Starting a deep clean today

Making a thread so I can post my progress lol!

I have a couple of days coming up where I can really give the house a good clean/tidy. Need to get it done before term starts again and the madness begins.

Planning to be ruthless with clutter and clean everything too! Starting with the sideboard once I have had a shower - stuff in there that's been there for years and is never touched. It's clearly not needed!

All welcome to join me if you wish and I will update in a bit Grin

I'm doing this, bit have two weeks starting with bedrooms first.

All clothes to be sorted/chucked/donated and re tidied
All clutter cleared

Then it's the study

Then the living room

Then the utility area

Then the shed of doooooooooooom

Then the car will get sorted.

Might get to the loft....

PumpkinPie2016 · 16/08/2019 09:36

Ooh good luck 001 - fingers crossed we will both be very productive.

My dear of spiders keeps me out of the sheds - that's DH's domain 😂

Fear not dear!

Well, my sideboard and book shelf are now cleared out and cleaned! Took a bit longer because I had to make an important phone call which took ages.

Least it's a start though!

Well done

00100001 · 16/08/2019 16:12

good start!

It all begins tomorrow morning for me!

Mumpkind · 16/08/2019 19:10

Thank you for the inspiration Pumpkin.

I have a very ambitious (for me) clear/clean/reorganise plan motivated by family visitors arriving in a couple of weeks.

I am going to start tonight!

RezCowgirl · 16/08/2019 22:21

The rubbish weather predicted for weekend is prompting me into a deep clean this weekend.
Big lot of laundry, sort out of the wardrobes and a trip to the charity shop is in order first thing in the morning. Then I'll tackle the bathroom I think.

Chickaletta16 · 16/08/2019 22:35

I need to declutter / clean and reorganize my entire house and literally don't know where to start Confused I have four young children and want them to have routine, know where all their things are and for me to be a much better mum - but I am so disorganised I just don't know where to start .I am Bipolar and due to periods of instability haven't really been able to get on top of so many things. It doesn't help that my home is a small 3 bedroom end of terrace either and there is not much room. Any ideas on good organisation and routines for children would be very gratefully received x

RubbingHimSweetly · 17/08/2019 00:10

Can I join? I'm currently decluttering like mad for a big house move to a new country... it's scary how the prospect of lugging everything with you focuses your mind!😂 I've been doing the basement and upstairs cupboards... trying to get everything out of the corners and into the daylight 😱

cikecaka · 17/08/2019 13:08

Chickaletta, I can somewhat identify with your post. My 4 arent so little, though, and I suffer depression, but I live in aa small 3 bed terrace house.
i just get overwhelmed by it all, for example I have just washed and dried all the dishes but have left a pot steeping. (instead of just washing it)

i want to be organised, stressful mornings looking for stuff for school etc, leave me exhausted for the rest of the day.

For today, i would like a clean kitchen and sitting room,

Chickaletta16 · 17/08/2019 13:57

@cikecaka thank you for your response. Depression and other mental health conditions are so debilitating - even the smallest of tasks can take ages or seem impossible to do. My children are 10, 8 6 and 4. I am feeling quite pleased as I've been cleaning since 9am and the entire house is now tidy - I'm going to tackle the declutrering and organising step by step. If you would like to pm me you are welcome - perhaps we can help each other and share ideas x

Fresh01 · 17/08/2019 22:40

I have 4 children and have found it easiest to have a chair in the hall. School coats go on it as they come in front school, school shoes next it, school bags next it when homework done. Then all kit bags and instruments there after tea. It is in the area under the stairs so we don’t fall over the huge heap that ends up there. But means in the morning one glance in one area means you know everything is got.

We have a small utility room but we put a high shelf above the door. Any spare bags the kids had then other £2.50 small backpacks from Decathalon were got. Every activity the kids do that has kit goes in a specific bag on the high shelf after use/washing. It has saved searching the house for pe shorts, gum shields or football socks. Only the eldest can reach the shelf themselves using a stool but worth that minor hassle for the time saved.

We have had a busy summer so lots needing cleared and sorted when the kids go back to school 😬

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 17/08/2019 22:53

I have an area in the playroom with hooks on the wall. The kids' coats, schoolbags and swimming bags ALWAYS hang on the hooks. There's a crate underneath with hats and scarves in winter or sunhats in summer. Their shoes go in the bottom of a wardrobe in there as well, and their big karate bag goes on top of it. They know exactly where everything goes and I absolutely insist that everything be put in the right place every time, so we almost never have to run around like headless chickens wondering where things are.

DH is taking the kids to visit his folks for a couple of days tomorrow so I might take the opportunity to do a good clean in peace!

