Should I worry about this when moving out

I've been in a rented house for 21 months and moving out of this property soon. Some of the grout round the bathroom tiles where the shower is are discoloured even though I've always kept on top of the cleaning. There is no window in the bathroom so I'm not if that's not helped as it's not been able to be aired properly (had quite a few problems with the bathroom fan too and it's not been taking any steam away which the landlord is aware of and hasn't fixed it properly).
I'm worried incase the landlord tries to take some deposit from me. A lot of websites have said it's classed as wear and tear but I'm not sure? I know it wasn't done before I moved in either. Neither was the sealant round the bath.
Does anyone know if it would be classed as wear and tear or not?

Is your deposit protected in one of the correct schemes? Are you in the uk?

ohhhyeah · 25/01/2020 17:26

Yes I'm in Scotland and according to my tenancy agreement it's safe deposits Scotland where the deposit is

Check that first with Safe Deposits. Just in case!

SmellMySmellbow · 25/01/2020 17:36

Is it discoloured with black mould? The HG anti mould spray gets rid of it in minutes (from sealant and grout). Rather than risk it, clean it with that.

dementedpixie · 25/01/2020 17:37

Spray grout and sealant with dettol mould and mildew remover (if the grout was white). Leave it to work for a few hours

BitchyArriver · 25/01/2020 17:37

From Shelter Website
If dampness or condensation in your home is caused by a structural defect (such as a lack of damp-proof course, poor ventilation, an inadequate heating system or a hole in the roof) your landlord must put this right within a reasonable amount of time.

I would put your case to the deposit scheme that as the landlord did not replace or repair the fan correctly you are not responsible for the mould.

BitchyArriver · 25/01/2020 17:38

Normally they do side with tennants.

ohhhyeah · 25/01/2020 17:40

Majority of it looks like that in the shower area. Would the cleaners work for that?

Yep - the HG spray is magic. I use it on painted walls, tiles, grout and sealant. Just not metal.

LIZS · 25/01/2020 17:42

Bleach or hg mould spray. Use old toothbrush to apply. Leave overnight and rinse

ChipInTheSugar · 25/01/2020 17:48

Sorry to hijack your thread OP, but what can I use when Dettol mould and mildew stuff, AND the HG stuff hasn't worked on grout spots in the shower ...?

ohhhyeah · 25/01/2020 17:49

Thanks, il give that a go tonight with the bleach and if not il buy the other mould spray you mentioned. Will see how it looks in the morning. I've also emailed the deposits scheme to see where I would stand

IF Scotland is similar to England that is wear and tear. And even if it were damage, the landlord would need evidence that it wasn't done before you moved in.

had to redo sealant after a super-clean tenant, bathroom has both working fan and window and she cleaned like mad. Sealant does go mouldy eventually. It is just wear and tear.

ohhhyeah · 25/01/2020 17:57

Thank you, makes me feel a bit better

I think Scotland may also have a how-to-rent guide, worth a read.

despite Guardian/Shelter/MN screams, the deposit protection legislation has been in since 2007 and is there for a reason.

ohhhyeah · 25/01/2020 19:01

I gave it a read, all good stuff but doesn't mention certain things like what I mentioned. It did mention about repairs etc. As I told the landlord/agency about it then I know I'm covered in that sense even though it's not been fixed

If sprays didn’t get it any cleaner looking, you could always get a white grout pen and go over it.

ChipInTheSugar · 26/01/2020 09:30

I've bought a grout pen but it says the grout has to be mould-free before using the pen on it.

sheknows31 · 26/01/2020 10:10

The spray didn't work, neither did the bleach I used on a different part. So is it definitely mould? Its just like it's stained to me. I'm tempted to just try the grout pen

@SmellMySmellbow it looks exactly the same as the pic I've posted above on this thread, the mould spray and bleach hasn't touched the marks on the grout

dementedpixie · 26/01/2020 14:57

What spray did you use and did you leave it for a few hours?

sheknows31 · 26/01/2020 15:02

I used HG on one part, another mould spray on another part (can't remember the name sorry) and bleach on another part to see if any would have an effect

dementedpixie · 26/01/2020 15:04

You could try cif cream cleaner with bleach and use a toothbrush or denture brush to scrub along the grout.

SmellMySmellbow · 26/01/2020 15:16

Sorry just seen it. Weird. My grout goes like that with mould (pinky with black spots) and the HG spray works almost instantly.
