Devise me a weekly shopping list that will total £50 please

I have to make £50 stretch this week and need to get £20 of petrol out of it.

I will need nappies as the washable ones don't fit anymore and obv. buying a size up won't be economical with a 3 year old as is just for nights.

So, the nappies cost approx £3.50. What else shall I buy?

I need cheese and goats milk.

I can shop at Asda, Tesco or Morrisons - Waitrose too but that won't make the money stretch much!

I can cook anything. Have a blender, an oven, grill and microwave.

Also, have broad beans from neighbour.

Inspire me!

do the roast chicken thing, make one last for several meals
devise recipes based largely on tesco value products eg tomatoes 9p, pasta 20p, tuna 30p etc

How many meals a day for how many people?

Sorry. Is 3 children aged 7, 5 (6 tomorrow) and 3 who don't go for huuuge portions at all. And me.

The eldest two will be having school dinner until Friday so only require breakfast and dinner/tea.

I probably only need another packet of water biscuits and I'll be fine!

We have quite a stash of cereals.

I'm quite up for making some nice things with veg/pulses that will last.

Ds2 does not do 'sauce' but will have to get on with it.

I could make do with £10 petrol but have two freecycle items to pick up which will eat into petrol a bit if I do collect this week.

Baked potatoes are a fave of mine - toppings?

i'm usually pretty good at this sort of thing but feel uninspired on the food front righ tnow due to having no appetite of my own.

tescos have 400gm cathedral city cheese on offer - 1.75 should last for ages, can make a quiche with it as well? some eggs and you have cheesey omlette.

Rice, pasta, mince, potatoes are very cheap foods and they go along way its amazing whay tou could do with the above and a couple of bags of mixed veg, tin of bean anf tomatoes

couscous - cheap and you can add all sorts to it - or make it into pudding with syrup, nuts and cinnamon

Do you think my prices sound right?

I would second getting a chicken (should do 3 dinners).

Would also get a bag of pasta/rice and a few baking potatoes.

Some veg (frozen can be quite cheap if you don't mind it).

Couple of tins of tuna and some sweetcorn with jacket potatoes. OR do baked beans and maybe cheese?

Most places do cheap jars of passata (about 90p for a big jar) - asda do at least. That goes well with an onion, frozen peas and maybe cheese on top with pasta.

Cheap packet of mince - use left over with left over passata, onions, peas, carrots and pasta.

Breakfast = toast/cereal.

Veg soup? Chuck in a few lentils as well? If you make a big pot and heat it up everyday you can have it for lunch as well.

HAve you got a local fruit&veg place - often they do it a bit cheaper than supermarket.

If you get smart price (or equivilant) mince you can get it for about £1.

Tesco and I think Asda also, sell 3kg bags of pasta for £1.00. Or they did the other week when I was in. it's more economical than the 19p bags

can't find my receipt for couscous - sorry can't remember price ! can't be very expensive though

milk in tescos 2 lots of 6 ltrs is £3.

do you have any markets close by? I find veg cheaper form them - althou not always the best

get the big bags of pasta - 3Kg for £1. and spahetti - 19p per pack I think it is, tescos tom sauce is as good as dolmio at 52p

(can you tell we go around with a calcualtor! lol) peaches, plums and necutrines are half price as well at the mo. how about corned beef hash?

I usually buy longlife goats milk at 86p a carton but can convert to cows if necessary!

Boil the chicken carcass to make a stock and it will help you get every last bit of chicken off the bone too. Add any leftover veg to make a broth. You can get packs of broth mix (dried pulses etc) for about 60p which will make the broth more filling.
What about making pancakes? The children will see this as a treat and they are cheap!

rice pudding is nice and filling, and cheap to make

sausage and lentil bake - pad it out with carrots and potatoes

my Mum does cauliflower cheese with ham and peas in, which is nice

I find my local shops are cheaper than the supermarkets.

cheese/pot pie - a friend of mine used to chop up some sauages in hers as well - you'll use less sausages then. or mum has hers with beans.

Roskva, do you have a recipe for sausage and lentil bake? Sounds yum.
Another idea for newlife..Sausage risotto was one of my student staples. Onion, sausage, rice, tinned toms, bit of stock if you've got it otherwise a bit of water, all cooked in one pan together. Gorgeous.
Corned beef hash was another student fave. I also sometimes used to have tinned tomatoes on toast for lunch, with a sprinkling of grated cheese if I had any.
