How do you categorise clothes for washing?

Hey Ladies. I think I may be making more work for myself with my washing. I think I might be over cautious- and do so many separate washes! Usually, I do:
White wash
Reds/pinks wash
Dark wash
Light wash
Towels/underwear/ bedsheets for hot washes.
Is this necessary? How do you categorise washing? Do you ever have any colour run mishaps?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Anything that's dirty goes on together hahaha.

Unless it's something dark coloured and new.

Rarely have any colour spoils, I just don't have time or energy in to separate

Magmatic80 · 18/03/2019 12:23

Darks
Pales
Colours
Whites

All on 40 degrees, but whites on 60 if includes bed linen. Towels are in the darks so 40

InDubiousBattle · 18/03/2019 12:25

Lights, darks, bedding/towles/cleaning stuff. Lights and darks often get shoved in together though, unless there are new jeans or something likely to run in there.

elQuintoConyo · 18/03/2019 12:26

Dirty.
Clean.

I wash towels/bedding on their own as they're big and heavy and fill the drum.

I don't own anything white.

I would wash s new pair of blue/black jeans gif the first time with a bunch of other dark stuff, otherwise all clothes get washed together.

Thee are 3 of us in the house, washing is done 4x a week.

Oh, dog bedding and dog towels washed separately.

MirandaWest · 18/03/2019 12:26

I do lights (includes white), bright colours and dark colours. Don’t separate by type of clothing

Happilyacceptingcookies · 18/03/2019 12:26

Clean or dirty. If dirty, is the dirt obvious.

ALargeGinPlease · 18/03/2019 12:28

Me and the kids clothes, pretty much all in together at 40 degrees
My DH clothes, he gets filthy at work, 40 degrees but with a prewash.
Sheets/towels separately, sometimes 40 or 60 occasionally
Woolens/delicates
Jeans /dark colours if I'm worried it might run.
Never have a colour accident, if i have a posh white shirt, i might run it through a quick 30 degree wash.
Don't wash things after 1 wear/use.

TheBitterBoy · 18/03/2019 12:29

I do whites/pales together, or I'd rarely have a full load.
Darks is everything else
I'll do a separate wool wash every couple of weeks as required
Towels once a week.

Bedding gets done with the whites or darks depending on colour as required.

Nesssie · 18/03/2019 12:30

Darks (60)
Light (60)
Bedding and Towel (60)
Everything else/mixed colours etc (40)

Nesssie · 18/03/2019 12:30

Stick a colour catcher in if its being washed for the first time

Petalflowers · 18/03/2019 12:30

Coloureds, whites, bedding and towels.

I’ll also will separate ‘heavy’ such as jeans, trousers, etc and ‘lights’ such as shirts, tops, underwear etc, unless there’s not much, and then it gets all bunged intogether. Also, will add extra stuff to bedding wash if it doesn’t fill a drum.

I’ve concluded that i’ve seen so many adverts over the years purporting that the latest washing powder is far superior to previous versions, so they must be pretty good now.

teyem · 18/03/2019 12:31

Darks
Whites
Too filthy to be shared (dh's work clothes)

steppemum · 18/03/2019 12:32

depends how much washing. I never put in a half load.

so the basic sort is:

darks (black and navy) (colour wash powder)
whites (use bio white powder)
colours. (colour wash powder)

if there isn't much washing I might throw pales in with whites and darker colours in with blacks.

But when there is a lot, I will sort it according to colour and end up with a red/pink load, a blue load etc.

woolies obviously need a wool wash, and towels and sheets get a 60 rather than 40

I don't own delicates! (bras and knickers go in with whites

NickMarlow · 18/03/2019 12:32

Lights
Darks
Bedding/towels
Delicates (not often)
Anti stain (with monotonous regularity, dc1 is not reliably toilet trained yet, dc2 is at that stage of weaning where she still has poo explosion and also covers herself and everyone else in food)

thenightsky · 18/03/2019 12:32

Whites and pale blues
Yellow and beige
Reds, pinks and purples
Dark stuff - navy, black, dark grey etc
Medium stuff - turquoise etc
Boil wash whites - sheets and white towels.
Delicates/handwash option - single items only on a quick wash.

Blimey... seeing that written down makes me look a bit obsessional Blush

RoseMartha · 18/03/2019 12:33

Darks
Whites
Brights
Lights

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 18/03/2019 12:34

Whites
Darks
"Middles"
Delicates (mainly woolly jumpers and scarves)
There are 4 of us and I probably do 1 whites, 2 darks, 2 middles a week, 1 delicates every couple of weeks

dancemom · 18/03/2019 12:34

Darks
Lights
Whites
Gym clothes
Bedding / towels (however if its just the odd towel it can go in with the darks / lights)

sugarbum · 18/03/2019 12:35

Whites. 40 degrees
Not whites. 40 degrees. I use a colour catcher if I'm concerned about colour run.

I have to do at least one wash a day, and there are more not whites than whites.

Other stuff. Done when required. Other stuff consists of:

  • Special stuff. Generally mine. Things like frocks I want to wash gently and either cold or at 30 degrees. Doesn't happen that often
  • Swimming gear and sports gear - has to be washed as soon as it comes home.
When I do a bedlinen day (which is apparently less than I should according to MN :) ) then I have to do two sets of washes, and I do both at 60 degrees.
  • Towels. Mostly bunged in with 'non-whites' but sometimes there are so many of them I give them their own space :)
ElspethFlashman · 18/03/2019 12:35

My philosophy is "fuck everything in together"

Works OK, tbh.

We have a massive drum so it's wasted space and electricity to have half loads of this and that.

If there's anything new that's likely to run, I do a hand-wash with woolite the first time it gets dirty. That gets rid of the excess dye. Thereafter it goes in with everything else.

Fabellini · 18/03/2019 12:35

Darks
Lights/whites
Hand wash/delicates - no actual handwashing happens, it’s a separate programme on the machine
Towels - get washed separately mainly because I don’t put fabric softener in with towels because it makes them go all kind of slimy when you’re trying to dry yourself.
Bedding

Lauren83 · 18/03/2019 12:35

We do 3 types of washing

Bedding
DPs white work shirts
Everything else including towels and DSs clothes

Justanothernamechange2 · 18/03/2019 12:36

Whites...then everything else.

I was new jeans with navy towels for the first 2 washes n then bung them in the "everything else" pile

ijustdontunderstandher · 18/03/2019 12:37

Lights, Darks, Colours, Dirty goes in on it’s own, and then we do the big things such as bedding a towels, but if it’s one towel or a few small towels I will put them in with the darks

SneakyGremlins · 18/03/2019 12:37

I get undressed in front of the washer every night.

When it's full, it goes on a 60 wash.

Sorted! Grin
