Mopping frontroom with same mop as downstairs loo

Easilyanxious · 01/01/2020 16:02

Help an I being paranoid
Asked dh to mop kitchen floor yesterday ( new mop and bucket ) washed with zoflora and hot water
Later on I refilled mop bucket and decided to lightly mop frontroom and floor as have lvt , just found out today after doing kitchen dh also mopped downstairs loo just lightly as have real wood in there
I have then used it to mop frontroom unknowingly - new water and disenfectant but mop was still wet from clean before
Have I risked contaminating the frontroom , I have just tan steam cleaner over it (now as just found out what he had done ( day after ) to be sure or would changing water and using more disenfectant at least keep germs at bay

Are you getting therapy for your OCD and anxiety? You are worrying about nothing, there will be no ill effects to using a mop in both the bathroom and the front room, there really won't. Take the dog for a walk then come home and sit down and enjoy your very clean home.

daydreambeleiver · 02/01/2020 09:53

I have only ever had one mop and bucket

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 02/01/2020 10:09

I use a different mop for bathrooms and the rest of the house. I wouldn't worry as a one off though

If you have LVT, you shouldn't steam clean it though. It causes it to lift

Eh? I have one mop. Never crossed my mind. Do you walk from your toilet to your living room in the same socks? Grin

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 02/01/2020 11:33

I wear slippers in the house and take them off when I go into the loo. Most people I know have two different mops. Mops are cheap and it is best cleaning practice. Not really very hard to organise. Cent see why you wouldn't to be honest

Southmouth · 02/01/2020 12:01

I always use the same mop to clean everywhere, unless somewhere is particularly dirty it wouldn’t cross my mind not too

Ragwort · 02/01/2020 12:07

How do even know how many mops people have, can’t imagine ever having a conversation discussing mops Confused?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 02/01/2020 13:10

If only we could all be as cool as you ragwort. Fairly simple - I know how most of my family clean. Have small children and have lots of friends with small children. Accidents sometimes happen in each other's houses and we will help to clean up. Not unusual to go into someone's cleaning cupboard or utility room and vice versa and to see a couple of mops. Usually ask or am asked as to what one should be used for the loo or the floor in another room.

I also have two brushes - one for indoor sweeping and one for the front steps. Also entirely normal. I use another mop for the steps too so I have THREE mops. 🙀. Again, also not at all unusual with people I know.

Boring person: 'How many mops do you have?
Me: 'Fuck knows, it's the cleaner that does the mopping not me'.

But seriously, this is an OP with OCD and anxiety, no-one should be encouraging her anxiety with talk of multiple mops for different uses. There is no harm that will come to her and her family by using the same mop (but fresh water and disinfectant) in the loo and sitting room. This is what we should be reminding her of.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 02/01/2020 13:29

There is certainly some risk in doing this - those who say otherwise are in denial. We tend to have separate slippers that we leave outside the bathroom door and only wear when we're in there to avoid walking any bathroom germs around the rest of the house. I'd recommend considering that OP. At least your mop has disinfectant on it - the soles of your slippers do not.

lilgreen · 02/01/2020 13:38
Hmm
dementedpixie · 02/01/2020 13:38

There is certainly some risk in doing this

What exactly is the risk?

PaquitaVariation · 02/01/2020 13:45

There is certainly some risk in doing this

What risk?! Don’t be so ridiculous.

CountFosco · 02/01/2020 13:49

Ok, do your risk assessment here. Few questions for you to answer. What is the risk? What is the probability that the risk will happen? What is the possible outcome of the risk? What has the OP done to minimise the risk? Does that reduce the danger sufficiently to make it acceptable?

Another question for you: What are the risks associated with benzalkonium chloride? Are those greater or less than those asdociated with using one mop?

user32564567 · 02/01/2020 16:09

People have bathroom slippers??

PatricksRum · 02/01/2020 18:15

@Easilyanxious I would go over all floors in the house, and wash anything that feet have come into contact with, bedding, slippers etc but that's just me.

dementedpixie · 02/01/2020 18:17

But why???

Greenpop21 · 02/01/2020 18:22

What???

Greenpop21 · 02/01/2020 18:23

Stop worrying. Do you eat off the floor? Who is pooing on your toilet floor anyway?

Ragwort · 02/01/2020 18:27

But surely your feet come into contact with your slippers every time you wear them? Do you wash them every day? (Never washed slippers in my life). Honestly Mumsnet is obsessed with cleanliness and germs Hmm.

Greenpop21 · 02/01/2020 18:28

Isn’t it? I’ve been on here a lot more than usual thanks to time off and I’m seriously thinking it’s not the place for me. Some very strange posts.

Dangerfloof · 02/01/2020 18:30

FWIW I have one mop and one bucket, both not often used by choice.
Unless your preparing food on the floor or licking your slippers or socks, I see no real problem.
Especially as you used disinfectant each time.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 02/01/2020 18:47

Most people (including myself) have said it will be fine.

I am one of the duplicate mop people and also have a cleaner. I have to provide the mops for her and supervise what she is doing 🤔. It's really not unusual to have more than one mop - every cleaner that I have has expected that

The best option for infection control is to have two mops. That is a fact. There is an increase risk of cross contamination of you don't. Everyone household's risk will be statistically different dependent on lots of factors so it's not possible to extrapolate. If you have a crawling baby and use the same mop to mop a bathroom floor with a cat litter tray in it, that will present a higher risk. What it is possible to say in this case is the risk of cross contamination is probably very small. What is of more importance is not using a steam mop on LVT as that will definitely damage it

Greenpop21 · 02/01/2020 18:56

But what about walking from room to room? This is absolutely ridiculous!
