Do you use your washing machine?

Not sure Mad, doesn’t cork have antibacterial properties? Or have I made that up, entirely possible 😂.

We put it on the floor outside the shower, use it and then I stand it vertically in the shower to drain although no one else does and it is still fine.

ArabellaUmbrella · 26/01/2019 08:01

But surely everything that goes in the washing machine is dirty? I mean that's kind of the purpose of a washing machine, to get things clean...HmmConfused

itsboiledeggsagain · 26/01/2019 08:01

But isn't your washing machine designed to clean dirty things?

Passthecake30 · 26/01/2019 08:02

We have a bath mat that we put on the floor to step out of the bath/shower to catch the drips/wet foot patches. Never considered that they are dirty as people are generally showered before using them. However, I do wash the bath mat and the bathroom towel every single time I do a white wash (probably at least every 2-3 days) as they can get musty unless dried properly at every use.

My bath mat looks just like a thick towel.

MadauntofA · 26/01/2019 08:03

That's what the washing machine is for though? I use the dettol stuff and 60 degree temp for ours. I like your name nenuco - I used that for my dc when they were babies - loved the smell!

PeridotCricket · 26/01/2019 08:04

I asked something similar a while back...basically do people wash undies and dish cloths on the same wash. It came back with an overwhelming yes...basically washing machines are designed to wash dirty things....

Giraffeski · 26/01/2019 08:06

If you wash your socks in the washing machine then why wouldn't you wash the bath mat?

pinkhorse · 26/01/2019 08:11

Washing machines are for washing dirty things. Why wouldn't you wash dirty bath mats in there?

Nenuco · 26/01/2019 10:38

I guess I kind of see bath mats as things touching the floor so really really dirty compared to my clothes. But yes, maybe I am being silly about this.

Yes in the washing machine with the two kitchen mats. Unless of course, they get puked and diarrhoea’d upon (like yesterday, thanks ds!) then they go straight in the bin.

Passthecake30 · 26/01/2019 11:44

My clothes touch the floor floordrobe Blush
I think my bathmat is possibly cleaner than some other items in my house.::

MadauntofA · 26/01/2019 12:38

This thread encouraged me to wash my bath mat this morning and looked what happened Shock. There was a loose thread and the washing machine has gone crazy for it. I think it is beyond my sewing skills!

Knittink · 26/01/2019 12:43

Huh? Why on earth would you put things un the washing machine if they weren't dirty? Confused The point is that they get clean. If other things go in the washing machine dirty (e.g. clothes with mud or food stains on them) and come out clean, why would bath mats be any different? What harm do you think dirty mats could do in the washing machine?

Knittink · 26/01/2019 12:44

Also, with the touching the floor thing... if a t-shirt or towel had been lying on the floor, wouod you refuse to wash it in the machine?

justasking111 · 26/01/2019 12:47

We have a towelling bath mat in fact two which I rotate plus a bathroom rug, they all go in at a 60c wash and tumble.

Spudina · 26/01/2019 12:51

I use a hotter temperature for towels, bath mat and bedding (60 degrees). I occasionally do a washing machine cleanse sachet thing (Dr Beckmann??) to keep
the machine clean and try to remember to use calgon to keep the lime scale under control. That feels hygienic to me. But I don't routinely dettol my clothes as I worry that it will encourage resistant bacteria.

Nenuco · 26/01/2019 14:02

Also, with the touching the floor thing... if a t-shirt or towel had been lying on the floor, wouod you refuse to wash it in the machine?

But bath mats stay on the floor for several days, no? Unlike a towel or a t-shirt that's accidentally dropped.

OP posts:
Nenuco · 26/01/2019 14:04

In my mind, bath mats stay on the floor, sometimes wet for hours, then not washed for days...so the bacteria and other germs in bath mats >>>>> bacteria/germs in our clothes.

At least, this was my reasoning why I always go out to have the mats washed outside.

OP posts:
LadyandGent · 26/01/2019 14:07

Personally, I soak it in the sink, then scrub it for 10 minutes with my knuckles.

Of course I use the washing machine. What else were you thinking of?

I've never had a bathroom big enough to accomodate a rug though, so maybe you mean a bath mat?

LadyandGent · 26/01/2019 14:10

You think your shitty knickers don't carry germs? Unless y'all have athlete's foot, I put it in with the appropriate coloured wash!
I tend to have everything white, so that I can see when they're dirty. Mine get changed every 2 days more or less.
Is it the thing you stand out on after you get out of the shower?

TheFallenMadonna · 26/01/2019 14:11

Mine gets picked up after a bath/shower and hung up to dry. Basically I treat them as towels.

Nenuco · 26/01/2019 14:15

Ok, so we've established that bat mats/rugs can go on the washing machine.

How about rags? Like the ones you use to clean things/wipe the floor with/etc?

OP posts:
Tensixtysix · 26/01/2019 14:16

We use whatever towel that is the next to go in the wash. Put it on the floor. Rugs in bathrooms are horrible!
Especially ones near the toilet. WHY even put one there?

LoniceraJaponica · 26/01/2019 14:16

My bathroom floor is clean because I wash it regularly. The bath mat gets hung over the shower rail to dry after every use, then gets washed with the towels - approximately weekly.

You just need to apply a bit of common sense here.

justasking111 · 26/01/2019 14:19

We have a large bathroom area, all tiled. I bought a big rug because was worried about slipping on the floor it can be a bit dodgy. It also softens up the look. We bought a house with a brand new all singing dancing bathroom but imo. it is bleak.
