For StealthNinjaMum

We’re still here.

After 11 threads my house still isn't tidy!

So join me and a lovely group of mumsnetters who simply get rid of one thing a day and report back. Gradually we’re developing good habits, reorganising ourselves, often improving our mental health and having friendly chatter along the way.

So newbies are welcome, just check in with your news and join in the general chat about recycling, organisation and housework.

ALSO many of us have set a target to get rid of 2020 items this year and will report on that.

Sorted through the pile of clothes in the dining-room as per FlyLady. Now have a full ragbag, and unearthed some cassette tape boxes. Tomorrow I intend putting all outgrown uniform in a bag that school might want. If not, it can go to donation centre.

Back to the shed of doom this afternoon and one more box emptied. Just 5 items in the bin. Currently airing a linen table cloth and 6 nursery/infant school unused tea towels bearing DCs' self portraits or hand prints. A little reminiscing looking at the various names. Last item retrieved, and also being aired, is a Cinderella dressing up set. Can't see DD wanting to keep it, but will check, and then donate to charity.

Tomorrow's box is kitchen items. Likely all to be donated/dumped as we clearly haven't needed them for ?years.

Ah well Meg every little helps i guess it is two days worth after all. Sounds like good inroads into the shed Polly i love the idea of looking at the tea towel drawings. We’ve had them from scouts and school. Sadly ours were all printed on what seemed to be water repelling fabric and have long since been decluttered. New bed assembled and a ton of cardboard packaging ready for the tip.

SingToTheSky · 04/08/2020 21:28

What is it with those tea towels being such non-drying fabric gassy it’s weird isn’t it!

I’ve done no decluttering today as I was tackling some other tasks and I’m very tired now.

I did look at some possible storage in town though, and some butterfly-friendly display frames that might be possible to put up with command strips and thus avoiding the crappy wall issue. I’ve got lots of ideas but I’m nervous of just buying lots of stuff without explicitly planning where to put it all.

Times10 · 05/08/2020 12:55

I sorted the kitchen out, lots of jars and plastic boxes gone, as I’d bought a few glass Tupperware style boxes to replace the plastic ones. Truth be told, I put the plastic ones in the shed in case I need them to organise some drawers later on, but I’m pretty sure we’ll be getting rid of them within the next year.

I also cleaned the top of the cabinets (something I hadn’t done since we moved in almost 3 years ago Envy < not envy) How often should I be doing it? Obviously once every 3 years is not OK, but I don’t actually know how often I should be doing it!

I’ve also reorganised everything so there’s nothing left on top of the cabinets, as we had started storing so much random bits on them!

Times10 · 05/08/2020 12:56

I have ordered a couple of plastic boxes to store the DCs school books etc in the loft, as we currently have them in a lidless cardboard box that is not loft proof.

the outgrown school clothes are in one bag for donation, and the casual clothes in another. Still in "dining-room" dumping ground, but tidy in one corner and labelled.

About twenty egg boxes went into the paper bin this week. We can always collect more if/when needed. I looked on youtube and saw loads of brilliant things to do with egg boxes, but I think I'll keep that up my sleeve for dark wintry evenings.

pollyannaperspective · 05/08/2020 16:22

Lots of activity going on it seems. I still have to venture to the shed today.
Re kitchen cupboards - we had ours go to the ceiling to avoid the need to clean. I have seen it suggested that you layer ?newspaper or kitchen roll on the top of cupboards so you just remove it every ? 3 years and replace.
Efforts to leave donations at the charity shop have been thwarted as a new drop off at 9.30 am system has been introduced. Will have to wait until Friday, but, conveniently, DH (still recovering from broken leg and limited mobility) is going to get a haircut next to the shop at 9 am. We should be able to park outside in the disabled space too as DH has a blue badge.
Other outs - some protein bars, not consumed by DC who has now returned to overseas location, donated to foodbank collection in village.

SingToTheSky · 05/08/2020 16:53

Dang it. Went to next town over today and their Robert dyas didn’t have the trays I wanted 🙄 so I’ll get them in my town tomorrow. I’ve ordered some things to tidy up a couple of things in a butterfly friendly way online though. And bought a tiny very pretty plate to keep my earrings on! I will have nice things dammit!

