How do you categorise clothes for washing?

Hey Ladies. I think I may be making more work for myself with my washing. I think I might be over cautious- and do so many separate washes! Usually, I do:
White wash
Reds/pinks wash
Dark wash
Light wash
Towels/underwear/ bedsheets for hot washes.
Is this necessary? How do you categorise washing? Do you ever have any colour run mishaps?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Right, I'm going to start flinging everything in together. I hate to think I've been making more work for myself.

notangelinajolie · 18/03/2019 14:51

Mixed or mixed Grin
Unless it's bedding and that goes in at 95 degrees.

LemonBreeland · 18/03/2019 14:52

Dark
Light/white
towels and bedding

I can't be bothered to break it down more than that

happyhillock · 18/03/2019 14:54

Towels and sheets go on 60
Light colours and dark colours 30, never mix light and dark

beenhereages1 · 18/03/2019 14:56

Whites - mainly just DS2's white polo shirts
Darks
Lights
Jeans
Towels
Bedding

SilentSister · 18/03/2019 14:58

Ohhhh, I do love a washing quizlet:

Whites & Lights go in together 40c
Darks and Coloured in together 40c
Linen and Towels in together 60c

I use same detergent for all.

I do however hand wash quite a lot of stuff.

All Bras
All jumpers
Some delicates.

And use Woolite for those.

BertieBotts · 18/03/2019 14:59

Dark, bright, white (and very pastel colours)

Only things that have run have been clothes we dyed ourselves at home, and a new towel in bright blue DH insisted on using (for weeks Envy) before letting me wash.

I do everything at 40. Occasionally if sheets/towels/tea towels seem extra bad I wil do a 60 wash.

BertieBotts · 18/03/2019 15:01

If everything is mixed, then whites go dull. That's the extent of colour mishaps.

mcjx · 18/03/2019 15:02

Literally just darks and then whites/lights.

I wash bedding separate and then sometimes towels if there are a lot of them in the basket, I do it on a 60 wash

There was a good thread about wash cycles. This might be of interest. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/AMA/3308661-I-developed-laundry-detergents-AMA?messages=100&pg=1

CharminglyGawky · 18/03/2019 15:28

Lights/whites as I don't have many whites so can't fill a wash on their own.
Darks
Brights
Towels
Bedding I do on a hot wash all on the same day so fills a wash on its own

Seniorschoolmum · 18/03/2019 15:31

Whites, darks, hand wash

chipsandpeas · 18/03/2019 15:34

everything gets put in together, unless theres something new thats dark and then i will do a darks wash on its own

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 18/03/2019 15:37

Lights and darks, or lights, darks, colours, depending on what stuff needs done. Towels are changed about weekly and go round as one wash. Beds are changed about fortnightly and each bed set is its own wash. Tea towels get chucked in with anything. Swimming kit, usually as soon as we get home, sometimes added to the towels if I time it right.

SleepyFlump · 18/03/2019 15:41

Darks 50c
Mediums 50c
Very lights/whites 50c
Bed linen 90c
Towels & tea towels - 90c, no softener

babydreamer1 · 18/03/2019 15:50

Darks (40)
Lights (40)
Whites (40) and whitener powder
Bedding and Towels (60)
Dogs stuff (60) and dettol
Wools and delicates
Hand wash expensive woolens

wonkylegs · 18/03/2019 15:54

Colourfast Lights & whites
Delicates/proper wool/hand wash
Everything else with a colour catcher sheet in it
Nothing goes grungy

burritofan · 18/03/2019 15:56
  1. Towels & bedding, 90 cotton wash
  2. Wools & delicates, 20 wool wash
  3. Everything else, 30 quick wash

No real schedule – towels & bedding every weekend; the rest just as and when, no separation of light, dark, colours, fabrics, whatever.

carbuncleonapigsposterior · 18/03/2019 15:59

Whites
Pale colours
Blacks and dark colours

I tend to wash most things at 40c, washing powder for whites and pales, but washing liquid for darks in case the powder should leave a residue. I don't use fabric conditioner in the washing machine, although I do put those papery type conditioner sheets in the tumble dryer if I use it, but prefer to use an airer if I can.

reetgood · 18/03/2019 16:01

Lights, Darks, hot wash (usually bedding and towels), delicates/ handwash

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 18/03/2019 16:02

Dirty / not dirty

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 18/03/2019 16:04

white wash at 40, once a week
coloured wash at 40, once a week
delicates wash (mainly my tops and DH's shirts plus woollens) at 30, once a week
Towels/tea towels/flannels/cloths at 60 (prob fortnightly or less)
bedding at 60 (once a month x 2, us and DC)
Prob a couple of other washes for stuff I've forgotten or needs doing in a hurry

bibbitybobbityyhat · 18/03/2019 16:07

Whites
Lights
Brights
Darks
Jeans and trousers
White bedding, towels and tea towels
Coloured bedding, towels and tea towels and cleaning cloths
Woolies
Silks and delicates (not many of these)
Bath mats

All clothes are washed on 40 except woolies and delicates
All towels and bed linen and bathmats on 60

33goingon64 · 18/03/2019 16:07

I'm a bit weird. I do: DC s' clothes (non bio liquid); my and DH's t shirts, socks, jeans etc (colour liquid); DH's work shirts (shirts setting); any delicates (handwash setting); my knickers and any sports wear (unperfumed liquid and no fabric conditioner); hot wash for bedding, towels, dishcloths, etc. So I don't separate whites from darks as I've never found it makes any difference.

Scoutsrus · 18/03/2019 16:08

White cottons and towels and my white sheets at 90

Darks cottons incl jeans at 40.

Mixed cottons 40.

Mixed synthetics 40.

Odd quick wash at 30.
