Really bad limescale of shower door

mckenzie · 13/05/2019 22:19

I’ve tried

Viakal
Vinegar and water
Lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda
Bleach

All to no avail.

Do I need to be patient and choose one method and do it daily for 10 days or something?

Or is there a better option you can recommend?

TIA

Soak kitchen roll in the Viakal and leave on overnight?

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 13/05/2019 22:21

WD-40 worked on mine. Spray on and leave for about 10.min before washing off

1vandal2 · 13/05/2019 22:24

Harpic toilet cleaner. Don the marigolds and scrub.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 13/05/2019 22:32

Equal parts vinegar and washing up liquid. Here in Canada I use the original Blue Dawn.

mckenzie · 14/05/2019 12:56

Thank you so much for the replies.

I don’t think the kitchen roll soak in viakal will work as the paper will slide to the floor.

I’ve got WD 40 here so I could try that first.

I’ve got Domestos toilet cleaner. Would that suffice 1vandal2?

Any particular vinegar Moose?

If you're gonna use harpic, keep it away from any metal fixings... I managed to strip the chrome off some taps I was trying to descale with harpic once! It's due to the hydrochloric acid attacking the metal; it works great on the toilet though.

My best descaling product for things I'm afraid to use harpic on is Cillit Bang.

Tunt · 14/05/2019 13:10

Cilit bang purple and orange. Spray on, wipe round with a sponge and leave it for as long as you can. Rinse off, squeegee the excess water off then polish with a dry e-cloth

StickOfRhubarb · 14/05/2019 13:11

I’ve stripped a line scaled tap with white vinegar before. I had to soak it for days and days it was so bad.

Are you rubbing the stuff on the limescale?

MariaNovella · 14/05/2019 13:14

Have you tried 16% vinegar gel? For several days in a row?

6utter6ean · 14/05/2019 13:17

Cillit bang works well and smells lovely

Maracaibo · 14/05/2019 13:20

Having recently done this here is my method.
You'll need something abrasive such as a white or brown 'scotchbrite' scourer or ideally 0000 wire wool. Use this to remove everything from the glass. An abrasive cream helps here e.g. ceramic hob cleaner.
Once 'decontaminated' clean with a glass cleaner e.g. Mr Muscle or Nilco are good.
Spray with a polish to help the water run off.
Keep on top of it and squeegee after every shower using something like this www.amazon.co.uk/Aqualux-1160001-Showerblade/dp/B004Q4VGAO?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I've just had a water softener fitted as I had enough of the above.

plantingandpotting · 14/05/2019 13:38

@6utter6ean it smells delish doesn't it! Like apples 😳

bebeboeuf · 15/05/2019 08:16

Collin bang and a wire scourer

ooonicorn · 15/05/2019 08:20

Limelite. Best stuff ever.

Skyejuly · 16/05/2019 11:49

Pink stuff

SpamChaudFroid · 16/05/2019 12:13

~Kilrock Gel!~ It's like a thick gloop that you paint on. I find wrapping the teated area in cling film makes it work extra well. Leave it overnight, the cling film stops moisture evaporating, so the gel can do its thing for longer.

SpamChaudFroid · 16/05/2019 12:14

treated Blush

mckenzie · 16/05/2019 21:53

I used Kilrock gel on a test area today. I did it three times and it's made not an ounce of difference Sad

Tomorrow I shall try the Harpic. I do now have 0000 wire wool too but using that plus Cif again made no difference at all. It's as if the limescale is inside the glass!

You need HG Hageson Blue professional Limescale Remover. Works very quickly with no effort involved. You can get it from Robert Dyas or any hardware store.

Dafspunk · 16/05/2019 22:05

When I moved into a new rental flat, I thought the shower screen was opaque. No, my SO scraped the limescale off with a razor blade.

Naughty1205 · 16/05/2019 22:14

Haven't read full thread but am a cleaning product fiend and always looking for the holy grail of cleaning products for shower door. I bought a Mrs Hinch (?) green cloth for shiny surfaces like mirrors and glass. No other product needed. I have to say it is beyond amazing. Use it damp and that cloudy limescale just goes. I have washed all the windows in the house with this cloth and telling everyone about it cause I don't have a life! I wouldn't mind but I have loads of different cloths for different purposes but this is on another level. Definitely recommend it.

runoutofnamechanges · 16/05/2019 22:23

Have you tried the gel version of Viakal and left it on overnight covered with clingfilm? Slices of lemon or cotton wool soaked in vinegar clingfilmed on overnight works wonders but I have no idea how you would do that on an entire shower door Grin

I suspect, if it's so bad, the only solution is time. Every time you clean it a layer will come off. That said, there comes a point where a new door is cheaper than all the cleaning products...

mommybear1 · 17/05/2019 13:43

@Naughty1205 my kind of fellow cleaner Wink can you tell me what that cloth is please? I've been using ecloth for glass but I'm not sure it's quite cutting the mustard Grin

Naughty1205 · 17/05/2019 14:15

Mommy bear let me look it up for you. Seriously I've never used something like it.
