One drawer; one identified space a day - anyone want to join my small daily decluttering mission

I have realised that despite doing the odd clear outs during the year, i need to keep on top of things more often, otehrwise no sooner have i finished de-cluttering than drawers are full again, cupboards bulging.

So my plan for the rest of year is to do just ONE space a day - that could be a shelf, a box, a drawer,

Yeterday i started with pens/pencils/ that are lying everywhere. i threw them all into one big bag, and then sorted them out - dropped off a huge bag of pens to our local play centre, and now have one neat box of pens.

Today i am going to do the box that holds tupperware and reccyle every goddamm piece that doesnt have a lid, or lids that a re floating around.

anyone want to join me?

I’m trying to do this but even “one space a day” feels a bit ambitious tbh Blush

My current target is the “in trays” in the kitchen. Which in theory would hold a few magazines, and some labels and bits that are nice to have handy.
In reality of course they are a towering pile of paperwork, receipts, stuff from last Christmas ShockBlush clothes that need mending and loads of other crap.

But I WILL get them cleared!

KnitterOfSocks · 17/05/2019 12:34

One space a day sounds totally doable. My house is my enemy at the moment.

Today shall be the table by the arm of my sofa. It's PILED with crap. Most of which can be chucked. I just haven't done it.

iwantavuvezela · 17/05/2019 12:58

Yah - two possible people to keep me company!

It is doable - and my thoughts are that it allows for a through clearning out of that small section!

Good luck with the arm of the sofa knitterofsccks

judgerulesnutterbutter - you can start with one tray!

I shall take photos...

Chickenpie1 · 17/05/2019 14:43

That's a great idea. I'm in too! Got to start somewhere, the chaos distresses and overwhelmed me!!! I am away til Monday though so will have to start then!!

iwantavuvezela · 17/05/2019 17:28

This is my starting point - all pens sorted, and sifted.
Tupperware completed

I'm in. I am still trying to declutter from last year.
One pen pot next to computer desk.

Bowerbird5 · 17/05/2019 20:31

That looks very organised now.

iwantavuvezela · 17/05/2019 22:31

Thanks bowerbird - preens. Tupperware now done. Might tackle a bowl tomorrow that is just filled with literal bits and bobs . A small one for Saturday!

JudgeRulesNutterButter · 20/05/2019 09:23

Didn’t manage my in trays on Friday. Today is the day!!!

iwantavuvezela · 21/05/2019 12:31

I look forward to photographic evidence!

I have done the box under the sink - you know the one - full of nothing! And for the weekend I tackled something that has been annyoing me - a bowl that had collected a pile of small rubbish - so either recycled or put things away - so that space is clear.

I realise how much junk there is everywehre - but then i think one space a day means that over the next 3 months over 90 spaces will have been cleared.

Today i aim to tackle a biggish tray that is on one of our desks and is filled to the brim. Want to totally either get rid of everything or place whatever is in that tray where it needs to go.

Jacqattacq · 21/05/2019 22:27

I’d like to join in with this too. I am an absolute nightmare for mess and clutter despite my best efforts. I cleared out and organised the cupboard under the sink a few weeks ago and felt like motherfucking Shaft, so I really need to do this to more spaces. I will tackle the main food cupboard tomorrow Halo

iwantavuvezela · 22/05/2019 08:43

Thanks for joining! Need a few more people to keep motivated. Although it seems a little, I keep thinking that in 3 months time so much would have been done. Yesterday I packed / threw / recycled an entire box away that had been sitting on a desk filled with odds and ends. Today I will tackle a space in the utility which is now just stuffed.

The good thing as you tidy is that more space becomes available and you stop getting pissed off not able to find anything.

I have found that by mentally noting the night before the space I will do the next day means I have more chance of doing it!

Passmeabrew · 22/05/2019 14:08

I really need to join in but I'm just not sure where to start! I shall have a think today and pick a few small spaces. I tend to be all or nothing wanting to blitz the house but I find it really hard to be tidy, I literally attract mess, so this might help

Jacqattacq · 22/05/2019 16:03

I attract mess too so you’re in good company passmeabrew. I seem to have some vital tidiness chromosome missing. My bedroom is a disgrace - I tidy it but a day later there’s shit everywhere again. I have no idea how it happens or how people keep things tidy. I did a test years ago that shows I have poor executive function which I think it the reason I find it so hard.