I’ve done no decluttering though, I’m in a mood and CBA!

Times10 · 05/08/2020 17:46

Up to the ceiling sounds like the best option, if we ever get to remodelling our kitchen, it would add a huge amount of storage too!

Tbh I probably would have left it a lot longer years if we hadn’t been decluttering in there for the last few days!

Times10 · 05/08/2020 17:47

Strike through fail. My iPad won’t let me do them properly!

AlexTheLittleCat · 05/08/2020 22:23

Pollyanna the kitchen cupboards are a great idea. I also forget to clean on top of them. I think everyone does? Apart from Mrs Hinch Grin

More cardboard into the recycling, must tackle the kitchen again next.

The boxes I ordered have arrived, and they’re the perfect size so I’ve ordered some more!

2 boxes ready for the loft, and a box worth of paper currently being burned by DH and the DCs. When the new boxes turn up, there’ll be at least 2 more boxes in the loft. I don’t really know how long to keep some of the paperwork as you hear horror stories of needing a proof of something or other 15 years down the line. I did get rid of bills from previous properties though.
I haven’t actually created any more space at the moment, but once the boxes are in the loft, it should help our cupboard of doom.

Times10 · 06/08/2020 15:52

Out, a mug tree. We’re putting the mugs that came with the tree in the mug cupboard, so we actually use them (hopefully!) and the tree can go. We’ve had this for almost 11 years and must have used the mugs 3 times, but they’re so pretty, so I want to finally use them!

Now I need to tidy our living/dining room, every surface is full of stuff, I don’t know what happened, it was neat 2 days ago!

Vinorosso74 · 06/08/2020 16:09

A few more outs this week; all small but still outs.
Funny you mention mugs Times10 but I just discovered a few at the back of a kitchen cupboard which I can't decide what to do with. In the same cupboard we also have a random assortment of bottles of booze (port, Southern Comfort, mango liquer amongst other things) which I'm unsure what to do with. I think some will just get poured away which seems a waste.
DP voluntarily cleared a shelf of his things out and he has a start date for a new job so we need to book a dump run and get everything together for that.

StealthNinjaMum · 06/08/2020 16:21

Ladies, I am so sorry I haven't been on for ages, I have only just 'tidied' up after home schooling. I say tidied but there are piles of paper but I have a dining table again which is wonderful.

Anyway I have now read through about the last fortnight's updates and I can see you've all been really busy. I hope I can be as motivated. Sorry for the length of this update.

@laneboy how are you doing with flylady? I subscribed a few years ago but couldn’t keep up. It’s a nice idea but I failed even at keeping my shoes on and washing the sink so it didn’t last.

You’ve made some interesting points about getting rid of things. I started reading Kondo and didn’t finish (it’s cluttering my bedroom) but your point about appreciating that there was a purpose of a wasted item of clothing or unplayed board game but it’s ok to get rid of them now they’ve served their purpose. I try to be green which is why decluttering has taken me this long but I have just thrown a few things away in lockdown and I feel bad about that but in perspective I’m probably still greener than many of my friends.

@jigoloharmegiddo I did the clutterbug quiz and got that I’m a ladybug – I’m sure I was a cricket last year? It seems to suit me now though. I then checked my emails and I also did it in 2019 and never read the free guide – or any of the emails I’ve received since. I have lost my clutter mojo so I hereby announce that I am now getting back into it. I do like tidy surfaces but behind them are Cupboards Of Chaos!

We have a label maker and I’ve labelled out stationery and arts and craft stuff. I love it.

@pickledlilly congratulations on the move. I hope you’ve settled in and you’re having a good summer. It’s impressive that you have moved into such a small space.

@mrstidyhouse lovely to hear that you decluttered with your DS. I think living well / tidying / decluttering are skills that we need to teach our children. My stbexh was the child of hoarders and so it accounted for his refusal to ever throw anything away. It’s important that my dc are more like me than him (well the ‘new’ me who declutters rather than the old me who shoved things in boxes / bags and threw them in the Room of Doom!)

