How long to tidy and clean your house to show home standard?

I know most of us are not at show home most of the time, but how long would it get you to take the place properly tidy and deep cleaned?

I reckon I could spend 8 hours a day 7 days a week and be done by Christmas at this rate!

Probably less than two days if that was emptying every cupboard and cleaning cupboards and contents and rearranging. If not opening cupboards and drawers I could have the place immaculate in four hours. As it stands now anyone could come and look round and I wouldn't be uncomfortable.

Fakeflowersaremynewnormal · 04/11/2019 15:57

I'm thinking about 3 years and it would include a lot of decorating and some building work.

Beamur · 04/11/2019 15:58

Never if my DH continues to live here.

SallyAnne89 · 04/11/2019 16:00

I'm at the point now I don't know whether to clean the walls or get the painters in my kids have destroyed the place. I can get it all hoovered and looking presentable ish in a couple of hours, but that would be with just bunging everything in boxes, bags, cupboards etc.

I really want it actually clean, tidy and organised but it feels as though that is just never going to happen.

it doesnt matter how much I clean my house it still looks shabby (needs new bathroom and kitchen, new floors/carpets, conservatory needs knocking down and redoing, needs new windows but its rented and the landlord is in no hury to do any of that and to move to a similar property would be almost double the rent!)
does really get me down that even when i clean it still looks shit.

SallyAnne89 · 04/11/2019 16:06

I would blame the house but honestly it looked lovely before we moved in Blush

I reckon we've got double as many people and 10x as much stuff as it suits though

*@SallyAnne89 that's exactly how I felt about 6 months ago. I've been working hard on keeping the place tidy (check out the spotless app) but I knew that as soon as you opened a cupboard it was total mess. So I've just worked on it slowly over months a task at a time. Made sure everything has a home so drawers don't fill with random crap. Then doing the kitchen by doing a drawer/cupboard each week etc

That said, my attic is full of utter crap so not sure it'll ever be truly organised until that's cleared out!*

Beamur · 04/11/2019 16:07

My house just has too much stuff in it.
I have a major declutter every now and again which helps.
I'm not overly motivated by it being perfect though.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/11/2019 16:08

Honestly the way it is right now no amount of cleaning will get it to show home standard. I desperately need to redecorateGin

RexDangerVest · 04/11/2019 16:09

Give up and advertise it as 'a project'

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/11/2019 16:10

Me and husband working together would take half a day to clean. The problem is we have some decorating that needs doing and cleaning won't hide that. My husband is an excellent cleaner and I am unsurpassed in pointing out what needs doing.

campion · 04/11/2019 16:12

I'm somewhere between Fakeflowersaremynewnormal and Beamur but have got the builders in atm so at least have an excuse. There may then be ONE room to show home standard depending on my ability to keep everyone else and their stuff out!
The rest of the house is pretty clean but has so much stuff that nobody really needs but seem unable to part with, that I flip between determination to 'get it sorted' and mental exhaustion.
I do dream of show home standard though!

TheQueef · 04/11/2019 16:14

Quicker burning mine down and rebuilding.
I have low standards though so I don't care Smile

Skyejuly · 04/11/2019 16:15

Hmm 3 days

Grasspigeons · 04/11/2019 16:17

I think maybe 2 solid working weeks. Its superficially ok but id need to hire carpet cleaners, wash windows, dry clean the curtains to get it looking sparkly. And hire a skip.

campion · 04/11/2019 16:18

TheQueef Grin
I once read an article by a woman whose house burned down while she was on holiday. Once she'd got over the shock, she said it was very liberating as she then only got things she really wanted.
Not recommending it really!

SallyAnne89 · 04/11/2019 16:18

It's three fold really.

  1. I need to get into better routines for a lifetime
  2. I need to massively de clutter for when we move
  3. I need to leave it in the same pristine condition we found it in

Private rental and I don't have to get it rented out I can just leave when I find somewhere new (well, with a months notice). Problem is I think it's going to take me 6 months to get ready to, and I want to be able to move as soon as we find somewhere else. And I'm sick of just moving the mess!

Can't afford to get a storage unit, professional cleaners or to lose any of my deposit either! Feels impossible

OP posts:
Mumista · 04/11/2019 16:21

I would love to put all of our stuff into a storage unit for a few days and pay someone to come and paint it and clean it to an immaculate standard. I know that 24 hours later it would be a shitheap again.

oohnicevase · 04/11/2019 16:21

About 2 hours ... I Keep on top of it .. I hate it when everything is messy and dirty . ( and no I don't have ocd before anyone says anything )

areyoubeingserviced · 04/11/2019 16:23

Probably a couple of days
I am a bit obsessed about cleaning , so my house is quite clean .

Froggledoggleoggle · 04/11/2019 16:26

About a week. I'm in a typical 2 up 2 down.
3 days if I didn't need the bedrooms redecorating.

lettersbyowl · 04/11/2019 16:28

A couple of days if that included carpet cleaning, external fascia and window cleaning etc as mentioned above. One day if not. It's pretty clean and tidy!

fluffedup · 04/11/2019 16:31

Years. And years.
