Spilt tea on new ones sofa bed and worried husband will go so angry at me

Husband bought a new Ikea sofa bed (Friheten) range in dark grey only just last week because we are redecorating and having a new living room. Everything all sorted and nice but we didn't have a side table for drinks/tea coffee yet. So we were all watching a film with kids and it was dark, I had a cup of tea in my hand and my daughter snatched a cushion from me ( she wasn't happy about something) and my tea went everywhere, I tried to hide it from my husband as he would really get angry at me so I got a towel discreetly and tried to soak up the tea. Then we all went to bed and the stain is there. I'm trying to hide with cushions too I find a way of getting it out but how? I've tried using a little bit of soap but it's not working. Please help I don't want to saturate it more. Will the tea have damaged the area underneath to and cause mould ?

Washing up liquid in a bowl of hot water. Use a micro fibre cloth in the bowl and scrub it fully then dry it with a hair dryer.

Notthecarwashagain · 26/01/2019 12:51

I wonder if steaming it might work?

Hope you get it sorted one way or another.

OhTheRoses · 26/01/2019 12:51

It's damp presumably.

Lillygolightly · 26/01/2019 12:57

You need x2 deep pile microfibre cloth/towels and some warm soapy water (a little bit of laundry detergent will do but a very small amount washing up liquid works too)

Take 1 cloth and wet (no need to saturate just blot) the stain and then agitate the stain by rubbing it so it soaps up. Then blot warm not soapy water and finally take you second dry cloth and using the plush pile side press in rub to absorb any remaining dampness and soak up the stain.

Part of my business is car valeting and this is how get rid of stains without completely wet vacuuming the whole car. I’ve seen this method get rid of years old well worn in stains, so this should easily work on your recent tea stain. We use a dedicated product but like I say a very small amount of detergent should work just as well.

Newsername · 26/01/2019 12:57

Could you hire a rug doctor when he’s out? They work quite well with mattresses and furniture too.

Also agree I feel sad that you’re afraid of your h’s reaction. That’s not normal, you poor thing :(

Fairylea · 26/01/2019 12:59

Your dh sounds awful. Keep the sofa and get rid of him...!

Lillygolightly · 26/01/2019 13:01

DO NOT dry with the hairdryer this can cause any edges of the stain that do not completely come out that might have otherwise faded to darken and become more obvious.

If you want it to dry quicker and have a suction attachment on you have a decent hoover you can suck up the very small amount if remaining dampness but this really isn’t necessary and won’t make much difference. Best thing to do it to lowave nice dry deep pile microfibre towel over the top with perhaps a book on top and leave to soak up.

MrMeSeeks · 26/01/2019 13:05

I use vanish carpet mousse on everything, but id get rid of the dh first, thats no wY to live.
Im extremely clumsy and mine gets fed up but im never scared of his reaction

itshappened · 26/01/2019 13:08

I would pay for a professional cleaner to come in and steam clean it. They will get the stain off.

stressingoversofa · 26/01/2019 13:27

Thanks everyone I might some other stain remover, but what I'm most worried about is would it have gone right through to the sponge and cushion under the cover, and what would happen to he underneath material over time after having liquid seep through?

Like other posters, I think the issue here is your fear of your husband's reaction. I dyed a load of washing pink recently (put my new burgundy top in without checking the washing instructions) and thought my fiancé might be pissed off (with some reason!) because his white work shirt came out splotchy pink and purple. But he wasn't, because it was an accident and these things happen.

Is your husband angry with you a lot?

EarthboundMisfit · 26/01/2019 13:31

OP this was an accident. You haven't ruined anything. You've had a completely normal accident and the fact you're so scared of your husband's reaction is a sign of real problems. His behaviour isn't normal and it isn't ok.

Tartanwallpaper · 26/01/2019 13:38

Spot on upholstery foam is really good and cheap, what do you do if your husband makes a mess OP? I hope you don't clean it up

Samanabanana · 26/01/2019 13:44

We have that sofa bed, and baby wipes have gotten all sorts of stains out of it.

But seriously, it's not normal to live in this much fear of a common household accident. You deserve better.

Sadiesnakes · 26/01/2019 13:50

Op, PLEASE stop ignoring what everyone is telling you here about your h. Why are you living like this? He is obviously abusing you and the sofa is the very least of your worries. Fair enough, try fix the sofa to buy you some time, but you really should be planning a separation here. Make a post in relationships and ask for advice to leave ASAP, this is no way to live. Thanks

O4FS · 26/01/2019 13:53

Contact Ikea and ask for a replacement cushion.

Pinkginxx · 26/01/2019 13:56

I've got that sofa. You buy it in 3 bits, you don't have to buy the whole lot. I did exactly the same thing and just bought that section again, about £120 x

OhTheRoses · 26/01/2019 14:02

The cushion underneath will just dry out. It won't cause a problem.

Where is your dh?

stressingoversofa · 26/01/2019 14:03

Thanks again everyone
I'm not ignoring all your comments about my DH
I know it's not normal and I know
His reactions to things are uncalled for but I just want to sort this sofa issue for me and the kids benefit as well because on my own I can't replace this

OP posts:
stressingoversofa · 26/01/2019 14:04

@Pinkginxx did you manage to get the stain out and what was the resin you bought a new section? Did it cause problems in the end? It's reassuring that I could just buy a new piece

OP posts:
stressingoversofa · 26/01/2019 14:05

@OhTheRoses my DH has gone to Ikea to buy my daughters a new bed. I hope it drys out and there is no lasting issues

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 26/01/2019 14:10

It doesn’t look too bad. If you have washed the whole thing that should balance ourt the stain. Why not ask him to get a nice throw to go over it (and put it on quickly)?

But no, getting pissed off is one thing by scaring someone with your anger is quite another.

squee123 · 26/01/2019 14:22

Please don't worry about mould or long term issues. It is not going to get mouldy from being damp for a day or two and the foam is robust enough to cope without getting damp no problems. I think you need to leave it alone until it is completely dry and then try a spot on upholstery cleaner over the whole of the seat cushion.

Also please call Women's Aid for a chat on 0808 2000 247 24. You and your children deserve better than this man. If you can't do it for yourself do it for your children before they are conditioned to think this is normal Flowers

BertrandRussell · 26/01/2019 14:25

The underneath will be fine-it’ll dry quickly if it’s in a warm room. Don’t worry about that.

Pinkginxx · 26/01/2019 15:22

By sand thing, I threw a glass of red wine on mine Blush
I didn't get it out but it was easy enough just to buy the section again x
