How do you get your house smelling good?

Moved in in November. It doesn't smell bad as such, just 'homey' if that makes sense. I haven't tried much yet aside from air freshener. Whenever I think a house smells good it always seems to be those reed diffuser things.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

@userxx yeah, the same diluted spray I use for work surfaces. Spray the diluted solution onto a dryer sheet once every week or two. I usually go for something subtle like the linen one. Smells nice but isn't too overpowering with a little blast of heating!

@autumnleaves15 👍. Ive found a random spray bottle so will add some zoflora and get spritzing.

There is is no antidote to musty or slightly grubby smells so there is no substitute for a clean, regularly aired home. If you add fragrance to a stale or musty smell you just make the problem worse

I try and air our house as much as possible. Luckily DC are all fresh air fiends too which helps. I also sometimes use Valentte candles and Reed diffusers in the hall and living rooms because they smell so beautiful. I’m not connected to them in anyway but have attached a link as they are on sale right now and are definitely worth trying.

I second opening the windows every day.
But also wash all pillows, throws, blankets, bedding etc regularly as sometimes we can't smell our own house's smells and the soft furnishing tends to absorb odors from the rooms.

I love zoflora for the floors and worktops.

Open windows and regular cleaning. I also make sure to wash throws & pet bedding reasonably often.

I only really use scented candles in the bath, and sometimes after cooking fish.

I used to have an old, smelly dog. My parents commented that when we moved to a house with hard flooring throughout, unless he was in the house, you couldn't smell him.
Hardfloors.

userxx · 15/01/2020 15:27

Yes, hardfloors help.

Scented candles in the sitting rooms and bathroom. Zoflora in the kitchen - I just pour some in the sink with water in the morning whilst I tidy the kitchen. Reed diffuser in the porch.
Our candles come from a tiny, local company. The best reed diffuser I've found was from Dunelm, surprisingly. It lasts ages.

I’ve just got in from being out and my house smells awful. I made a fish pie yesterday and the smell seems to lingering around.
I’ve opened a window and am simmering some water with satsuma peel and a few drops of vanilla.
I’ve also lit a scented candle.

Open the windows.
Force teenagers to wash.
New house? Sniff everything, every corner, radiator and wall just in case there's something nasty lurking somewhere.

Airing is best when you can. (I live on a very windy bit of coast and there are days when there's no way I'm opening a window...)

I've never got on with 'things that make your house smell' because really what it needs is to be clean and aired - MIL loves reed diffusers and once had one which had me streaming and sneezing within minutes of arrived; she had to put it outside for the duration!

However someone recently gave me one of these and I absolutely love it. It's not strong enough to scent a whole room but you notice it as you walk past and it's lovely. They do Christmassy scented ones too - I have one in the airing cupbtwhichbhjves a waft of lovely scent when you open the door but isn't strong enough to make sheets etc smell (that would be a bit much for me.)
