Motivation to tidy

petal2019 · 18/06/2019 02:25

I have woken at 1 am and thought would get on and tidy the whole house. Feel so defeated by it though....it feels like an endless task that will never go away. Find it completely overwhelming and it is stopping me from getting much more important things done. However you cant live in a complete tip. Thought I would ask for some support in getting through it.Does anyone have any advice?

Have to add however, that it is now 2.25 and I haven't got anything done yet.... but now.... I feel a bit more accountable. Set the timer and go at half the sitting room!
on your marks!

Good luck!

Could do with some motivation for tidying myself

petal2019 · 18/06/2019 03:34

Ok... half the sitting room sorted ... tidied and hoovered. Took 18.38 mins. Now sitting room half number 2. ...tidied and wet hoovered the rug....Which took 17.51 mins altogether....... with a few breaks for texts. Now in a minute I am going to tackle the kitchen... now 3.31 hrs.
I have a very small galley type kitchen.... the surfaces easily become so cluttered. I don't know why I am so useless at actually getting housework done... is it the same for anyone else. I am so unmotivated.... I find it so boring and so endless... Ok... kitchen here I come!! (sorry Im sure anyone reading this is finding it very boring.... unless perhaps they are in the same position and fancy doing it together? fancy a race?!!

See untidiness in shades of black. Starting with black work down through to white.
Works for me Smile

petal2019 · 18/06/2019 03:57

Now 3.57 and I am still prevaricating. think will just go to bed!

Well done at least you’ve now started

MikeUniformMike · 18/06/2019 09:27

In the same position.
Well done, at least you have started. I haven't.

laurabmummyof3 · 18/06/2019 12:16

Right petal, you need Marie Kondo in your life. Use that sitting time to watch her show on Netflix. She helps people declutter and organise. It’s so motivating. I felt similarly to you at the beginning of the year then I watched her show. Since I have decluttered cleaned and organised every room in my house. I have taken multiple bags to charity/baby bank/kids school and the tip. I have sold things I no longer want or use on gumtree and at car boot sales, and used the money to buy paint and some new light fittings/cushions. Everything looks and feels so much better and I finally feel able to cope with the items in my home. The method has very specific ways of storing clothes etc and this has helped my older children to look after their things. If you don’t have NF look it up on youtube or buy her book from amazon. Go do it now!🍀💕

Thanks for all your encouragement. That sounds great Laura b... I do have netf. I think... I will check it out.
I did actually manage to get the kitchen and bathroom done too and am now working on the attic and my bedroom. Well mike.... im not really in a position to advise but I find it quite fun to time myself and note it down and next time try and beat my time on that room!! sounds mega silly I know but it is helping a bit! best wishes and good night!

what do you mean shades of black? do you pick up black things first? ````what about other colours? interesting idea!

OP posts:
Monty27 · 21/06/2019 03:41

petal2019 I mean in terms of the jobs. Black is overwhelming. You take it down to different shades of black. The more progress you make the lighter the shade becomes. Until you can see through the haze and white is do-able. One shade at a time. I hope that makes sense. It worked for me. Flowers

Aquamarine1029 · 21/06/2019 04:02

If you're finding keeping your home tidy that overwhelming, it means one thing; you have too much clutter and useless tat. It's time for a major purge. You will be very happy with the result.

petal2019 · 23/06/2019 05:44

I shall try that Monty! Thanks!

Back from camping trip...the previously tidy sitting room from last week is now full of piles of camping stuff etc.. far more overwhelming than before. SO.... going to try out MOntys method of tidying from the worst to the easiest. I think I am going to break it down into small areas and see if that helps. Start with table.
I have 2 hours to complete!!! Anyone fancy a race?

petal2019 · 23/06/2019 06:44

6.10 Done the sofa..
Now the table 6.20
Now the rug 6.25
now the staircase 6.27
now the piano 6.31
now the little table6.43
now the space in front of the TV 6.47
now the dresser 6.50
now a little break. Smile Brew

I wonder if anyone would be interested in occasional virtual shared tidying sessions?!! I think I would be more motivated if I could do it in parallel with someone else? Anyone fancy a tidying buddy?

OP posts:
petal2019 · 23/06/2019 06:59

Absolutely!! Im already starting it!! Now have 3 huge sacks to get rid of!

I recommend the Organised Mum Method. Google it - she has a blog and FB group. There’s a Bootcamp to get your house in order over the course of a week and then daily tasks to keep on top of it all. Good luck!

Eminybob · 23/06/2019 07:45

I was just coming on to recommend the organised mum method but see I’ve been beaten to it.
It really is very helpful.

petal2019 · 23/06/2019 07:54

7.07...start again....just one hour......
round table 7.16
floorspace by door 7.20
hallway floor 7.25
pile in front of armchair 7.33
pile on the armchair 7.50
packing all the camping stuff away for next time 8.00
pause for the moment.

Hi Petal,
I’m the same - I think it’s true it’s tooooo much stuff - I’ve spent the past 10 years moving stuff from room to room. I have watched Marie Kondo - it did motivate me a bit and I need to watch it again.
I’ve have realised that not cleaning regularity which I don’t do creates a time when it needs a massive clean.
Good luck.

petal2019 · 25/06/2019 07:25

Hi Mary1935. Do you want to virtually tidy/clean together? Im finding it really helpful to note down here what Im doing as I do it.... Id definitely be on for virtual buddying. I think the principals of MK are really good... I intend to try and apply them. Best wishes Petal.

petal2019 · 07/01/2020 05:34

Ok... am in a terrible state.... the house has never been SO MESSY!
Just looked at organised mum website and it is not going to cut the mustard.... the problems is not so much cleaning ... it is just seeing a way forward to cleaning.... everywhere is so topsy turvy..

SO.... I will just have to do the pre organised mum boot camp preparation!!!
The aim today is to tidy the whole house (except the attic!!)
and clean the floors downstairs.

Step 1. 5.33
Tidy the floors.
