Il admit it I fell hook line and sinker into buying every single cleaning product on the market (slight exaggeration ) and spraying every single surface in my home with a different product and smell , which ended in me having a headache 24/7 . Spending far too much money a week on cleaning products I don't even need and aren't necessary.

I'd also like to point out certain accounts the way they clean and have extremely tidy houses gave me extreme anxiety about the way my house looked . I have a nice house (I think anyway) but I didn't have one of "their" houses and it got me really down , striving for perfection in my home that I was never going to reach because it isn't possible especially when you have kids .

This past week I've stopped buying all the products and using them and my head feels so much better and so does my bank balance .

Now I've had that rant 😂 what is best for making your house smell nice ? Which isn't dangerous for the environment or our health ? Apart from opening windows for fresh air . I have two kids in nappies so the lingering smell of poop happens on a daily basis and I also own a dog that likes to break wind a lot , always conscious of my house stinking !

Good.

I use method products, bleach in the loo and generally bicarbonate of soda and apple cider vinegar 😂

lahdeedah2019 · 30/04/2019 20:06

Thank you !

Opening your windows is the most important thing to do I think. (and Method products do smell nice!)

BarbarAnna · 30/04/2019 21:54

The Method Ylang Ylang daily shower smells lush. I find the Splosh Watermelon kitchen cleaner fantastic (and is refillable) and would also echo bleach down the loo when required and opening windows. Other than that, I only use natural or unscented products. Oh and washing drying on the radiators smells nice!

Poppins2016 · 01/05/2019 02:08

If we've cooked a particularly smelly dinner, I cut a slice of lemon and boil it in a small amount of water. I sometimes add a drop of clary sage (left over from end of pregnancy!), which I love. Oil burners are also useful.

TheWashingMachine · 01/05/2019 02:34

All those chemicals were bad for you, your family and the environment, well done for stopping. Halo

I personally have a phobia of "fake" smells, it's lovely for your home to have its own smell and just get in lots of fresh air.

Goldensunnydays81 · 01/05/2019 02:44

Yes def all those chemicals are bad for you and soo much money, I follow the organised mum method she is great! And moving away from all those harsh chemicals too with a practical easy cleaning routine Smile

AllGoodDogs · 01/05/2019 10:14

I've done the same. I use method and astonish products mostly. Damp dust with method all purpose (lavender at the moment) all through the house, and use their yellow floor cleaner on my laminate. Other than that I use the Astonish leather cleaner on my sofa, white vinegar on shiny stuff like mirrors, hob tops, TV, taps etc, and Astonish bathroom and kitchen spray. Cheapo bleach for down the loo.

I use soy wax melts in a burner in my kitchen every evening to make the house smell nice, no other plug ins or diffusers.

I went through a stage of buying loads of different brands and cloths etc but just use a load of cheap microfibers for everything bar the kitchen now.

picklemepopcorn · 01/05/2019 10:39

I barely use anything.
Open the windows when I can.
Cook bread and make coffee.
Use bicarb on any item that may be harbouring smells!

I'm infusing my vinegar with rosemary these days, because I've an abundance of it in the garden.
Lemon and orange peels get kept in the freezer, and used to make a kind of vinegar that smells great.

Whiskyagogo · 01/05/2019 12:08

Method and Splosh here Smile well mostly anyway!

Honestly the best thing to do is open windows, rather than masking smells with perfumed products.

DXBMermaid · 01/05/2019 12:54

I bought an Aroma Diffuser. Fill it with water and a few drops of essential oil. My current favourite combo is: sandelwood, rose geranium and peppermint for downstairs and lavender and bergamot upstairs. I'll turn it on when I put the children to bed so by the time I go to bed my bedroom smells great.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 01/05/2019 21:43

I use method products. No bleach in the house. Open windows for at least a few minutes every day.

Reed diffusers in kitchen and bathrooms.

House looks perfectly clean to us.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 01/05/2019 21:44

Should add, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda for freshening plugholes and washing machine.

dudsville · 01/05/2019 21:55

Piklemepopcirn, why do you infuse your vinegar with lavender? I have tonnes of lavender and i use vinegar on the house, mostly in the laundry. I would live to know what it's like and what you use that for.

dudsville · 01/05/2019 21:57

Ps, I've never hinched. I have three types of cleaning "cloths", a bathroom and kitchen cleaner, toilet bleach, and dusting spray. If we're home a window is open somewhere. That is enough!

PigOnStilts · 01/05/2019 22:10

Fairy liquid, bleach, flash, Window cleaner....that's all you need!

Theweasleytwins · 01/05/2019 23:37

I use Waitrose ecological cleaner, grapefruit and eucalyptus (so i could get my free coffee i generally brought cleaning stuff so using it up)

I do put a capful of zoflora in hot water/down the toilet if i have people coming over, think i read about that on here a while ago

I also like lidl general cleaning sprays, its like a blue colour and smells nice

picklemepopcorn · 02/05/2019 07:12

@dudsville I use rosemary because I have it! Lavender would work, I'm sure, though may not be very robust a scent.

I just push rosemary springs into the white vinegar bottle. I turn the bottle often so the sticking up bits get dowsed in vinegar regularly so they don't rot. Then I use the vinegar as normal. Try it with the remains of a bottle, see if you like it.

sackrifice · 02/05/2019 07:14

I can't even abide Method smells.

I use splosh and have done for years.

dudsville · 02/05/2019 07:28

Thanks pickle, i totally misread that. Rosemary sounds good and i also have a lot of that!

e1y1 · 03/05/2019 04:23

I do like Mrs Hinch and a certain other Scottish Gentleman's IG channel and I do like a good cleaning product.

BUT they do go way, way overboard, there simply isn't a need to spray every conceivable surface with every conceivable chemical at every opportunity.

Every one knows it really isn't good for you or the environment. Also what these guys do isn't really cleaning, cleaning of course washing and rinsing, wiping, dusting and shining. Not spraying a layer of chemical across a surface and leaving it there/rubbing it in (in fact, by definition that is uncleaning as it's putting something there that shouldn't be).

And that spraying neat fabric softener or putting fabric softener sheets inside cushions and pillows where you have your head on them breathing it in for 8 hours a night is absolutely ludicrous and so so bad. I'm really surprised Lenor hasn't released a disclaimer. FS is meant to be used with water and rinsed away.

I've always worried how Mrs Hinchs lovely dog isn't seriously ill from all the chemicals he must come in to contact with and I will be very interested if/how much changes when her baby arrives.