RubbingHimSweetly · 17/08/2019 22:57

I've dug out my youngest's T-shirt drawer today and got rid of 50% of his T-shirt's. Some he told me he doesn't like, others verging on too small. Tomorrow is trackies and jumpers. Also need to sort out all our ski gear which we aren't taking home as wont get to use it. Feeling very overwhelmed right now, the amount of stuff we have doesn't seem to be going down 🙁

YorkshireLawyer · 18/08/2019 06:56

I’m in. Going to try to sort out the house one or two rooms at a time to try to declutter and deep clean before the DC go back to school. We’ve just had the kitchen and bathroom decorated so both feel so much cleaner and fresher than they did before which I want to maintain! However, having just returned from holiday and DS1 having recently had a birthday, the rest of the house is a bit of a shit tip, hidden under a mountain of laundry and birthday presents! Will start today with our and the DCs’ bedrooms.

Chottie · 18/08/2019 07:07

I've recently stopped work and now I finally have the time to sort and declutter the whole house.

On the surface it looks ok, but I have cupboards and drawers which really need sorting out. It is a bit overwhelming.

However, I am going to do it area by area in a systematic way rather than a grasshopper approach :)

Kyvia · 18/08/2019 08:05

Are you still cleaning OP? I came on here looking for an accountability thread to join for day cleaning. My home is disgusting. No offspring to blame, but pets, too-long working hours and MH problems. Today, I have one day off, DP is away. I want to start the next week just feeling better about my home environment, this is supposed to be my sanctuary. I want it back.

I bought a carpet washer to deep clean the carpets of pet smells.... thing is it’s so noisy to use I usually only have free time early morning or late at night and don’t want to disturb neighbours, so it’s sat there for weeks. I need to start by clearing floors/hoovering to prepare for carpet washing at a more sociable hour today. But feels pointless hoovering until everything else is neat and clean. All feels overwhelming, there’s not one corner I can look where there’s not something that needs sorting/tidying/cleaning/finding a place to live/just throwing away.

On that positive note going to make a start somewhere and set a timer for 30 mins. Hope other people facing uphill cleaning struggles today are out there!

RoseMartha · 18/08/2019 08:22

I need to do this as house will need to be put on market in not too distant future but I cant start it really until the dc are back in school.

IVEgottheDECAF · 18/08/2019 08:26

I have been doing some deep cleaning over past couple weeks, possible nesting kicking in (37+3)

So far i have done both living rooms, the main bathroom and started my bedroom!

Alsonification · 18/08/2019 08:32

Can I also join? My wardrobe looks like the gateway to hell right now. I also need to clear out old school books of ds’s from last year to make room for the new ones.
The under stairs press is a disgrace & I’m not even going to think about the shed & the attic right now. Confused
Will start on school books & my wardrobe today I think.

Good luck everyone.

AmateurSwami · 18/08/2019 08:43

@Fresh01 just on decathlon’s website- what a revelation! Such good prices!

Fresh01 · 18/08/2019 09:07

@AmateurSwami the tiny ruck- sacks are a great size for kids. Fit a swim costume, goggles and towel no problem. We also use them on days out/holidays for adults or kids to carry as they fit water, sun cream, phone, purse etc without being so big you stuff them full and can’t carry them😊

Kyvia · 18/08/2019 09:10

Half an hour has morphed into an hour and feel like I’m getting into the swing of things! Having to stop to get the aminals their brekkies.
Have thrown away visible obvious rubbish in all rooms, deep cleaned cat litter trays which helps with the ambience immediately, ‘cleared the decks’ in living room & hall and got the roomba going to start on the carpets down there. Upstairs have gathered all dirty clothes to bags to go down for washing, stripped the bed. Got all windows & back door open and some scented candles lit. I WILL wake up tomorrow in a nice place to be.

Hope others are feeling the Sunday blitz clean spirit too!

Kyvia · 18/08/2019 12:19

Ok. Keeping accountable.
Downstairs hall & living room vacuumed & carpets washed. Mammoth task but amazing, it smells so much fresher now with properly clean carpets. Horrible black stuff coming out of them! I am thrilled with the new machine. Same cost as hiring a rug doctor for 48hrs but I have it for ever, it was much easier/less fiddly to use as well, I will plan to wash every carpet every 3-4 months I think, ever so satisfying. So much dirt gone from my home Grin
First load of laundry is in the dryer and second load on. Washing up done & pet bowls all given a proper scrub. Going to clean the bedroom surfaces now & put clean bedding on (have learnt from past experience to do this earlier in the day on cleaning blitz days; otherwise I just collapse in a heap and don’t want to do it later.
