Ok then - how often do you change your tea towels?

I've just been hanging the washing out and neighbour said I had a lot of tea towels. I said I change them almost every day, and she said "Oh I don't I just change them when they need it".

My tea towel and my hand towel are the same thing. Changed when get all damp and smelly

wastingmylife · 30/08/2007 17:06

I change them whenever my dh has been anywhere near them (he's likely to have wiped the floor with them or mopped his sweaty brow). If I'm actually drying up, I might use 3 in a day, but I don't do that often!

Katsma · 30/08/2007 20:38

Slight hijack here, but what temp do you use to wash them?

I use 40, but I'm sure that can't kill bugs n stuff can it

MrsBadger · 30/08/2007 20:47

you'd be surprised how fragile bugs really are
40 deg + detergent knackers most things

you can always iron them if you are worried

Katsma · 30/08/2007 20:54

Oh, I don't do ironing MrsBadger!

Well, only for weddings and funerals anyway

PigeonPie · 30/08/2007 21:01

I use linen tea towels, cos they dry things so much better, which I change when I think it's looking grubby, but heaven help anyone who uses it for anything other than drying dishes.

Good grief if DH used it to wipe the floor, I'd use him next time

MrsSpoon · 30/08/2007 21:06

Once a day, sometimes more, the same with cloths. I iron my tea towels too, they look better and are more hygenic this way.

Clary · 30/08/2007 22:09

oooh excellent question.

I have a hand towel for hands and a tea towel for pots. Change on towels day (Monday) but nearly always during week as well. And if used for mopping up or similar. So maybe 3-4 times/week?

DH has been known to iron them esp linen ones to "make them fit in the drawer better"

KristinaM · 30/08/2007 22:11

i use two or three a day . but its one of the few household things i am fussy about

OTOH I would never DREAM of ironing them. but then i dont iron anything

ChristmasPud · 30/08/2007 22:26

Probably not often enough, as with everything in our house.

When it feel manky? About every 2- 3 days?

Had a clean one today.

HorseyWoman · 31/08/2007 00:22

Well, in food hygeine, when I was nanny training, we were told to cook to no less than 80+ degrees to kill bugs. So I think the same would apply to washing clothes. I wash bed sheets/towels at 95!! Everything else at 30.

mymama · 31/08/2007 00:24

Every day. Three times a day when mil stays. She wipes under her face and mouth with them .

gibberish · 31/08/2007 00:26

Every day. But then I also use them to polish all my worktops and sink every day so stick them in the wash each night.

TellusMater · 31/08/2007 00:26

But you don't cook things in detergent

Kaloo20 · 31/08/2007 01:46

we have two cleans ones every day

  • always ironed
twentypence · 31/08/2007 02:11

Whenever dh does it.

BigBearistheBigBear · 31/08/2007 08:45

I change mine every day, or every two days at most.
Never iron anything!

Botbot · 31/08/2007 08:48

Every day.

But I don't iron anything.