Anyway, I sorted the food cupboard today and am impressed with myself. I bought loads of cheap plastic baskets to section all the different food into and that seems to be the key to success.

Jacqattacq · 22/05/2019 16:03

Tomorrow: the crockery/glasswear/general kitchen crap that needs a home cupboard.

iwantavuvezela · 23/05/2019 10:24

welcome passmeabrew - yesterday i tackled an area called utility! I realise why sometimes i dont tidy as it felt overwhelming - but following on from the one space a day philosphy i managed to tackle two bits to it - there is much work to be done here! I just ignored the rest of it - for now - knowing tht slowly slowly i will get there!

I have also started a big bag where i put things that just have nowhere to go - i will regret this - but when after 3 months - thats my goal to keep going for - i will sort out that bag!

jacqattacq well done on sorting the food cupboard - yo uare right - small identified baskets / boxes / containers definately help! Almost every shoe box i have is used as a storage container.

Jacqattacq · 23/05/2019 14:20

iwantavuvezela I totally get it - tidying just seems so HARD and it’s far easier to ignore it completely. Some people can obviously do it naturally without thinking but for others it’s a constant effort. Well done so far and I like that the big bag of crap will me the last task on the list.

I have surpassed myself - I decided to do two cupboards in the kitchen instead of one because I’m away tomorrow so wouldn’t get hand to do it, and I ended up doing the entire kitchen! It took hours but I am so relieved that I’ve done it and it feels so calm and organised in there now.

No tidying tomorrow as am working away but will set myself the task of the dining room table (minor as only recently done) and the pile of crap at the bottom of the stairs for over the weekend.

iwantavuvezela · 23/05/2019 14:38

Well done jacqattacq here's some Flowers - something that will not add to anything that has to be tidied !!!
enjoy your weekend and see you back on Monday -
I'm procrastinating - so weill declare upfront the space to tidy is a slim small drawer in a cabinet that is filled with old lanyards & other stuff that has no home - all going to be turfed out! Small job, might try to do something else if i feel motivated!

OP posts:
Passmeabrew · 23/05/2019 21:01

I have failed at the first hurdle and still boy got anywhere! Tomorrow isn't looking likely as its a full on day so I'm going to have to make up at the weekend. Glad I'm not only the only one who attracts mess, missing the tidy gene is a good way to describe it! I actually prefer a tidy house I just really struggle to maintain in and I seem to be very inefficient when I tidy - what others achieve in 20mins can take me an hour or more. Not helped by being easily distracted!

Annasgirl · 24/05/2019 11:20

Inspired by you guys I did my "clutter" or "Monica" cupboard yesterday. It had gotten to the point where when it was opened something random fell out of it.

It is now clear and lovely but I give DH about 2 weeks to mess it up again with his tat.

iwantavuvezela · 24/05/2019 14:36

annasgirl I know th feeling - I am vigilantly guarding my cleaned spaces!

Today I identified a drawer filled with cd's - we all use Spotify so I put them in a bag and they will go in the loft - they're DH's so not mine to give away - but I used the drawer to put all the games and cards that were cluttering a table in the living space. - I a, starting to see chinks of tidiness!

Slowly but surely .....

Annasgirl · 25/05/2019 14:00

Oh well done @iwantavuvezela - little by little. I came on here to be inspired to do one more item to-day - have spent over an hour reading this site instead of cleaning!!!

RosemaryRemember · 25/05/2019 14:36

I wonder if I could join you? This would be a useful habit for me: it's achievable.

I have started by doing my bookshelves (way back in March!) I got rid of a lot and organised what was left. However I find it hard to keep momentum going. A little a day will I hope help me keep making progress until I get another surge of energy..

Today I will declutter and clean the computer table.

(I will also reset a shelf that has gone rogue with dumped files, stationery and more. The positive is once you've done it everything does have a place and is quicker to restore to order!)

MightyAtlantic · 25/05/2019 14:39

Can I join? My house is so messy, and I want to get it sorted for summer. Today I'm going to tidy out two large drawers of junk and use the space to rehome the spare bedding.