@singtothesky we keep our arts and craft things in Trofast units. Inside the drawers we have smaller Really Useful boxes separated by what’s in them.

Have you sorted out your lego problem? Ours is also ‘displayed’ on the floor. I have picked up a couple of boxes from Sainsburys – flat, open, cardboard ones – and dd2 puts finished things in there and they slide under the bed and then out again but more often than not she doesn’t put them away again. It's not really displaying them but it does mean her favourite things can be easily hidden and then got out again.

Anyway since I last updated I think I

  • Sold a table
  • Sold a playpen
  • Put a load of children’s underwear in rag bag
  • Threw out half a dozen bulky catalogues
  • Finished the last of my many shower gels. Now I just have one large ‘naice’ bottle and soap
  • Threw away gym trousers that had a hole
  • Have given away some candles and a fancy bottle to a friend who’s holding a charity bric a brac garden sale
  • Thrown away some old mouse traps
  • Thrown away mincemeat (ie the stuff for mince pies NOT meat) that went off in 2012.
  • Gave two bags of old bathroom tiles to a friend

Ooh, that's actually quite a lot now I've written it down. I still have bags of stuff to go to charity shops as we only seem to have two open but it can wait.

Times10 · 06/08/2020 16:33

vino one word: cocktails! Grin

stealth you’ve done well with all your outs!

Vinorosso74 · 06/08/2020 16:51

I've just been googling cocktail recipes for the mango liquer which don't involve adding to the collection. In the interests of decluttering I have just tried some mead. It hasn't been poured down the sink yet.

SingToTheSky · 06/08/2020 18:35

Stealth nope still thinking about the lego issue. Found some of those floating shelves that could work with command strips and smaller models. Maybe.

As for flylady (that question was to my old name Wink) I’m still vaguely bearing it in mind which is all I’ve ever done really! 😳 I should pay more attention to the zones.

I’m a bit annoyed at myself today as I went to buy some of the baskets and completely went blank about what I needed them for (and thus what size I needed). I got three the same as I knew I wanted two for the Caglets’ landing baskets (where we will put anything of theirs so they can put them away later) and the third was free.

Of course now I remember I needed some for the medicine cupboard 🙄🤦‍♀️

No outs today as I’ve been out for ages. Still need to really put some thought into general life stuff and I seem to have a massive to do list which is stressing me out too much to think

Times10 · 06/08/2020 19:12

I’m doing it wrong and ordering more stuff... once again, they should help organise things, and hopefully they won’t become clutter within the next few months...

My next mission is to sort out the downstairs toilet, as everything is out of the cabinets, and looking messy, so I need to declutter until everything fits in the space we have.

RaspberryBlonde · 06/08/2020 19:43

Sounds like everyone has had a busy week! Nothing much out here as work has been busy again and lack of holiday clubs here has meant constant interruptions!

Ceiling height kitchen cupboards look great, we had them in the old house. We didn’t put them in when we redid the kitchen in our current house as the ceilings are slightly higher than standard and added a ridiculous amount of cost.

Nice to see you back @StealthNinjaMum. I completely agree on teaching kids to know when to get rid of things. We have some way to go here - this week I considered it a success that DD let me throw out some empty sheets of backing paper from a sticker book! She boards all sorts of random stuff for ‘crafts’.

Today was technically a success, but didn't feel like it. In the morning I sorted all dd2's outgrown clothes into charity and fabric recyling piles, looked up our nearest textile bin (in a carpark half a mile away) and after lunch I decided to venture forth. Sky was overcast, dd2 asleep in the buggy and dd1 scooting. We had a near disaster on the way, with the scooter almost escaping down a hill and dd1 bursting into tears over it. Then the council map sent us down a narrow road cluttered with bins, while the clouds disappeared and the day suddenly became roasting. I eventually found the correct place, dropped off the fabric recycling bag, and by then we were so hot we risked going into a shop for cold drinks and top up sunscreen. Then I pushed both kids (buggy board) and the scooter back up the hill and eventually got home feeling like I had survived a terrible ordeal, which completely ruined the satisfaction of getting rid of some stuff. Better day tomorrow I hope.
