How do you get your house smelling good?

Moved in in November. It doesn't smell bad as such, just 'homey' if that makes sense. I haven't tried much yet aside from air freshener. Whenever I think a house smells good it always seems to be those reed diffuser things.
Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have an oil burner in the kitchen which I use with water and approx 6 cinnamon sticks. It creates a lovely aroma and is all natural.

Open the windows first thing / whilst cooking food.
Oil diffuser in the hallway.
Also use Neom essential oil wellbeing pod.

JorisBonson · 05/01/2020 09:29

Keep it as aired as possible, cooks candles in the kitchen and Yankee candles everywhere else

Specifically for the kitchen, after cleaning up I add a capful of those nice smelling disinfectants to my sinkbowl with some hot water. Smells lovely for the day Smile you can get zoflora or fablosa lots of different scents and theres more purposes to them than this but thats all I use it for atm

I’ve just opened the lounge window for the first time since August Blush to try to air the room, as it’s smelling really musty in there. It’s cheaper than having a scented candle burning all day and will hopefully do the trick!

Honestly, Asda's George Home Rose Oud diffuser is beautiful and lasts 2 months+.
I also like taking a look at tkMaxx selection.
Wax Lyrical diffusers also good.

@wondering7777 Tell me you're joking???

@wondering7777 Tell me you're joking???

I wish I was userxx Blush It took a while to actually open the window as it’s been stuck shut since being painted a while ago!

I bought some brand new curtains recently that have a really strange smell and that’s what’s causing the problem - I’ve been spraying them with fabric freshener which has worked a bit, but not entirely...

Open all windows daily for a short blast through, and put lavender oil in the Hoover before I use it Smile

userxx · 05/01/2020 10:18

@wondering7777 Ahhhhh, fair enough you couldn't open the buggers. Yeah, new curtains rugs etc can smell funky. Im sure after a few days with fresh air the smell will go.

ThePinkiestPonk · 05/01/2020 10:27

Put a bit of Zoflora on a cloth and wipe down radiator and it smells nice when heating warms them.
Aldi knock off Jo Malone candles

Donkeysdragonbaby · 05/01/2020 15:44

If it's that it doesn't smell bad, but rather like 'someone else's home' than 'my home' I'd tackle it differently and spray a bit of 'your' fabric softner diluted on the carpet and hoover it up, choose a reed diffuser you like, I love the smell of coffee and bacon rolls on a weekend so I brew coffee and barely drink it! Lemon cut in half in a bowl in the microwave for 5 mins then clean out the microwave, dry items like bedding over airers with 'your' washing powder on them when you're out. I like Duck fresh discs in the toilet, it smells nice after every flush and you can choose your scent. My house smells like 'home' after DH has had a shower with his shower gel and used his spray after. Encourage things that smell homely to you.

Babyg1995 · 05/01/2020 15:48

Clean all the rooms and air them in the morning whatever the weather keep on top of washing expecialy bedding towels and bath mats have reed diffusers and wax melts too .I'm obsessed with a clean fresh smelling house .

BoffinMum · 05/01/2020 20:05

All you need to do is:

Air each room daily
Hoover everywhere quite thoroughly at least once a week, including behind and underneath things, with a high quality hoover (I use Miele)
Get curtains and cushion covers cleaned at least once a year
Steam clean bathrooms regularly
Clean oven and extractor fan regularly
Wash bedding and towels on 60C

autumnleaves15 · 05/01/2020 20:09

I keep my window vents open all year round and keep the windows open from May-September.

I clean my radiators with zoflora once a week. I also spray a tumble dryer sheet with zoflora and tuck it down the back.

I have wax melts and/or candles burning most days. A reed diffuser in some rooms too.

Topbird29 · 05/01/2020 20:27

I like the house of fraser diffuser - wild fig and vanilla. Not a fan of big flowery fragrances - this one is subtle but nice.

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 05/01/2020 20:30

You can't beat plenty fresh air. Our rooms get aired as soon as we're up and about for an hour. I do like reed diffusers, The White Company last really well; Seychelles is my favourite (livingroom, hall, landing) as well as Verveine (bathroom and toilet)

BoffinMum · 05/01/2020 20:31

A cheap solution is a few drops of aromatherapy oil on a radiator or lightbulb

Jojobythesea · 05/01/2020 20:33

Best smelling, most long lasting diffuser EVER Smile

Jojobythesea · 05/01/2020 20:34

Oh and the same re airing the house. Windows open for a bit in the morning properly then all upstairs on the vents all day until we get back from work/school.

userxx · 05/01/2020 20:52

@Babyg1995 Do you dilute it for the radiators? I thought it would be a bit harsh.

userxx · 05/01/2020 20:54

That was meant for autumnleaves 🙈

wheresmymojo · 05/01/2020 21:13

FWIW Jo Malone reed diffusers are £££ but last ages!

I got a large one last Xmas and it has only just run out...

GidgetGirl · 05/01/2020 21:18

Regular airing and good old fashioned Nag Champa. Always gets lots of compliments and you don’t need to burn it for long at all to have an impact.

BoffinMum · 05/01/2020 21:18

Aldi do copies of Jo Malone which are great. No 3 (Pomegranate) is particularly great. www.thesun.co.uk/money/3051069/aldis-new-scented-candles-costs-3-99-each-and-it-claims-they-smell-exactly-like-jo-malone-ones-but-at-a-90-discount/
