Has anyone ever washed their sofa cushion covers themselves?

I have a Next Garda sofa in a beige colour and it is in desperate need of a clean. It does say clean in situ but I'm so tempted to have a go at putting the covers in the washing machine on a low temp hand wash cycle.

Has anyone washed theirs themselves and had any luck? Thank you

Yes. But beware they’ll be a bitch to get back on. I got very cross with dh when he wrestled one back on and tore the zip so do be careful

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 13/02/2020 21:10

Yes all the time! Also have a next sofa but did it with our last (Harvey’s) one too.

PenelopeFlintstone · 13/02/2020 21:11

Put them back on while damp. It’s even harder when they dry, but worth doing.

Trou · 13/02/2020 21:13

Yes! Although, they are now slightly lighter colour than the rest of the sofa. 😐

Lanaa · 13/02/2020 21:13

Yes I do it all the time. They're a pain to get back on but it ensures our cream soda is immaculate.

splishsplashsploshsplishsplash · 13/02/2020 21:18

Oh lovely, sounds positive! Thank you. I've just opened up one of the cushions that rests against the arm (if that makes sense) and it's full of loose threads and the inside doesn't come out easily like it expected to. I really does need a clean though.

I seriously need to clean the main seat cushions but am a bit scared!

Yes. It is hard getting cushions on again but fine once they are on.

Ginfordinner · 13/02/2020 21:35

Yes. I have two Next Garda sofas in a light colour, and washed the covers about 18 months ago during the glorious summer we had, so that I could line dry them. There are lots of loose threads but they stayed in one piece. They were a bugger to get back on though, and I don't think I dare wash them again.

TBH these sofas were not my best buying decision.

roses2 · 13/02/2020 21:36

I wash mine regularly in the machine too - so nice sitting on a clean sofa!

splishsplashsploshsplishsplash · 13/02/2020 21:51

@ginfordinner I'm not massively impressed with them either to be honest. The cushions all looked old and misshapen very quickly.

Yep! Mines DFS but I often strip it and chuck the covers in the machine. They come out lovely

TheMemoryLingers · 13/02/2020 21:57

Yes, I bunged them in the washing machine at 40 degrees and they were fine.

speakout · 13/02/2020 21:59

I have done this with lots of different sofas.

Never had a problem.

Knittingnanny · 13/02/2020 22:02

I used to do my heavyweight fabric plan ones, takes 2 of you though to wrestle them on and off. Definitely put them back on straight out of the wash

jackparlabane · 13/02/2020 22:08

Yes, make sure you put them back on while damp. Impossible when dry!

Teddy1970 · 13/02/2020 22:08

Yes I've done it and it was fine, the wash was a cool 30C and I used non biological liquid, I have to agree with everyone when they say they're a bugger to get back on...watch the zips!

thenightsky · 13/02/2020 22:10

I did mine many times, but I was always terrified of knackering the zips whilst putting them back on. In the end I did knacker the zips, but it was ok because I just stitched over them to hold them in place.

lpchill · 13/02/2020 22:16

I cheat and just fill a bowl with hot water with washing powder/fabric conditioner and a washing up brush then just dunk the brush shake off excess then gently scrub the sofa cushions. Won't get it as clean as machine but does a good job

EmmaC78 · 13/02/2020 22:20

I am another person who does this all the time.

Tript · 13/02/2020 22:25

I didn't know there was any other way of doing this Grin have done it with every sofa I've had.

splishsplashsploshsplishsplash · 13/02/2020 22:33

I'll give it a go tomorrow! Thanks for the advice about putting back on when damp.

OP posts:
Ginfordinner · 13/02/2020 23:14

I really wouldn't do them at this time of year. They will take forever to dry. And don't even think of tumble drying them.

missanony · 13/02/2020 23:16

Yes I also put back on whilst damp. I’m now waiting til spring though so I can get them dry in a day

othervoicesotherrooms · 14/02/2020 06:50

How to get the cushions back in!

Ginfordinner · 14/02/2020 07:05

That's ingenious.
