/3rds of the bin and then a skinner section of the remaining 1/3rd. We use the smaller bit for general waste (as it needs emptied more frequently to prevent smells) and then the bigger section for recycling. Food waste goes in a separate countertop bin.

We also get the simple human bags. These are pricey but they've never split or leaked and they're a perfect fit. Hate it when the bag becomes untucked and stuff ends up down the side [shudder]. Never had any bin juice problems.

It was expensive but it still looks as good as the day we unpacked it.

DH worked with a woman who bizarrely just decided to stop using bin bags in her bins altogether. Worked well for a few days until bits of food, yogurt tops, wet paper etc just got stuck to the side of the bin. Ended up having to go out and buy new ones. Completely foreseeable issue!

PhantomErik · 30/05/2020 12:09

We got rid of our kitchen bin ages ago.

We've got a very small tub that sits on a little corner worktop & we empty it into the garage bin regularly during the day.

Dillo10 · 30/05/2020 12:11

Cannot understand people saying bins are dirty and horrible?!

We have a brabantia one (it's white and quite sleek looking) with two compartments (one for recycling)

The compartments are not huge so we probably end up taking the bags out every 3 days (just me and DH at home) so nothing gets really grotty in there

I wipe it down every day and clean it thoroughly once a week (outdoors with the hose pipe and some method disinfectant)

Cannot imagine having a bin bag hanging off a door personally - what about the smell? I can literally tell when my bin is open because my bloody cat is always jumping on and off it which opens the lid

earthyfire · 30/05/2020 12:21

I am really in need of a bin with two sections because I have to separate the recycling. Every day I end up with little piles of recycling I have to keep taking out to my main bin and it drives me mad.

earthyfire · 30/05/2020 12:23

My bin gets emptied every day/cleaned/wiped and I hose/disinfect it down every week. So not dirty at all.

Mixingitall · 30/05/2020 12:35

@argueifnecessary, thank you, I didn’t know that and do put them in to the garden compost bin. Even p g tips pyramids, they just feel papery.

howlatthetrees · 30/05/2020 12:48

My bin definitley isn’t dirty. It’s deep cleaned weekly. I’d hate a bag on the door.

TimeWastingButFun · 30/05/2020 12:51

It wouldn't look very nice, how about a bucket with a bag in under the kitchen sink?

coffeechocolatecoffee · 30/05/2020 13:40

A dirty kitchen bin is a reflection on the owner, not the bin!

Also have the SimpleHuman with 2 compartments and use smaller for general waste and larger for recycling. Had it for 7yrs and counting and still looks as good as new. Had to convince DH to invest at the time but he will admit it was one of the best investments ever

Thisismytimetoshine · 30/05/2020 13:45

A dirty kitchen bin is a reflection on the owner, not the bin! Grin
A rubbish bin is, by definition, full of shit crud. Of course it's dirty, unless you give it a quick rinse with disinfectant every twenty minutes.
I've got better things to do, frankly.

Zaphodsotherhead · 30/05/2020 14:07

I have a big bin with a black bin liner in, which gets emptied about once a week. The lid means it doesn't smell. I used to have a bag on the door handle, but the dog and the cats formed an unholy trinity to climb up and rip the bag open and I got sick of coming home from work to find stuff carried up onto the worktops (by the cats) and buried in the sofa cushions (by the dog).

The bin lid is flat so they can't get their noses under it and the dog is too small to tip it over.

Zoflora in the bottom before the bin liner goes in keeps it smelling...well, of Zoflora.

coffeechocolatecoffee · 30/05/2020 14:30

Its glaringly obvious I was referring to those who said bins were unhygienic etc🤦🏽‍♀️

We rinse all food containers before putting them in bin/recycling and clean bin regularly so whilst it is full of rubbish, it is not full of rotting food or unhygienic

WellTidy · 30/05/2020 14:40

We seem to have a lot of recycling, food and general waste, so I have many receptacles!

I have four of these, which we keep in the pantry. They stack, which helps a lot. Two are for paper and cardboard; two are for glass, plastic and metals: ikea - they do smaller ones too

We have this Joseph joseph food waste caddy on the unit, which I empty every two days or so, but every day in warmer weather

And we have a normal big bin, which I think I empty every four or five days. Ours is a 30 litre pedal bin, like this one but cheaper.

I have no idea how we produce so much waste. I cook from scratch daily, compost fruit and veg peelings, eggshells etc, and there are only four of us.

AuntieMarys · 30/05/2020 14:50

I'm getting a Simply Human one next month. We have one from Homebase and the lid catch has broken. And it is a bugger to get the bin liner out.

Nixee2231 · 30/05/2020 14:53

I have 3 12 liter bins in a drawer under the sink (paper, plastic and non-recyclables) and a small 3 liter bin for compost that I can put on the counter when I'm cooking. I cant imagine living with the trash hanging on the door all day, would drive me insane.

ChaoticCatling · 30/05/2020 14:59

A bag every night is a lot of bags, unless you are reusing bread bags and other plastic packaging as bin bags. Surely if you have food and recycling collection then there's not much left. Just buy a small cheap bin?

ChaoticCatling · 30/05/2020 15:01

Something like a 12 litre white swing bin from wilko is £4.

Ohnopoo · 30/05/2020 15:06

We had a bag for years. Felt like a proper grown up when we finally got a bin!

Thighdentitycrisis · 30/05/2020 15:08

I have a simple human 'bag holder' that fits inside the cupboard door.
You put a plastic bag in and it has a lid. Even now we all use bags for life I use it and find I generate enough carrier bags, as I live alone and recycle and compost most.

PinkSpring · 30/05/2020 15:09

We have just gone back to a bag from a kitchen bin.

Despite taking it out at least once a day and cleaning it weekly, when it's warm it smells weird and seems to attract ants - so gone back to a bag which we just take our frequently
