BOWLS: pasta bowls, cereal bowls, noodle bowls - are they necessary?!

We had a set of what I consider the 'platonic ideal' of bowls - white china, the exact right shape to eat cereal or a pile of pasta, chilli, soup or noodles etc. A decent width but still fairly deep. They were from Wilko and haven't survived the dishwasher terribly well.

Pretty sure they were these
www.wilko.com/assets/bWFzdGVyfHJvb3R8MjIwNzF8aW1hZ2UvanBlZ3xoYzIvaDA2Lzg4OTkyMzM4NDExODIuanBnfDgxMWVjZWRkZDliN2I0YzA1YzYwNzUwZWJkYzdhMjg2NzQ0NWRiZWZlNmZiYmZjYjBkMDI2MTY0MTE3NjJmZGQ=/0308474-4.jpg

ANYWAY, we went to look round John Lewis to replace them but everything is either a shallow, small 'cereal' bowl or a bigger 'noodle bowl' or 'pasta bowl' or a deep 'soup bowl'. It's hard to tell from the online photos exactly how big/deep they are. I understand why you might want different bowls for different food but is it really necessary? Do you have these and use them 'correctly'? I don't want to buy and find storage for 6 of two or three types of bowl if I'm not going to use them!

And if you've seen any with the EXACT dimensions (Grin) as the Wilko ones please let me know! I don't think they sell them now except as part of a whole dinner set!

We eat most of our meals out of bowls. I’d find it very annoying to only have one set from a washing-up point of view.

FamilyOfAliens · 19/04/2019 11:22

Also, M&S do nice plain white bowls but I can’t tell you if they’re the dimensions you want as that link is to an image of the bowl, with no product details.

misper · 19/04/2019 11:55

Yes, the product details on the wilko site are useless as they're for the whole dinner set... Will measure!

18.5 cm diameter
Approx 7 cm high

I love my Corelle crockery. Lightweight, stacks very compactly for storage and no problem in the dishwasher. Some of my Corelle is vintage from the 1970s and still excellent condition.

If you browse the website worldkitchen.co.uk they give the capacity and measurements of all the bowls. If you want plain white then probably the winter frost white would suit you.

FamilyOfAliens · 19/04/2019 12:57

These M&S ones are slightly shallower and have a slightly smaller diameter than your ones but you can buy them individually and they’re on offer at £3.20 each right now:

I have no idea, but I couldn't let "platonic ideal" pass without a GrinGrin

pastabest · 19/04/2019 18:56

I've had some from either Sainsbury's or Matalan reasonably recently that are similar but ever so slightly deeper I think. I'd happily eat pasta or cereal out of them though which like for you is an extremely important criteria for a bowl for me.

pastabest · 19/04/2019 19:32

Found them

Sainsburys

And they are currently on sale. 17.2cm diameter, no downward measurement but I assure you they are deep enough for cereal.

Wallabyone · 19/04/2019 20:03

I find pasta bowls really useful, as well as normal bowls which we use for cereal and soups. I bought mine from TKMaxx, they're Dartington and go with my plain white plates.

Shylo · 19/04/2019 20:08

I have plain white Denby bowls - pasta, cereal and noodle. Use the cereal and pasta bowls all the time for everything from breakfast to soup to dinner to dessert . The noodle bowls are a massive waste of time and sit in the cupboard unused

thenewaveragebear1983 · 19/04/2019 20:43

I'd eat anything from any bowl to be honest. We're about to buy some new ones and I'm going to go for the flatter, more 'plate' ish ones than the deep 'Oliver twist' porridge bowl type ones because our dishwasher cannot/will not cooperate and clean the deep ones properly unless they are flat on the bottom (meaning i can only fit about 6 things in!).

LittleBearPad · 19/04/2019 21:09

We have pasta bowls and cereal/soup bowls. Wouldn’t use them vice versa tbh.

Letthemysterybe · 19/04/2019 21:16

I couldn’t only have one bowl type. But I manage with 2. A deep bowl for cereal and soup and ice cream, and a shallow bowl for pasta (and stir fries and curry and most things I eat tbh). My deep bowls are some
nice patterned ones and the shallow ones are Ikea. But they also have not held up Well to the dishwasher and cutlery, so I’m thinking of upgrading to something denby maybe.

Shufflebumnessie · 19/04/2019 23:25

I'm fussy about my bowls, especially for cereal!! We only have one type and use them for everything.
I searched for ages and the only suitable ones I found were in Matalan. They measure 16 x 7. Not the exact same design as yours but might be worth a look.

FamilyOfAliens · 20/04/2019 00:04

Another place that’s brilliant for white porcelain crockery is TKMaxx. They often have Denby and Jamie Oliver at a fraction of the usual price.

Dancingtothemusicoftime · 20/04/2019 14:46

Second/third the Denby recommendations- great quality, tough and excellent sizing. We found the bowls from Ikea developed a crazed pattern on them once they had been in the dishwasher a couple of times.

I buy Denby at House of Fraser stores or Debenhams - the latter currently has some excellent deals on Denby chinaware.

Oblomov19 · 20/04/2019 14:56

Those wilko ones look fab. Watching with interest.

HundredMilesAnHour · 20/04/2019 15:01

I manage with 2. A deep bowl for cereal and soup and ice cream, and a shallow bowl for pasta.

This.

My 'favourite' deep bowls are Villeroy & Boch wave collection (my Dad is always amazed just how much ice cream he can fit in one of these!) but I also have some Missoni Bianconero deep bowls.

My shallow bowls/soup plates are all Missoni Bianconero. I love this range and am gutted that it's slowly disappearing from sale and now if/when I break things, they're becoming irreplaceable (sobs quietly).

I couldn't imagine only having one type of bowl. But I'm weird like that.Blush

ticketsonsalenow · 20/04/2019 15:02

Watching with interest. A lot of the cereal bowls don't stack anywhere as neatly as those Wilko ones. I've got a patterned dinner set from Woolworths I've had for getting on for 30 years. It has seen better days and I have been looking for ages for something that has proper cereal bowls and I just can't find anything anywhere.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 20/04/2019 15:12

I only have one style of bowl. I did have to see it before I bought it though as the previous time I bought a dinner service the bowls were too deep and were a pain to stack in the dishwasher. But equally I didn't want very shallow bowls as I quite like sitting in front of the tv with a bowl of soup on a cold night and shallow bowls tend to spill. I currently have some from Ikea. I'm pretty sure it's [https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/tableware/dinnerware/färgrik-18-piece-service-turquoise-art-90247709/ this]] one and there was also white dinnerware with a swirly design in the same turquoise so we have a mix of the two.

We have cereal bowls and pasta bowls, seconds from the Denby factory shop.

MummytoCSJH · 20/04/2019 18:47

I got some amazing ones from Dunelm, worth a look there, as they have lots of different styles and you can buy 1/2 or however many you need.
