Best type of laundry detergent? Liquid, gel, powder etc?

What’s the best type? Always used liquid as I prefer it but am buying a new machine (my Beko has given up after 6 years so done okay I think). Want to know what’s the best type to use for my new and expensive machine?!

Biological powder for whites
Liquid for colours

Thank you. I can actually only use non bio I must add due to eczema!

Powder is better for your machine, and usually comes packaged in cardboard so better for the environment than plastic tubs and bottles.

INeedNewShoes · 31/12/2018 20:38

Plumbers say powder is better for the machine.

After a few years using liquid I've gone back to powder and much prefer it; it washes more effectively and is less likely to leave detergent residue than liquid.

userofthiswebsite · 31/12/2018 20:40

Powder detergents normally come out best in tests.

dementedpixie · 31/12/2018 20:41

I also use powder. I used to get marks on my washing with liquids but don't now

MsMamaNature · 31/12/2018 21:23

Powder - liquid and tabs can make the machine smell.

Acopyofacopy · 31/12/2018 21:25

Non-bio is a great big con! It doesn’t even exist in most European countries and people with eczema cope just fine.

I have eczema and use bio powder for whites, colour powder for mixed and liquid for black.

Disfordarkchocolate · 31/12/2018 21:27

Powder. Changed about six months ago and clothes are cleaner and the machine stays fresh instead of musty. We changed to reduce plastic so both of these were pleasant surprises. About to change to Splosh washing powder for even less waste.

FiveShelties · 01/01/2019 01:09

Powder - I use about a third of recommended amount and add a small amount of soda crystals. Machine is really clean. Year ago I used to use liquid but a plumber friend told me liquid is the plumber's best friend as it ruins machines.

CarrieBlu · 01/01/2019 01:13

I prefer to use powder, clothes smell so much fresher! However, I really want to find a measuring scoop, if anyone knows where I can get one!? You don’t get one with the Fairy powder.

Thishatisnotmine · 01/01/2019 01:19

I use powder for whites and towels on a hot wash, liquid for colours and delicates.

I think I use a measuring cap off a bottle odf gel or liquid to scoop.

MsMamaNature · 01/01/2019 02:10

@CarrieBlu The link gives you details on how to get a free powder scoop.

Liquid works out cheapest. I use liquid or powder, never tablets or gel things as they are so much less flexible. I tend to use half the recommended dose.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 01/01/2019 02:21

I thought powder was the cheapest. Just bulky storage wise.

Def what plumbers recommend for dishwashers too.

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2019 02:22

Powder.

EcoCleaner · 01/01/2019 12:09

Another vote for powder though I do also have a bottle of liquid in for pre-treating stains and hand washing. Persil & Ariel tend to be the best, especially Persil for a non-Bio if that’s what you want.

Branleuse · 01/01/2019 12:27

a good quality biological powder.

There was an AMA about it from a washing detergent developer that was really interesting

VanGoghsDog · 01/01/2019 13:04

On the Aldi website, but not other supermarkets, they show price per wash. For theirs, liquid is about the same as powder at just over 7p

I'm surprised powder is recommended, I tend to find it ends up clumping and sticking to stuff. But I'll buy powder next and try again as I'd also prefer a cardboard box (I'll decant to a tub after purchase anyway as under my sink is a bit damp and boxes crumble).

BendydickCuminsnatch · 01/01/2019 13:06

Powder but I’ve just switched to an eco egg and it does the job just as well!

NotCitrus · 01/01/2019 13:06

When I lived with a very ropey washing machine I used liquid as otherwise clumps of powder were left.
Since having adequate machines, I go for powder, usually Lidl.

JustKeepSwimmingJustKeepSwimmi · 01/01/2019 13:48

Liquid is more convenient but leaves a residue "slime" in the machine that affects it and it can smell!

We always used to use non-bio because of excema/babies and then read on here its a con. Weve changed to bio and its been fine! And cleaner clothes....

EcoCleaner · 01/01/2019 14:02

VanGoghsDog I stopped using Aldi’s Almat because it clumped up in the detergent drawer. Bought a box of Persil from home bargains and not had any problems
